Gosh, how does Gimblestob come off with questioning Gasquet's heart? The guy hasn't shown himself to be a Nadal, but if he says he is injured why sow doubt?

Roddick and Mathieu starting.

Gimelstob said he hear Forget pleading with Gasquet to play. That suggests that Gasquet probably could have played if he had sufficient commitment and determination.

A number of posters on this forum said the same thing on Thursday and Friday. Justin is there, perhaps he has information that we don't have, or perhaps he's just spouting an opinion like every other tennis fan does.

Roddick was hitting blistering returns (when he wasn't aced!). Yet Llodra came in everytime even on his second serve! I didn't think anyone on the tour could do this anymore. Llorda was sweet off the volley, handling Roddick's heavy shots. And his overhead was very reliable. Now and then Llodra would flub a half-volley right off the shoetops or similar great Roddick return or pass, but Llodra won enough of the points on serve during the sets to hold. But one short volley off a low bullet in the tiebreak was all that Roddick needed.

Yeah, I would compare Llodra to a classic roadster sports car with his game... something like an E-type Jag. Again, Roddick is just the monstor-truck-act of the ATP tour. I could relate to Llodra's game. Except for the serve, he doesn't hit the ball any harder than a good 4.5 player. But his movement is so fluid and quick; his hands so sure; he's so accurate; he doesn't make unforced errors. Llodra is a very pleasant throwback to a much earlier style of tennis. It's great to see that someone is a talented enough athlete to win at this game.

Just a couple of things to add. Llodra is pretty high, he is 6'3" I think which is great. Now knowing this, consider his movement ? Pretty good ha? Anyways I think he hits much better than 4.5 on serve, it just seems like very slow when he hits it because he has such service motion. He is a laid back character. I do enjoy his play although you rarely can see the guy playing singles in important events. Doubles however, he can leave a great mark on doubles providing he finds a decent partner. He is 28 this year so he can pretty much play doubles for another 7-8 years and he is a slim guy and a good mover. I expect his 14 titles in doubles to multiply over the next few years.

I think we have to start a poll on how many games the US is going to win...I vote less than 30!:p

And here I thought what are you talking about. And then I got to it. CLAY> If the matchup stays the same ( Blake & Roddick singles and Bryans doubles ) I bet that USA will take more games in a doubles match than in all the singles together. Blake & Roddick are well known clay court specialists.

I wonder if USA has some other guys who could be called for clay ?

I thought about that and I think it's going to be a hard fought tie on the USA''s part, they know what they are against and will give it their all.

Look at the Sweden/Argentina tie, it turned out to be a tough tie despite Argentina's advantage. :)

because it was a big match and players with heart would fight it out. he didnt. i heard him say he asked mathieu why gasquet wasnt playing and he shook his head and walked away. so obviously something happened that we dont know.

Having in mind Soderling and 2 veterans are not aliens on clay and having in mind none of the Argents is named Nadal .. I think it will not be as hard fought as you think MEAC.

Gasquet is a great guy overall but has a history with these things. I know he amased me personally when he retired because of the air coditioning from USOpen '07, was it ? Silly. Anyways he did it in first week, which was even more stange.

It's going to be so lopsided that it's not going to be even funny, same as when Spain visited the US last time (Nadal didn't even bother, which is understandable in a player that has a shot at #1 singles.) To the question of whether the Americans could bring different people, sure, bring those who passed 1st round of the FO last year. Hmm, wait...

I am not at all surprised by the US's victory, though I did think France would win at least one more match. Everyone has good days or not so good, but I thought during Mathieu's matches he made way too many unforced errors, overhitting balls, etc.

I am looking forward quite to Spain and USA match-up.

Spain will sweep them except for the doubles.

Not much more than an exhibtion match

Blake wins it over Gasquet 67 64 64, and USA clinches it 4 - 1!

Gasquet clearly wasn't putting much effort into running down shots or trying to keep rallies going more than a few shots. He went for winners early, and hit about 45 in the three sets.

He says he's got tendonitis in a knee. Mainly he just wants to get out of North Carolina and back to Europe with as little wear and tear as possible and try to be ready for the Europen clay season.

Last year Nadal didn't even show up for Spain's tie with the US at the same site. Neither did JC Ferrero -- just some Spanish third-stringers -- and nobody criticized Nadal. Everybody understood that Nadal had more important things ahead of him: winning big clay court titles and earning lots of ranking points and cash. He didn't need to go to Winston-Salem and waste himself in a losing cause on a fast surface that his team had little chance in winning.

Roger Federer takes the same approach with Swiss Davis Cup team play. So did Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl and most other top tennis professionals during their careers.

Gasquet's aleady devoted himself to French Davis Cup play since he was a teenager. He shouldn't be harshly criticized for not wasting himself in a losing cause. Or next time, he should just do like Nadal and refuse to even be on the team unless it's a homecourt match on a surface he likes.
