Ferrer recently spoke to reporters at the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation about Nadal’s fitness, “Nadal is training quite well with intensity.”
He continued, “We still don’t know if he will be in Monte Carlo but he will surely be in Barcelona and will arrive well for the tour on the clay. I have a lot of faith in him. That he physically has not had wear and tear is good.”

The last time Nadal played a first round in Monte Carlo was in 2006, right?

He will arrive well for the tour on clay” - Boy, does that have a familiar ring to it!
Because many times he gets injured at the AO and is coming back from injury around now.

Nadal will need to be physically in top shape for RG. He can't trade blows with an inspired Zverev, Tsitsipas or Djokovic if he's lacking in match play and in physical fitness. The courts are so slow that he'll need to fight in every point. And a lot of players will go in with the belief that Nadal is ready to be taken due to his recent history of injuries with the rib, foot and hip and with his advancing age.

Barcelona makes more sense as he likely can get more matches played without facing an immediate exit as Djokovic did last year when he returned from a hiatus. He should start at a 250/500 level tournament before he attempts to play a M1000. The windy conditions of MC is not the ideal place to start when you have some of the injuries he had.

If Nadal is fully healthy by MC (which I don’t think he will be, but anyway) and plans to enter all 4 big pre RG tournaments like an overplaying idiot, he needs to aim to deliberately lose in at least 2 of them before the late rounds, or he is not winning RG

Save that talk for the plebs. The King plays whenever he deems to.

Nadal really has no obligation to play MC, especially considering his age and his last months, playing Barcelona, Madrid or Rome or maybe both is more than enough before the FO.
The guy's aura on the Philippe Chartier is so overwhelming he could not play any warmup tournaments and he'd still be the number one favorite for the FO.

Nadal has pulled out....I thought he was ready. I wonder if it is to avoid an early encounter with Alcaraz and Djokovic, and possibly other contenders like Tsitsipas and Zverev, to not allow them to build confidence and momentum. I mean, if he is ready to play Barcelona a week later, he is ready now. Looks strategic to me.

Why is Rafa even playing Barcelona at this stage of his career!?
The Barcelona tournament is important to Rafa because his club hosts it. He calls it his 'home tournament'. He has been a member of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona (hosting the tournament) since he was 11 years old.

As for playing ATP 500 tournaments, players who ended the previous season in the Top 30, have to play 4 ATP 500 level events during the season, one of which is held after the US Open.

Yeah I think he wants to build his confidence first. Doesn’t want to face the big guns just yet. I can see the logic to be fair.

It's just amazing that he has more trophies than Djokovic at a HC slam. Every time I read that factoid, I smile.
Pathetic! Fact IS, Novak has many more weeks at @1, more YE at #1 and has more BIG Tournaments Won. At this point, ONE more USO, means nothing in comparison to Djokovic.

Surprised to see him pull out - especially if he ends up playing next week. Maybe it is strategic, as hinted above. He feels ready, but not completely ready?

It will be the 70th anniversary of Barcelona open this year. If Nadal is not 100%, I hope he doesn't feel any pressure to play there just for the occasion.

Yeah I agree. It will always be a big thing that Nadal has over Djokovic and Nadal fans can use it. I admit it’s an incredible achievement and Rafa was incredible in those finals and deserves to have more us opens than Novak. Fair play to him on that considering he missed quite a few with injury too.
I would say Novak underachieved in UsOpen. And Nadal underachieved at Wimbledon.
Both are better players than their titles at these 2 slams suggest.
