He's the 3rd best player in the world according to the rankings. Rankings surely don't lie! :???:
No. He's benefiting from Nadal's hiatus and Fed's slump. Otherwise, he would not be anywhere near the top 3.
He's the third "ranked" player in the world, not necessarily the third "best". There's a lot of correlation between ranking and how good a player is, but it's not completely parallel. Ranking is simply a completely objective adding up of points, not a judgment on how good someone is. Again, there's heavy correlation between the two, and very often the No. 1 ranked player indeed is the "best" and the No. 2 is indeed the second best, etc. But, the two concepts diverge from time to time.
Think of Serena when she had all her absences and would drop in the rankings and come back and win, or go deep in, Slams. She may have been ranked 10th, for example, but she was certainly better than the 10th best player in the world. Or, think of Wozniacki and Safina as No. 1s. Of course, they were incredibly good, even great players, but many would argue that they were not the "best."
He has consistency for him + he plays a lot of minor league events. In slams, he has the most points after Djoko and Murray (that's because he's had no early exit). He didn't get many points in masters but he also has the most points in 250 and 500 after Nadal.
He's consistent but dude, he ain't better than Fedal.
The guy ain't even a grand slam for pete's sake.
Ferrer just might be better than Federer right now. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he finally gets his first win over Federer sometime this year. The big knock on Ferrer is how bad he is against the top 4, but Fed has also gotten kicked around pretty good by those guys for the last year. Federer's talent and potential on any given day is much higher, and overall career obviously in a different stratosphere, but if you compare their average level on any given day and their results in 2013, the edge may go to Ferrer.
His h2h vs the Fedal would indicate otherwise.
Ferrer has had better overall results than Nadal and Federer over the last 52 weeks, That is why he is ranked above them.
Ferrer is definitely greater than old man Federer. Better than Nadal outside of clay as well.
He isn't better than Rafa or Federer ( not saying he isnt ) he just is higher 'ranked' than them.
He isn't better, he's just earned more ranking points.
Rankings surely don't lie. It says how many points each player collects. It never says that it can justify who really is better than who. It's those who try to extend its meaning that are inaccurate.
He IS better than RFederer at the moment. The guys who are saying "RFederer is better" are obviously comparing DFerrer to a 2004-2007 RFederer.
But I don't think he is better than RNadal. The only reason he is behind him is because RNadal missed 7 months of professional tennis and It's NOT DFerrer's fault and hence he deserve whatever advantage he is getting by remaining in the top 4.
Tell me when Ferrer beats Fedal again.
I think Ferrer is going to win a grand slam, he's just got to get over the hump he's too talented not to. Nice to see David reach his first grand slam final this year he didn't play well in the final, but I think he's going to win a slam one day. He deserves the number three ranking he's a lot more consistent than Federer.
He is better than Federer at the moment, yeah, but not better than Nadal, no way.
This is a good example of H2H being irrelevant. Ferrer is better than Federer at the moment, but Ferrer can't beat Federer. Still, Ferrer has proven through the last 52 weeks of hard work he is better.
As for Nadal, well, he has four months to make it deep into tournaments without defending anything, so that is more of an anomaly for him to be below Ferrer.
Right, if Rafa plays every event this year, it's more than likely he will pass Ferrer.
Ferrer > Murray..on these slow courts he could have won against murray at wimb
Ranking is about performance vs the field and not H2H. So in that sense RIGHT NOW Ferrer is better than Nadal or Fed. Or a better way to put it is that over the last 12 months, Ferrer was better than Nadal and Fed.
Only on clay that Ferrer can beat Murray.
how come can you say that ? do you know Nadal has not played any match from july 2012 to february 2013 ?
Do you know what it means in terms of ranking ?
But Ferrer > Federer, yeah no doubt
By the way, Race to London:
As you can see, Nadal is way better than Ferrer and Federer.
And Ferrer is better than Federer (who is declining big time)
3 words: h2h 17-0
Correction: It's 15-0, not 17-0.
When these two meets, RFederer will be the winner because of the match-up, but currently DFerrer is the better player (as his results have been much better than RFederer). It's the same thing as RFederer-RNadal - RNadal becomes the better player when they meets, but RFederer IS the better player overall.
So yeah Ferrer is currently better than Fed (but not better than Nadal)
amazing to see Nadal number 1 as he didn't play AO and lost Wimbledon in first round
Don't worry. NDjokovic will still finish ahead of him
Not really considering he played 2 more tournaments than andy and novak and he has completed his strongest by far part of year where as the other 2 should amass more the rest of the year
Fed was 6-6 as far as I recall in 2012. This year he's what - 0-3? They haven't met that much.
I assume the OP is kidding
Nadal > Ferrer > Federer at the moment.
Hopefully we'll get a Ferrer - Federer match this year, might be interesting for the first time.
fixed it for you.
Nadal Federer 9/8 outside clay  http://www.tennisexplorer.com/mutual/federer/nadal/ (and didn"t count the ridiculous idea "battle of the surfaces" lol)
NO, GOAT-Nadal 8-7 outside clay, only official matches count.
No.. according to Rafa fans, Fed is still in his prime and it is just that the field (i.e. Ferrer got better).
Would anyone wager even 5 of their hard earned dollars on Ferrer on any surface, anywhere if he played against Federer and you were getting 1-1 odds?
Yeah.. rankings tell you something, but definitely are just a piece of the puzzle.
I would on clay. Especially Monte-Carlo that Fed fears to play nowadays.
well enjoy lighting your $5 on fire
I would not bet on Ferrer in that match, but how is that relevant? The matchup is simply a terrible one for Ferrer, but head to head is not the only thing that matters.
I'm as big a Federer fan as you will ever find, but I can admit that Ferrer is a better player right now and has played better for the past year.
How many h/c slams has Ferrer won?
Never thought I'd ever hear the words that Ferrer is better than Federer.
Kudos to Ferrer for being consistent when Nadal/Fed haven't, but damn, he is screwing up the seedings for all the slams. USO will be interesting.. Nadal/Djoko quarter? Nadal/Fed quarter?
Ferrer has better results right now, but no one is mistaking him for a better player
what are you talking about ?
Nadal is not number 5, he is number 4, a Nadal/Djoko in quarter is impossible.
Actually, Ferrer is without a doubt the better player right now.
Career-wise, peak for peak (at their best), Ferrer is not on the same planet of course but that's a different topic.
He has better results because he is playing better right now. I think Federer would still beat him head to head, but I think he is more likely to beat Tsonga, Del Potro, or Berdych than Federer, and neither are likely to beat Djokovic, Murray, or Nadal.
Agreed, this guy is stuck living in the past.
Separate names with a comma.
