Davis Cup Dilemma: Will Djokovic come to India?

FreeBird

Legend
Serbia has drawn India for the Davis Cup World Group Playoff and venue is India.
Currently, Somdev is ranked in the 88th. Yuki is rising too and I expect him to be in Top 100 by September barring injuries. Tipsarevic, Bojoljac and Lajovic are pretty much beatable in singles. In doubles,They have Zimonjic but India have Bopanna. Almost toe to toe. A possibility that Serbia could be eliminated from World group in absence of Djokovic.

So, would Djokovic come to India considering that it is scheduled just after USO? They have a time zone difference of 10.5 hours.

Personally, I want him to come to India. He has not paid a single visit to India which is kind of a blunder by his PR since India has the most social media tennis fans.

Your take?

I don't think he would. It's a first round match and top dogs usually don't show up.

I would love it though if he did as it will be huge for promoting Tennis in India.

He is not as humble as rafa,no?? He needs to be as humble as rafa and he needs to start opening charities to help poor in and around kanpur area!!

It is world group playoff, not a first round match. If Serbia loses, they would be relegated to Group I and won't be able to participate in Davis Cup World group next year.

LOL...I would have taken over his charity work in Kanpur. Unfortunately, I bid Sayonara to Kanpur in June and shift to south India.
Maybe, AAP can field him as a candidate in Delhi re-elections. I am sure, he would pay more visits to his constituency than our incumbent MLAs. ;)

Good point. Let's keep fingers crossed :).

Lot depends on how healthy is feeling and how he does in rest of the majors.

you are a south indian?? anyway it would be awesome if he could come to india..I would love to go there and see him live..Thanx God you are in kanpur for 2 more months..just look at my location.:

Novak not needed for Serbia to beat India.

Tipsa, Troicki, Zimonjic, Lajovic Bozaljic are more than enough. I expect a 4-1 result..

Your underestimating Serbia big time. Dusan Lajovic has had great results this year, right now #76, he'd beat all of the Indians except MAYBE Somdev. With or without Djokovic, no way Serbia loses.

Honestly, Novak Djokovic really shouldn't be required. He might come though due to national pressure.

You are underestimating India and esp. Yuki. He is on a tear this season. Somdev defeated Janko in 2011 and at present, Janko is losing to guys ranked 200. While Lajovic is pretty inconsistent. He lost to a guy ranked 273 in the world yesterday.
Also, Indian Captain is planning to call Bhupathi. Bhupathi-Bopanna would be deadly. 4-1 of Serbia can easily turn into 5-0 for India in absence of Djokovic.

I agree with Freebird. Serbia WITHOUT Novak, could lose to India.

Positives for India:
-Home soil, crowd support
-India has good doubles players. Even better if Bhupathi/Bopanna, or Paes/Bopanna partner together.
-Sommy D can play some good inspired tennis sometimes
-Yuki looking good this year
-If Novak doesn't play, since this tie will be exactly the next weekend after USO, big boost for India
-Tipsa hasn't played in ages. Even when he was in Top 20, our Sommy D defeated him in Serbia itself
-Troicki serving a doping ban. If he comes back by then, he'll be rusty and isn't exactly unbeatable
-Dusan guy is good, but doesn't have much experience & is patchy.
-Zimonjic is hardly in his prime form, these last couple of years.

So if everything falls into place, India can very well win 3 matches. I would love for it to happen :D

So if Novak comes to India, it'll be great as people will get a chance to see him play live. But India will lose.
So i hope he doesn't come ;)

I'm a bit surprised he hasn't already set foot there. Given his fussy vegetarian-like diet, penchant for yoga and Buddhist meditation techniques, I would have thought India would be like a spiritual home for him! :)

I had half-expected him to be spending most of his leisure time by now holed up in some ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas hanging on to every word of some guru or other! ;-)

Who is this "Yuki" guy FreeBird and LazyNinja keep talking about?

I think they are talking about Yuki Bhambri (21 year old). I guess he is pretty decent (won junior AO in 2009) though not sure if he as good as he is being made out.

I haven't followed him.

Aha, so you are a West Indian.

India is sure to have grass courts for the tie. Wonder if they will host the tie in East India or Central India.

No, they are contriving a plan to befuddle them with Hard courts in hot and humid conditions. Yearning for Mumbai or Chennai. I would take some time off to enjoy the DC environment if Novak visits.

Interesting that you say Mumbai, Chennai instead of Bombay,Madras but stick to Bangalore instead of Bengalooru. What gives ?

Well , "Mumbai" and "Chennai" sound a lot worse (not just tepid but hot and humid) in comparison and yet the problem is only with using Bengalooru ?
I am trying to get to the bottom of this.

I might watch it on TV/stream if it gets interesting.

Let's put it this way. Since my childhood, I've heard Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. Now when I'm a grown up, they suddenly they change it to Bengalooru which is in fact dull too. More related to psychology. There is a resistance to change just like some Uncles still keep using Windows XP when you've Windows 7 or 8. :)

LOL..If Fed were to play, you would have gone gaga over him.

Ok, I get it. Since you say you are moving to the city soon, maybe it will help you embrace the change. This whole business of renaming the city with it's native language name - it should either be uniformly done or not at all. Since the precedent has been set, better get on with the program.

And for the record, Win XP was more stable than Win 7 or 8

Nah, if Ralph were playing , I would have dropped everything and made it my life mission to watch him.

My ultimate dream : Watch Ralph rout someone 6-0,6-1,6-1 in a DC world group playoff

I hope that you don''t become PM. Changing name of almost every single city just to maintain uniformity will be bizarre.

Win XP is more stable than 7 or 8. Hmmm...May be you are one of those uncles (or Aunts ).

A closet Ralph fan. I knew it. 8)

Not every city, only where people want it. If it is less expensive to cancel the recent changes to maintain uniformity, that will be great too. No double standards, that's all

And what are you ? A toddler who has only used Win7/8 ? (Actually, Win 7/8 are better than Vista that was the ultimate disaster)

Gosh, after maintaining this secret for years, I had my cover blown in a moment of carelessness. What am I going to do now ?

That's okay for me. I've big issues in my life which are needed to be resolved. Naming of cities is not one of them.

Vista was indeed a disaster. I used a combo of 98/XP for my desktop in my school days. And then in college, I got my hands on 7 and still clinging to it (once again the same resistance). ;) Time to switch to Mac now. 8)

Post in Nadal News 2.0.

I think there's a chance he will travel to India. DC will be right after USO and he will a few week's rest after DC tie. Depends how he feels after USO, I guess. Also depends on other player's form. Troicki and Tipsarevic should get the job done against India but if they struggle with their form, Novak may just decide to play.

I hope he does, FreeBird. It would be wonderful for his Indian fans such as yourself, FreeBird, to see their favourite tennis player perform live. :)

Fed and Djokovic have never been to India, but humble Nadal has played there, and also has a foundation. Yet another reason why Nadal is the GOAT.

My roommate is an EE and a native of Bangalore. Isn't it the Silicon Valley of India?

Yeah, Bangalore is tech hub of India. Beginning with IT, now it has attracted other sectors too. There have been a lot of blooming start-ups in Bangalore.

Uh, back to the question: Novak is going to India - for Bhupathi's IPL.

Since Novak has already won Davis Cup, I don't see the urgency. And he's (deservedly) so loved in SRB, even if he skips and they fall out of the world group it's not going to tarnish his reputation in the country.

What the hell are you talking about? Novak is not vegetarian. And I never heard about him getting into Buddhism. What are you smoking?

Voila
I gave you too many clues with that sig update.

Well, i was confused between Direwolf and Linus.... Apparently, MTF doesn't allow you to view a poster's history without becoming a member. So i couldn't check other posts of those two to confirm.
But the sig (as you mentioned), was a direct giveaway

On topic, it was in today's Hindustan Times, that now even Leander Paes has made himself available for the Davis Cup :) This is after the news that Bhupathi made himself available for the tie against Serbia a couple of days back (even though he's retiring after Wimbledon this year).

So, could it be that the famous Indian duo- Paes-Bhupathi come together once again after all these years, to fight against the Serbian team?
Good news for Indian tennis, it seems :)

#IndiaToKickSerbiaOutOfDCWorldGroup

It is in September. With the news about Djoker going to be a dad and all that, I don't think he will come in September, so meh.

You can use your influence on the choice of surface. Though KLTA must have only one option ;-)

When is the wife's due date?

No. They can send the B or C team and win.

Novak will be celebrating a child birth and getting ready to try the Beijing/Shanghai double again. And another long winning streak to end the year.

With Somdev, Yuki and Bopanna in the squad, India could actually win 5-0 without Djokovic (if they play dead rubbers ofc)

I don't think he will come to India this time ,his wifes pregnancy is high at the moment .He has not seen her since the honeymoon, which lasted 7 days.So I believe that he wants to spend time with her, which is quite normal.
Wolud love to see him sometime to play there , he has a great fans in India .

It's an interesting one and I certainly don't think Serbia is a lock to win without Djokovic...needless to say you would probably put your house and everything else you own on Serbia winning if Djokovic does play though.

To take the obvious line I think a lot will depend on how he's feeling once his USO is complete and the progress of his wife's pregnancy. I don't believe he will play if he feels it will heavily impact his preparation and subsequent performance in the years remaining tournaments.
Again I've got no real substance to back up such comments but Djokovic certainly gives the impression that DC and representing Serbia is a priority to him. Therefore I'd imagine ensuring they remain in the World Group and in a position to compete for the DC whilst he is at the peak of his powers would be of importance to him.

I remember a few years back when Federer made the trip to Sydney to play DC and keep Switzerland in the World Group.

1 Billion people. Djokovic can't pass up on this opportunity to gain fans.

On a serious note he should not play. It became clear last year that he needed to start skipping DC. Although the play off is less of an issue as it comes after the grand slam season. Fed always played the PO but not the competition proper,
