FAA just beat World No.1 in a Davis Cup tie ... in Spain ... for his Country.
Good result but somewhat mad Alcaraz is playing so soon after his triumph on Sunday. Coming off such a high is always risky physically and mentally, but if anything, I hope this jolts FAA back to life and he has a solid end to the year. As others have said here, the guy has serious untapped potential which appears to be getting stunted by mental aspects.

I’m believing Carlos was tired from his hard earned 2 weeks at Flushing. I hope nobody takes this loss too seriously, he’s always improving

maybe Felix can take this win and gain enough confidence to win a major for himself at the Australian open.....??:unsure:

If FAA had any skill AT ALL at the net and was right in the head. He could easily camp inside the Top 10 for years with ease and actually win something big. Unfortunately that is not the case

GB hanging on for dear life, just about. They need to win this then beat Kazakhstan in their next tie. The USA will be favourites against The Netherlands in their next tie, but The Netherlands are no pushovers with a solid doubles team so they only have to win 1 singles rubber to have a real prospect of winning the tie.

but can he win the slam though ? slam is the reason why they play

some crazy good doubles match with england(andy murray and Salsbury US open champion) and netherlands right now. Winner stay alive, if netherland win, USA moves on

If FAA can realize his complete potential, he’ll be even better than Alcaraz. FAA is a prodigy who’s sadly lost his way mentally. Hopefully Alcaraz’s success has lit a fire.
He has awful hands, he is "just" athletic and have good groundies and serve, which is a lot, but nowhere near as complete
I kind of have to agree with the sentiment. I've been rooting for FAA since he was 15, but he just doesn't have anywhere close to the same touch and feel as Alcaraz, nevermind the speed and defense.

Nice win for Felix, probably his first over a world #1. The fact that Felix and Jannik can compete with Carlos is heartening. Tennis will need new rivalries in the future.

I know that each country that went through to the next round (Italy and Sweden from Group A, Spain and Canada from Group B, Australia and Germany from Group C, and the United States and the Netherlands from Group D) it will be the #1 team against a different group's #2 team - does anybody know which group will be playing which other group in the next round? I was confused by what it said on the (poor) Davis Cup website.

Also: how do they decide who is first between the U.S. and the Netherlands? Do they play one additional match or is it based on which team won the most sets?

Alcaraz seems to have a matchup problem with Auger-Aliassime. Aliassime isn't in good form, he just lost to Kwon in straight sets but he won this, so weird. Even if he injured himself in the 2nd set last year, FAA completely dominated the 1st set in NY. And in Indoors fast court he won quite easily. The last 2 sets were a beatdown. I don't think he's even lost his serve in 2 matches. Will be interesting to see what happens the next time they meet. When we see the matchups between Auger-Aliassime Sinner and Alcaraz, I would never think Alcaraz is the one who won a Slam and 2 Masters.

A few posts ago you said FAA was a mug. Just beat #1. You're such a troll.

Just say you're not very smart. Geez. Anyway, FAA played 10!!! finals in his career and won 1!!! He is a mug, mental midget and a headcase. Where did I say he's not very talented with huge potential though?

I looked at the Davis Cup website, which I find to be of very poor quality, trying to find the answer to my question: Spain and Canada are tied 4-2 as are the U.S. and the Netherlands - how is the tie broken? Do they play a playoff match or is it done by looking at which country won more sets and/or games? Does anybody know for certain?

It's the head that seperates Alcaraz from Sinner and FAA. Especially from FAA (just look at his finals record 1-9). With Alcaraz, you're never "in fear" of losing early or to a nobody and even when he's trailing, you know he's giving 100% and could come back easily. FAA looks absolutely beat and devastated at times, his body language, spraying UEs left and right.

But when they face Alcaraz, it is very clear that they have the game to hurt Carlos. Big serve (1st serve only in Sinners case) and consistent, big groundies.

Carlos acknowledged that he wasn't feeling 100% well today. I hope he is better on Sunday.

O.K., so I just checked out the Davis Cup website:

Australia will play either Spain or Canada - whichever one is the runner-up in Group B

Italy will play either the Netherlands or the U.S. - whichever one is the runner-up from Group D

Then:

Spain or Canada will play Sweden

U.S. or the Netherlands will play Germany

I just don't understand how the tie is broken?

Poor Kwon, has to play totally jacked up Alcarez looking for a win for spain. they are already up 1-0 , RBA won the first match fairly easy. Does Alcarez always get this pumped for his matches ?? :-D

I've been hard on Canada's tennis players in the past but one thing I will say in their defence is that Canada has a knack for punching above their weight class in Davis Cup. Always great performances by our players, no matter their rank. They really bring it in international competition. We need doubles specialists though. For the life of me I can't figure out why Pospisil just stopped playing doubles. Really odd. Players exactly like him stick to doubles and make a great career out of it, especially the ones who are really good at it, like he is.

Looking forward to our QF against Germany in November. Very winnable.
