Davydenko: I'm no Federer or Nadal

''Never one to make news with his mouth, Nikolay Davydenko held nothing back on the eve of the Australian Open. The veteran Russian even said that "it's only tennis" for Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.''

In a recent interview, Davydenko accused Federer and Nadal--among others--of thinking "only" about tennis.

"I have a good life," the sixth-ranked Russian explained. "It’s not only about tennis for me. Maybe I am not a champion like Nadal or Federer. These guys mostly think about tennis. For them, it’s only tennis; winning tournaments, winning a grand slam, dreaming maybe every day about it. I am not that guy, I am different."

actually he was a bit misrepresented. He actually said, "I don't cry like Federer at winning a grand slam. He holds it in all two weeks and then explodes. I am different."

He plays as much as he can to make as much money as possible, whereas Fed and Nadal want to be the best.

Davy fans, sorry but IMO he does not have the mentality to win a slam.
 
a bit OT: but how do I change the title. It's slightly misleading, as I just got it from MTF, but realized he never exactly said the words so I want to change it.

I want him saying this in a video. Until then, I don't believe he meant it the way it was published. Davydenko is a great player, and if anything, he works as hard as Nadal and Federer.


Either way, he's not gonna make himself popular by saying this. We fans don't care about personal lifes. We want passion for the game and the best level of play possible.

Indeed.. It makes it very very different. Now it's more like. They only play for titles, for me a semifinal or a final would be great. They hold it back for two weeks and then explode, because only the title matters.

Davydenko never said that Federer and Nadal had no life. His point was that they live tennis more than he does, which is probably true.

I know, I should have bothered to read the entire article, but I found it interesting or whatever and just took it from mtf and then realized like an idiot that he never said that.

Why is it a surprise that Federer and Nadal have "no life" outside of tennis?

Tennis is their life. That's what it takes to be the best. If you want to be the best for an extended period of time, the less life outside of tennis you can have.

Even Sampras says that he sacrificed a lot to be the best. Look at Agassi's mercurial career. On the highs (pardon the pun), when he was the best, he had to play and focus.

Hell, some guys have no life struggling to come anywhere close to where those guys are (even where Davydenko is) and have little to show for it.

More power to Davydenko for enjoying his time while making a living on tour.

Too bad he didn't figure it out at a time when beating Federer was the equivalent of winning the biggest titles.
Maybe it has something to do that it isn't as hard nowadays as it used to be?

The funny thing is that Davydenko played more tournaments than anyone for years. He was travelling almost every single week, unlike Federer who played a lot less events but won almost all of them.
 
Well all I can say is thank God Federer and Nadal think, eat and sleep tennis, because we would have missed a lot of fun if they didn't
 
Yes,I agree.
He means because of the publicity and the media they can't have much of a private life.Whereas he,who nobody pays any attention to,can do wahtever he wants-and he likes it.

NEVER ever take anything from MTF at face value... it's called 'The Asylum' for a good reason. ;)
 
I hope Roger reads this and I hope Davy meets him in the Qtrs. I also hope Roger does to Davy what he did to Roddick a few years ago when Andy said 'I'm closing the gap with Roger' after winning Kooyong (an exo).

As much as I like Davydenko, he needs to shut up and perform on the Grand Stage. No need for the trash talk.

I realized my mistake now. I've done, that in the past, just copy and paste threads out of laziness, but most of them were accurate. Sadly this was not. Gah, where is the *facepalm* when you need it. major failure on my part.

With the number of tournaments he plays, I would have thought that he was a hard worker, a player who tries the best (what Nadal and Federer do). Unless he only plays for the money.

It wasn't exactly trash talk. The title is misleading, I apologize on my part. If you read the the second link I posted after the edit:, it's much better.

Don't worry about it, its nothing particularly egregious. Yes, the title sounds a bit sensational and does not exactly reflect what Davy said, but that's what he meant.

THAT's what he meant.That he thinks it's better that the media don't pay so attention to him,because he can have private life unlike Roger and Rafa.

I like people who talk trash but can back their talk up, Davydenko chatting rubbish as usual.

I think that article has just cemeted the reason he won't win a slam; because he doesn't want it bad enough. Most top players 'dream' of winning slams.

I've seen Federer doing some shopping with Mirka with my own eyes, not even half a mile from where I live.

Most people were afraid to approach him, or didn't even get who it was.

I am suprised to hear soft spoken Davydenko say that the top guys have no life. And then all they think about is tennis. How does he know or care what they are thinking about? I guess he is trying to build himself up by saying he also has a life and is a better person because of this. Maybe maybe not. He played the most tournaments last year of any pro player if I remember correctly. Strange.
 
Its not worth psychoanalyzing Kolya. I liked it more when no one interviewed him and all we knew about him was what we got to see on court. :)

or maybe he should say:UNLIKE federer and nadal,my family is poor and I had nowhere to sleep for years.I had to earn the food I would eat at night,during the day with my racquets.

No he didn't had any bodyguards, it was just him and Mirka. It was back in 2007.

I wasn't as much into tennis back then, but my friend has always been a tennis nut so we went over, he pushed some whispering people aside and said "hi roger", Federer looked over and said "hi" as well and that was pretty much it.

Most people were just watching from the distance. Maybe a dozen asked for Federer's autograph, but on one was harassing them. What I found most remarkable was that it was a grocery store, and not some fancy fashion shop or something like that.

Interestingly Federer has bought a house only a few miles away from that shop, it's were Mirka stayed with the twins at the very beginning.

haha,I am generally shy in such situations but if it was Roger I would probably jump in front of gather all my courage and ask for a photo in front of the the milk fridge or to autograph my cereal box!If I were you,I would also shop only from that shop during tennis off season.:p
