Davis Cup has lost a lot of love over the years with all the format changes and scheduling challenges.
For old coots like me, it was frustrating to get rid of the home ties and to go to Best of 3 sets.
But what I really loved about the old format was the importance of doubles and the fact it was highlighted on its own day.
Spain up 2 rubbers to Zero for the US after day 1, lots of focus and drama for doubles. If Spain wins dubs the dubs team brings glory and solidified the title. If the US snags the dubs rubber, they start the turnaround for a full upset.
Now with the format having the 2 singles matches first, sure it is the decider if the 1st and 2nd matches split, but otherwise it doesn't even have to be played.
I think at the very least they should either start with dubs or have it the 2nd match and make the #2 singles the decider.
Unfortunately, maybe in a few years it won't matter because DC might disappear.
