Dark horses for the US Open (WTA)?

Here are my picks for dark horses in New York on the WTA side -

1. Shelby Rogers
2. Ajla Tomljanovic
3. Bianca Andreescu
4. Sloane Stephens
5. Anna Kalinskaya

Honestly, any name you put up there would feel like a Darkhorse.
The WTA is in a very long transitional phase where it's trying to figure out it's stars post-Serena. (Serena is not winning on a hardcourt - on grass maybe she gets to the QF)- If Coco Gauff won the US Open that would be my hope.

Exactly. I was going to write “everyone”

Exactly. After Wimbledon where Maria and Niemeir made the QF.....anything is possible.

If we are counting Dark Hose = Unseeded we can't list Rogers...she's seeded 31st.

I'd also say Muchova. She's struggled since coming back off and on, but shes also a former top 50 player whose had breaks before

I remember a time on the WTA where the individual tour events were paying extremely high appearance fees. Davenport for example in 2003 or 2005 was the first time I even heard events did that. She was paid a massive amount to just show up to Bali, I think.

Anyhow, I just don't see the tour spots doing that much anymore. Maybe for Iga and for Naomi.. maybe for Coco.

Caroline Garcia won Cincinnati. Is Linz or Vienna (The Austrian Indoor Event) really sending her a huge appearance fee? I just don't think so.

I remember the Louisville tournament sending Kuznetsova an appearance fee and then the whole event was scrapped. I bet she kept her fee. It's just not like that anymore on the WTA.
But I really do think it will be again. It's just a cycle. A lot of 1-slam wonders. We just want some consistency. Can you imagine any of the top 10 from the middle 2000s playing today? Jankovic would have two slams. Cibulkova, too. Maybe even Daniella. Provided they were the only ones to show up in the present day line up with the abilities they had back then.
The very best from those three is way good enough to take on the very best of everyone outside of Iga and Naomi.

I see that Sara Errani is still playing in US Open Qualifying. Talk about a player from a gone-by era.

Makes me miss early 2000s WTA.

Outside of the top 30,

1. Naomi Osaka (I don't think she'll get it together, but we know what her ceiling is)
2. Bianca Andreescu (more likely to get it together, but probably won't either)
3. Shelby Rogers (long shot American hope)
4. Clara Tauson
5. Qinwen Zheng

Now that the Draw is out
unseeded dark horses (leaving out Osaka and the Williams because I feel like everyone will say them)
1. Andreescu
2. Muchova/Tomljanovic (they play each other first round)
3. Bouzkova
4. Samsonova

Just some gut instinct...probably completely wrong on all counts

That is why it is fun.

L. Samsonova has a good draw and she's just won her 3rd career title in Cleveland (2nd of the year.) Maybe she will go deep.
