David Ferrer to retire next year?

His current ranking of 29 is somewhat flattering, largely as a result of a semi final run in Cincinatti and a 250 title against inept opposition.

His win loss ratio declined last year and has declined further this year, aged 35 he's on the slippery slope to the end. Take away his 250 title and he lost more on clay than he won this season, with defeats against Anderson, Carreno Busta and Lopez being lowlights. He still has his never say die attitude as he showed in beating Donald Young over five sets in the first round of the French. But his game is only going to get worse, it's barely enough to beat journeyman like Young on clay anymore.

He has already said he will take a decision about his career at the end of the year. He does have enough ranking points to enter all the big tournaments next season. I predict he will have another year on tour then walk away.

I will miss his never say die attitude.

I think he should reitre. He can't go deep in tournaments anymore and is susceptible to losing to anyone. What's the point in continuing if you are no longer a factor?

Money, enjoyment, lack of alternatives. Most of us are much worse at our job than ferrer is at his, even now, but we retire only if we can afford to do so. At 35, even Ferrer's wealth might not last if he is used to a particular lifestyle.

Unless he's stupid enough to squander his money on multiple luxury cars it's very difficult to have an expensive lifestyle as a professional tennis player. The demands of training and playing for the most part preclude excess.

He should be fine unless he's got Boris Beckers financial nous. He's a smarter guy than Becker so i think he'll be alright.

So he should retire just because he isn't at the very top anymore?

I disagree. If David feels he can eek an extra year or two out of his career I say go for it. He is still ranked well within the top 50, most guys would do just about anything to be ranked where he is currently.

And I believe he can still stay within the top 100 for a year afterwards, save injuries.

So, when's this guy gonna retire? He's been stinking up the joint for a good while now.

After the USO I suspect....unless he has a good result there or at a Masters lead up. He's no longer direct entry to Masters tournaments based on current ranking, so there's little incentive to continue.

One factor that is that he became a parent just a few months ago. This may affect his decision. I am a fan and don't enjoy seeing him struggle for wins. If he retires, I will miss him.

He wants to troll the tennis world once more for old times sake...he will beat everyone that has a chance to upset a high seed and then roll over immediately for his top ranked masters. The ultimate lapdog gatekeeper.

I can't believe Federer never had the misfortune of meeting him in a slam.
Even Nadal got to play him in a slam final.

He will probably retire after the Davis Cup final this year as he was an important actor of the quarters (5 sets against Kohlschreiber in his city, Valencia)

To be fair, everyone including Ferrer himself knew that the Nadal-Djokovic Semifinals match was the "real" finals. Same with their Wimby match a couple weeks ago

Not just cars: houses, drugs, jewelry. There are any number of things people can spend their money on that don't take up that much time. And, of course, tennis players have to spend a lot of money on travel (airfares and hotels) as well as on coaching staff.
