Didn't see this match but is the OP right? Was Djoko just deliberately fooling around?

If so, then I think he's got a point. Sure, The Boodles is only an exhibition event but, for that very reason, spectators pay to see the players exhibit their tennis skills even if they don't necessarily expect them to play their best tennis otherwise what's the point other than maybe just to see them standing on a tennis court in their working gear and holding a racquet?

Sounds a bit like Novak was just there to amuse the audience and play it all for laughs as if its all about him and who cares about this stupid match with this stupid opponent anyway which can certainly come across as cocky and disrespectful! It's as if he's asking to be taken down a peg or two and there might just be somebody out there in the mood to do it. Who knows, maybe the Djoke will be on The Djoker?

The proof is in the pudding. If he wins Wimbledon this doesn't matter. But if he gets to Wimbledon and is not properly prepared, losing, maybe you can resurrect this thread. ;)

Personally I would take your comments a bit more seriously because you heard them in your own language and might better judge how he seemed, in context...

What he said in an interview was quite arrogant and i never have seen Novak in that kind of mood. Even though i wanted him to be a bit more cocky in hes goals statements. One guy corrected me here, saying that he gave that interview before the match not after. But that television said that interview was after he lost to Goffin. To be honest i don't know what is true and i maybe made a mistake with posting this thread way to fast without checking the facts.

I am diehard Novak fan. But i am realistic one also. Always full on critics and praise both for him and hes opponents.

Novak was playing with like 50-60% of hes level till 5-3 40:0 on hes serve in 1st set. From that moment i would give a better resistance to Goffin trust me. Never the less, he lost in manner of fooling around and that is not bothering me that much at all, what does is that interview which i still cant confirm 100% was it given after or before the match.

If it was given before the match this thread wouldn't exist, but most popular television in Serbia showed an interview and said that it was after the match. If it was after the match, saying that he can get CYGS this year with such arrogance in hes voice, after that fooling around is just disrespectful towards entire ATP tour. Simple as that.

Zverev in 2015 and now Goffin in 2016 pre Wimbledon exibition. Both have won against Novak.

You can watch entire match on Youtube. Now this comes from Novak fan and countryman. Watching first set Novak 5-3 and 3 set points he starts mocking around and plays a shameful tennis. He is number one in the world and this intentional loss was disrespectful for any tennis fan. I can't imagine Nadal or Federer would drop a match like this just because is not an ATP tournament. After the match interview with Goffin when asked how he felt that he won against No1 of the world he just bitter smiles and walks away. Moment after Novak gives a press interview for most famous Serbian television and i will quote/translate it on English.

When asked: "Can you win a GYGS this year?"

"Ne želim da zvučim arogantno, ali zaista mislim da je u životu sve dostižno. Bez obzira da li ću ostvarili kalendarski Slem ili ne, uvek postoji mogućnost"

"I don't want to sound arrogant, but i really think that you can achieve anything in life. Will i manage to achieve calendar GS or not, there is always possibility"

Well he doesn't want to sound but 1 hour before an interview he proves that he was arrogant. It's hard to understand our mentality but he wanted to play low mind game with the rest of the tour to show that he is actually "beatable" for upcoming Wimbledon and there he will be unstoppable...

If i was David Goffin today. Once the match was over and we where out of the field, i would have spit in hes face.

Nothing he ever did can't compare with what he have done today. Disgrace...
It is an exhibition. Novak probably used it to warm up for his Wimbledon defense. Does this tournament mean anything? Not really. It is just practice.

Even if Novak lost the Boodles, he is very likely to make a three-peat. Even as a Nole fan, he is no stranger to controversy (I have my eyes on Federer and Nadal, Murray especially). Would either Nadal or Federer drop an exhibition? Probably not because they are usually the ones hosting it via their organizations. But they know that it's usually to raise money for charities or whatever.

Did Novak lose the match on purpose? Maybe. He is using it to gain some momentum

Guys, guys, guys... I am not ******** for the love of god. Yes, i know it was EXO...

Can you read between lines? He lost exo match? I don't care! The way he lost it and what he said after is way to irritating and humiliating for such a person as he is.
He used Boodles to adjust to grass and he has accomplished just that. You are right; sometimes he acts like a jerk and it's really unnecessary. Ask Murray, Nadal, and Federer. They''ve done the same thing before.

The only difference is that Nole does this in tournaments he's comfortable with. The other do it in tournaments that mean a lot to them.

I understand your frustration. It's sad to see Djokovic act like that. He probably has a lot on his mind. He is on the cusp of greatness and the verge of glory. He will need all the preparation he can get! :)

Check the time of the article about him saying that and the article about his loss to Goffin. I am referring to B92.

Anyway, there is nothing arrogant about saying that he can win a CYGS. If he said he will win it, that would be another story...

Exactly, in first week of Wimbledon when the grass is not damaged yet and he is facing a lot of hungry and good serving fellas he will need a good preparation. I thought that he will use this exho to adjust and to shape up hes return/movement rather then fooling around.

OP, you cannot be serious. So what if he didn't play all out? He uses this exhibition to get the feel of the grass and nothing more really. Also, if Novak said that after the match, then how do you equate disrespect from that? However, he didn't and said it in his interview after the RG final.

Yeah I agree it was a lousy match. Djokovic looks uncomfortable on grass but he always does and still wins every time. What I don't like about the performance is not so much the level of play, but it's that he really didn't look like he wanted to be there. Look, if you're number #1 in the world you have to act like a role model a bit. You have to entertain the crowd, be friendly to the kids, especially at exos. But this looked like a case of "Let me just show my face and get the hell out of there as soon as possible". I understand it I guess.. but you can't be like that when you're in that position.

The OP has lost credibility here.
So I used Google Translate,
"I do not want to sound arrogant , but I really think that in the life of all achievable. Whether I made a calendar Slam or not , there is always a possibility."
How the F is this arrogant? Are people allowed to be confident and aspiring anymore?
Goffin is a guy who looks like he can start crying any minute, all the time. I felt sorry for the audience and Novak for being in an exhibition match like this. Lighten up already.

I could never imagine Federer on Nadal would do/play/act in exho match as he did. On the other hand i understand that he needs to relax a bit and everything, but after FO and dodging Queens and Halle i expected him to at least look at this exho as a place to shape up and get used on grass. This kind of behavior was just childish, i can't find a better word.

As i have said it before, this thread would not exist if there wasn't "timing" mistake in hes interview about winning CYGS this year, but your point and thoughts is 100% same as mine.

Post match on court interview with Novak.
Q: When you do get your money from the cash machine, do you check your balance?
Novak: Haha.
Q: Do the numbers fit on the screen?
Novak: Well, Roland Garros payment still hasn't arrived. So I'm still waiting ...
Q: We'll have a word. ... Are you thinking about it (the calendar year GS)?
Novak: Of course I am.
Q: Are you going to do it?
Novak: Of course I am (laughing).
Q: What about the golden slam?
Novak: No, I don't think it would be fair to all the other players if I say that I'll do it. David is here on the court with us. And many others are fighting for the trophies. We all start from scratch. Let's see where it goes. First things first.

It was an absolute joke. In the 2nd Djoko nearly went up two breaks and 5-1. The fix was in at that point is neither player wanted to play a third set. The drop shot attempt by Djoko to give Goffin match point was ridiculous. It was hardly worth watching when one of the players clearly does not want to play a third set. The OP is 100% right.

If the Jack Kramer pro tour was like this exho match it would have gone under after a few maches. LOL Goffin having to answer questions about this farce. Both players laughing together after they walk off court. The joking around is expected at these events and I sincerly hope the tickets were quite cheap. Djokovic was entertaining in his banter and that was nice to see, its just a shame that the 2nd set was almost scripted like pro wrestling. I agree with the OP's sentiments.

Not sure that before or after really matters, but I'd guess it was after as the on court interviewer brought up the subject in English. Djokovic was not arrogant in English, but clearly he thinks he can do it as he did back track and state it was disrespectful to Goffin who would give him competition at the events, plus others. In English it did not come off as arrogant and why should he not have this goal in mind?

Kygrios and Djokovic will be trying to out tank each other tomorrow with antics galore. Should be entertaining if totally seperate from reality.

The people there were also fooling around. Near the end of the match some guy shouted "come on Andy" when Djokovic was down a MP. It was only entertainment, and Djokovic wasn't willing to exert himself too much considering it was an exo + his first match on grass. Goffin on the other hand took it very seriously and came away with the result.

Djokovic always fools around at Boodles really. Dancing with his shirt off, joking with the crowd, entertaining requests from the women in the crowd :p

Usually his opponents at Boodles also join in the fun (like Gasquet and Dimitrov did), but Goffin doesn't look the type. He was barely even cracking a smile and was hitting return winners for fun haha.

And no, the spectators pay for the entertainment. If they wanted tennis skills, they'd have gone to a 250/500/Wimbledon. And entertain them, he did.

You should have seen Novak's reaction to the "come on Andy". Sarcastic smile, followed by a really stern look, followed by a laugh haha...

I think Goffin just takes things very seriously. He takes nothing for granted I feel... even last year when he was very high up in the rankings he seemed to play challengers every time he was free it seems. Just wants to be the best Goffin he can be...

And no Novak wasn't deliberately tanking the match, but he wasn't nearly putting in as much effort as I've seen him put in other exhibition matches against the Big 4 (who he cannot bring himself to lose to even in exhibitions).

Plus he's playing another match today against Kyrgios...

Might be more interesting given this is their first meeting. Trouble is, Kyrgios sometimes finds it hard to take Slam matches seriously, let alone exhos. But let's hope that isn't too obviously the case.

Well, no I did not. I thought it was classless and out of order for Murray to say that to Rosol during a match when everyone could hear him no matter what the provocation and I said so at the time. He knew that himself because he went to see him later in the locker-room to apologise and clear the air.

Not really. He usually gets up for the big-4 even in exhibitions, would you say he is disrespecting the other guys by playing an inferior level of tennis against them even outside of exhibitions? By telling that even his C level is good enough to beat them so he won't try any better, he is disrespecting them, isn't he?

Novak's priorities were very different here. No injury + fitness is the main priority... trying to play at his best level just after 2 weeks of rest on a new surface in a match of no consequence is not conducive to it.

Goffin's already played other grass tournaments so he's more attuned to the surface as well.

And we probably disagree on this, but exhibitions aren't meant to be played on the same level as a tour match. They have a different purpose... sometimes it is to bring tennis to a place it is not often seen in, other times it is to gain fitness and tweak your game. I don't remember the last time I saw any top pro take Boodles seriously... it is really just a way to pander to fans n a way you wouldn't really do in a competitive match.

Not if he can beat them with his C level. But yes, if he is clearly capable of winning the match but deliberately doesn't bother to do so.
