Why is Robredo a sub behind Verdsco and Lopez? He was in better form on clay this year, he won 2 titles in South America, didn't he?

Not a fan of Spanish tennis for very obvious reasons,so why isnt Verdasco playing? The Spanish tennis-federation had enough of his choking? The indoor-setting looks awesome though, i think the atmosphere is gonna be very good.
Spain will win 4-1.

I don't think Lopez is slated for singles play, actually.

I think right now it's Nadal and Ferrer for the singles and Verdasco/Lopez in doubles.

Ferrero is more likely to come in as an alternate than is Robredo because Juan Carlos was on the practice courts for the last 2 days whereas Robredo hasn't been, as far as I know.

I'm not 100% on the details of the line-up, though, and neither is Albert Costa, I think.

I'll update when I get some more details on the lineups and what the alternates for the Czech team might be, if there are any.

Is Ferrer ok then?I had read that he had problems with his knee for some months now..? And he's far from the best clay courter in comparison with the other spaniards  Robredo,Ferrero are much better on clay imo.

I have no clue on Ferrer's condition, but I think that Costa (Spanish Davis Cup coach now) is trying out everyone right now as he's put Ferrero on the court with Rafa today and Verdasco is hitting, also.

I think Costa's main concern is seeing who is the fittest and would be the best for his singles and doubles lineups.

Having Ferrero and Robredo as alternates is fantastic, though, IMO. I'd ditch Ferrer if he looks to be struggling at all.

That was a hilarious exchange. Good stuff, you two.

Magician of PRecision....why is it for obvious reasons that you're not a fan of the Spanish team? You just dislike Spain? Or Nadal? I guess you're a big Soderling and Roger fan, is that it?

Well, may the best team win. I'm hoping to catch some of the telecasts. Love Davis Cup!

Which brings me to this: I emailed Davis Cup folks to find out about live streaming and they said the USA doesn't allow their streams in (Obama's clearly not focusing here)...

I don't get the darned tennis channel, so any other live streaming possibilities you know of for Davis Cup? God, I've love to watch it.

Don't worry my dear europe and the betting sites will come to the rescue. We will find you streams I promise.;)
In case I'm not here in the weekend and noone has posted any, search in atdhe,in fromsports and in usstream.

Australia played Spain in a DC match in that crummy country and we got all sorts of abuse from the home crowd. It went beyond what you'd normally expect from home town fans to border on anti social if not psychpathic. To top it off when they came here in a re match they whinged and worried about how we'd treat them in return. Trying to dodge the comeuppenance they deserved. Cowards.

They've earned my undying contempt ever since.

So I put my hand to my forehead and like Hewitt shout" C'MON the Czechs.

You just described 2/3 of all DC crowds,it's an important part of this competition. Trust me,spain didn't have it easy in argentina last year as well. And don't even get me started on what my own country's team(Romania) had to go through in the tie with Ecuador a few years ago,I remember our players saying they felt like they played in the toughest atmosphere ever, with the home crowd chanting all the time, trying to disrupt their serve, basically they had everything against them and they still won 3-2.

While it sucks from a tennis lover's point of view,it's what makes DC ties special. And I don't think you can classify the spaniards as "cowards" because the players actually know how tough it is for their opponents to play "away" and like I said DC crowds aren't your typical crowds,ESPECIALLY in Latin countries. When you have important players playing at home, crowds WILL get pumped up in most countries, even to the point of disrespecting some of the gentleman rules of tennis. Need I remind you that the wimbledon crowds(generally thought of as the most knowledgeable) were cheering at wawrinka's UE's when one of their own(murray) was involved?

I was reading your post and guessing you'd get to the point I've highlighted. I agree entirely that the worst behaviour seems to come from latin countries. Don't know why. Australia had a similar experience in soccer with Uruguay. Players were spat on as they arrived. And that was abt as nice as they got!

I take your point abt DC crowds and I love their parochialism. Wouldn't have it any other way. But Australia has played away many times and got rough treatment from the host country's crowd. No complaints with that at all. But what the Spaniards did that tie was disgraceful. Just low. Then to turn around and try and dodge their comeuppance here showed me they can dish but can't take. In any case we showed them the sportsmanship they never did. Hopefully it'll give them pause to reflect on the contrast.

DC crowds are, for the most part, obnoxious. I wouldn't object if all they did was cheer like mad for their guy after he wins a great point, or if they tried to pump him up with chants during the changeovers, or even in between important points. But trying to interfere in the game by distracting the opponent is a disgraceful insult to tennis.

However, they deliver also good moments. For instance, it was fun when Roddick managed to get Madrid's crowd to cheer for him for a moment in the bullfight ring, although the fact that Nadal was handing him a sizable can of whoopass at that moment probably made it a tad easier to happen.

If the Czechs manage to pull it off it will be really epic. Thanks to Nadal's and Verdasco's dubious forms they are not the overwhelming underdogs they would be otherwise, but beating all those countries they did plus Spain at their turf with just two top 20 players would be quite the achievement. Tally ho! Err... To Doho! Do toho!

Here's to a close fight and quality tennis.

Any updates on this?

Actually, I got it from the website:

R1 - R.NADAL (ESP) v. T.BERDYCH (CZE)
R2 - D.FERRER (ESP) v. R.STEPANEK (CZE)
R3 - F.LOPEZ / F.VERDASCO (ESP) v. L.DLOUHY / J.HAJEK (CZE)
R4 - R.NADAL (ESP) v. R.STEPANEK (CZE)
R5 - D.FERRER (ESP) v. T.BERDYCH (CZE)

Playing Ferrer over Verdasco in singles is a mistake. Berdych and Stepanek will like their chances vs Ferrer more than Verdasco.

Hmm, that's arguable. A fresh Feli/Fer doubles team has very good chances against a tired Step/Berd. Ferrer is almost as good as Verdasco on clay and he is not tired/injured from the WTF. Nando can always play the fifth point if it is necessary. I think it is overall a very sound strategy.

Ferrer in doubles? No way. Nadal all the way.

Fer-nando Verdasco. You can refer to Verdasco as Fernando, Fer, Nando, Dasco... Ferrer is Ferrer or Ferru. I don't think Nadal is at this moment ready to engage in three consecutive 5-set matches, even if it is on clay.

Costa's plan is to spare Verdasco for the doubles, where he plays regularly with Feli (or played, I think this year he has focused more on his singles career,) so Spain has a better shot at the doubles point. A fresh Ferrer on clay is as good on singles as a burnt out Verdasco.

Perks of having a deep bench. It gives you the chance to speculate with player's form and freshness.

Lendl says that Spain's depth is consequence of Spanish Federation's programs to develop new talent. I think it is most likely sheer luck, since I don't hear of any new Spanish youngling tearing through the junior draws, so they'd better milk it for what it is worth while it lasts.
