Davis Cup Drama: Bergs knocks Garin to the ground

placebo

Rookie
Bergs breaks Garin at 5-5 in the third set and runs to his bench to celebrate, knocking down Garin by the shoulder in the process. The supervisor is called on after the incident and gives Bergs a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct. Huffed by the decision, Garin then refuses to play on. He receives a warning first, then a point penalty and then a game penalty. This was a decisive match in the group tie, so Belgium def. Chile 3-1

Garin is the biggest ***** on Tour but the Belgian player should have been DQed.

These guys track 120+ mph balls it wasn’t an accident. Easy suspension call. Tennis isn’t a contact sport and Garin had the right of way. Walking to a changeover is normal. Running and ramming your shoulder into someone’s head is not. Pretty simple to punish the one who is wrong.

It was an accident so warning was fair, garin drama queen
Falling to the floor was probably a little over the top but based on the swelling on his face and generally running into your opponent it is a DQ if hitting a player/umpire/fan with a tennis ball is a DQ in some instances. This isn't about favouritism it's consistency of the rules which tennis seems to have a problem with.

Br0, the slow-mo shows the force of impact was quite strong, that dude is big and coming in unrestrained and caught him shoulder to cheek. Laid him flat.

I can't imagine why there was not a longer medical attention given, ice and wellness check in general. Refere will see this video for a long time to come.

I agree with the player, he tells the supervisor that he doesn't have the balls to default the other player but he is going to default him.

I've only seen one angle. I think Bergs should have been defaulted but from what I've seen Garín looks to fall to the floor more in realisation he's been barged into and less so in being wiped out. Again, still no excuse for Bergs not to just celebrate the break elsewhere on the court or run over once Garín has crossed the net. I can't believe people get defaulted for hitting balls that strike officials/crowd members but not when you do something like this. I think they should play a doubles rubber on Monday to decide the tie.

Idk man. I think there was a bit of gamesmanship from garin. The swipe to the face was bad sure. But the whole falling down, I don’t buy it. Looks like classic flopping in soccer. Sure default for the physical contact at all, but I don’t think that contact laid him out, I think he let himself fall down.

His eye was literally swollen, how was he expected to play on? He got shoulder charged and knocked to the ground and then gets penalized for his opponent being reckless?

Insanity.
He deserves an Oscar for falling on the ground however he was body checked so I would award him a game penalty max not a dq, he should have played on

Soft. I would have gotten up my chair, then sprinted and charged towards Bergs and kneed his balls to bits.

Wait for Djokovic fans to say that if their idol had done that, he would have been disqualified.

Look at his eye for Pete’s sake. Dude got shoulder charged and left a swollen eye.

If Bergs had hit the ball in anger and hit Garin by accident, I bet they would have defaulted him. I don’t think they would be having a doctor question Garin to see if he was too hurt to play in that case. If your opponent does something to physically injure you even by accident, he should be defaulted.

you didn't have to wait too much... :X3:
PS: I'm surprised we haven't heard from Nickie yet...

are you suggesting he asked his teammates to beat him up in the locker room before posting this?
Guess officials were too afraid of the Belgian fans to call a default. This is one of the craziest things I've ever seen in tennis, it sounds like something out of an SNL skit or Seinfeld with Kramer as a ballboy.
was there a way to give bergs a penalty point or game, without DQing him?...

... but isn't it what he got?
(to his defense, not that simple to keep playing on when you're led 7-5 in the 3rd) ;)
