that should be a nice tie ! :)
according to the rankings, we should have a safin vs gonzalez on the 1st day... IF safin & tursunov are the single players ! (maybe andreev could play ?)

Chile all the way.

Dima has problems with his right wrist and Safin some little problems with his fingers.
Especially if Nico does well and deep in Vina del Mar and raises his confidence-this will go to Chile.

I chose Chile 4-1. Gonzalez has been playing extremely well and if Nico has the confidence, he can play great as well.

Davydenko said he cant play(i think to tired) ummm Youzhny was not chosen as tarpishev wants to give other players a chance something like that lol

It will be a tough for russia since they just won it... no inspiration and also tursunov suks on clay..most likely to see Safin and Andreev play and Safin & Tursunov in doubles.... i chose Russia 3-2 but its all up to the doubles really.

About Tursunov sucking on clay... I agree. Being pushed to 17-15 in a fifth set against Roddick at home on clay is NOT cool.

i voted to russia but before i knew that davy won't play , now i vote for chile , gonzo would take any other two on russia's list ..

HAHAHAH ok ok man i understand where you coming from i attended the match but i still got to say Tursunov suprised me that day.

But if you look at his clay record it is poor he jokes about his lack of ability and success on clay courts. or another thing he said was “Clay is for girls!”

his record is poor i cant seem to find the exact stats.... but i know its poor :) Still he is fun to watch

I said Chile 4-1 assuming that Fernando will most likely win both of his singles, Massu will probably win one of his at least and doubting that we're losing the doubles. .... but you never know.

I'm giving the Chileans a slight edge because they're playing at home and we all know how loud they can get. I think the country who wins the doubles match will win the tie.

Davydenko and Youzhny are not playing because they chose not to. Kolya says he has chance to get to number 2 in the world and won't play for Russian team.. and Misha wants to rebuild his ranking. Tursunov is injuried with his left wrist and most likely going there as an inspiration. Korolev has injuried his wrist too.

Andreev is playing tournament in Chile this week and will most likely play singles along with Marat, who has not practiced since AO loss to heal his finger.

It would take a miracle to beat Chile with their weak team this year.

btw, Chile I think is still unbeatable at home in last decade or so.

Massu got thrashed by the man who says clay is not a good surface for him. Re-think, Marat.

1-0 Russia

yes!Marat for RG 2007!!

he says it about grass as well. And hard court :))

Russian are doing well, actually. Andreev is two sets to one and a break up. This is a surprise, Gonzo has had an edge over Igor, has beaten him several times. I watched their match in Wimbledon on some 224th court some years ago, there were like 7 or 8 spectators around - and that was some slugfest, both guys have killer forehand and are never shy to use it. Gonzo won but only just. One of the best matches that year imho, and only 8 people have seen it. :)))

Andreev beats Gonzo on clay. This is something. How come? Has he changed his grip? :)) Now it will be soo difficult for Chile to come back.
It is a great result for Igor - one monkey off his shoulder. It must have been his first ever win over Gonzales (?) C'mon Russia! Who's in the doubles?

What they said before the match:

“I think the draw puts pressure on Marat (Safin),” said Hans Gildemeister, captain of the home team. “He is forced to win that point; the Russians cannot afford to lose it.”

“I have great confidence that Nicolas (Massu) will win that match, so (Igor) Andreev will have a lot of pressure upon him when facing Fernando Gonzalez.”

The Chilean singles players were quite optimistic about the outcome of the match. “We are both playing well,” said Massu. “If I win, Fernando will do it very well (in the second singles), and we may finish 2-0 up in the first day.”

He-he-he-he .... Pressure? What pressure???

what the hell is happening to Gonzalez?

He's exhausted. You can tell in the way he isn't using his legs to launch himself into his serve, and that his movement is, well, slowwwwww.

Guy needs a month in a hyperbaric chamber with an unlimited supply of gatorade, pasta and massages.

Add to that the fact that Andreev was playing very good (although he did get a little tight while closing out sets/match) and Andreev gets the win.

Wasn't Andreev the last person to beat Nadal on clay? ;)

Safin/Kunitsyn v. Massu/Gonzalez

I suspected as much from the tone of an interview on DC site that he gave yesterday.

Udachi Rossya!
