David Ferrer revealed that he has split from his long-time coach Javier Piles after reaching a career high ranking of World No. 3 in 2013.
Ferrer, 31, has worked with Piles for almost 15 years but made the announcement while he prepares to start his season at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship invitational event in Abu Dhabi.
The Spaniard revealed the split in a conference call, saying:
“I finished my relation with my coach Javier Piles three or four days ago. I am sad because it was a very familial relationship and next year I will begin with Jose Altur along with my same team. I broke my relation with Javier, it was okay, we didn’t have any personal problems. We worked together for many years and we decided to end the coaching relationship.”
Piles was at Ferrer’s side as he played in his career best year, reaching his first Grand Slam final, where he lost to Rafael Nadal at the French Open, and had coached him since he was a teenager.
The coach revealed that he used to lock the wayward youngster in a closet when he was reluctant to put in the hours on the court – it obviously worked as Ferrer has a fearsome reputation as one of the hardest working professionals, and is one of the most dogged opponents out on a court.
Ferrer will open proceedings in Abu Dhabi when he takes on Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in the opening match. The pair last faced each other at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
The Mubadala World Tennis Championship takes place between 26 and 28 December 2013.
