Daniil Medvedev, who had a brief stay as the world No. 1 earlier in the season, has confirmed he will undergo surgery to correct a hernia and the Russian could be out of action for a couple of months. Such a scenario would see him miss the French Open which gets underway at Roland Garros in Paris on May 22.

Daniil Medvedev looks certain to miss the French Open and possibly Wimbledon after opting to undergo a hernia operation.
The Russian won his maiden Grand Slam title at last year’s US Open and started this season in fine form, losing an epic Australian Open final to Rafael Nadal.
However, he has suffered a couple of surprise defeats in recent weeks, and was forced to deny nerves got the better of him during his loss to Hubert Hurcacz in a quarter-final loss at the Miami Open.

I hope he recovers well. He's been the most consistent player on hardcourts outside Djokovic and Nadal. Timing is perfect, since he barely defends anything on clay and grass and should be fit for his most successful part of the season.

Good questionLower back?
As far as I know, they are either inguinal, or umbilical or hiatus hernias. Two male members of my family have had hernias. They get progressively worse and need surgery. It’s basically organs pushing through the muscle wall, so the muscle needs repairing.

Disc hernias too, in the discs between vertebrae of the back.

"organs"? That sounds scary.

If Novak manages to defend his clay points, he'll keep no1 position at least until the end of Wimbledon, maybe even until USO.

a herniated disc is nothing like a hernia though.

I have something similar going on. If I don't wear really good compression shorts, one of the boys will migrate upwards and stay there during a point.

might be linguistics... in my language it would translate to "disc hernia" more than "herniated disc"; so for me that's a hernia, even if a different kind.

Was it inguinal hernia? He should be fine just in time for the Grass season. He might be able to defend his Grass title at Mallorca and those crucial 250 points.
