Davydenko: Federer and Nadal have no life

heyy idiot did you read the article at all ? he never said they don't have a life, just said they are much more passionate at the big titles which is why they win...but yeah he's a total fake.
I did read the article and I didnt mention anything about davydenko saying federer and nadal have no life. Davydenko is an excellent player but all I am saying is that Davydenko claims to say that he doesnt care about tennis like Federer and Nadal but still practices and plays a lot. He cares about tennis alright, he just cant win slams.

Also, No need for personal insults.

true enough I'm sure you're not an idiot. however, I don't see him saying he doesn't care about tennis less than them. what I personally took from the article is that Davy has other interests in his life outside of tennis, while Rafa and Roger are either playing or thinking of the game. of course Davy still plays/practices all the time, it's his profession.

Fair enough. However, I think Federer and Nadal are well rounded men who have other interests in life too. The thing is that they are so successful at tennis that they have both have become symbols for mens tennis. They have so much expectations on their shoulders that they have to promote the image to the world that they care about nothing but tennis.

Does anyone else think this is just him half taking the ****?

The part about federer crying is very true though, all he said is federer bottles up his emotion and releases in one go while he doesnt let it build up..

I think you can still think about tennis, win loads of grand slams, be world famous, have millions in the bank, be happily married with two beautiful daughters, be loved by people everywhere you go... and still have a good life. :)

Well Federer and Nadal are damn good at what they do and I'm sure they very happy with their career. That's all that counts.

I'm sure you can't have too many hobbies outside of tennis when you have to maintain a career at the top for years like Nadal and Fed. I didn't need a Davy interview to be aware of that fact!

Interesting p.c.

Q. You are one of the favorites of the tournament. How do you deal with this? This year many players like Nadal or Murray thought Davydenko can win.

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Oh, really? Surprising, you know, these guys start to talking about me, because maybe now. Before, if nobody talking, then nobody scare. Now it's everyone scare. That's what's is start to talking about me and favorites and everything.

But it's interesting feeling. Now I feel like I can beat everyone. That's was these guys now, you know, something feel different. Before no because I know I can win, but mostly I losing against these guys. But now I can beat everyone. It's good feeling.

...

Q. Do you enjoy scaring people?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Enjoy which people?

Q. Scaring everybody that you're scaring now.

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO:
Oh, you mean... Yes, why not? Really, you know, if somebody scare of me, if I go on the court, it's very good. You know, then I have more confidence. If I don't feel by self good, I know everybody scare play against me, and I still have something, you know, feel I can win this match.

Q. This is a new feeling then?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO:
Why new feeling? I have always the same feeling, but now little bit better. Little better feeling.

...

Q. Your win in the Masters, what has it changed for you?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO:
Really nothing. Just I won $1 million. It's okay. Nothing special (laughter.)

Q. What did you do with all this money? Did you buy a house in Russia?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO:
Not yet. Not yet. Some invest money. You know, if you win money, you need to make more money. That's what's I try to do. Not only with tennis make money. Something else. Some business also to do. Because with tennis you can't do this so much money.

That's was is very important after tennis what you can do and how you invest your money in what you do after.

Q. Did you buy something for your wife?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO:
Look, if I buy everything to my wife, how I can invest money?

...

Q. Do you notice anything about yourself, that you're playing better, anything that is better now?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO:
...I want to be fast. I want to running fast. Like Del Potro tell me now I am like PlayStation 3 in London. Now I try to come level PlayStation 4, to be faster and faster.

...

Q. Since you won the Masters, are you more recognized in the street? Do you sign more autographs?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO:
I hope not. Then is not so many like say celebrity guys. I am not Paris Hilton. I don't want to be like this. I don't want to be like Nadal, Federer. These guys I never see by breakfast. They stay in the room and take room service.
For me better go downstairs, you know, take breakfast, or dinner to go somewhere, not to be so much famous.

I don't get the second part.

He doesn't want to be like Federer or Nadal because they eat breakfast in their hotel room?
And if his life is so great, why does he keep talking mostly about money?
I mean I'd completely understand if he was a bit fat and wouldn't win as much for that reason (like Nalbandian with his many hobbies), but he seems to not do much besides tennis and "business".

Don't know about Federer, but Nadal plays golf, watches soccer (cheers for Real Madrid), likes fishing, goes out with his girlfriend, etc. He has a big life outside tennis.

And what sort of life Kolya Davydenko has? Stays at home with his fatty? Don't think that he goes to the opera or reads books. Hardly has enough education for that. And of course he doesn't use room service: you have to pay for it.

He is meaning that he would not want to be too recognised in the streets as that was the question asked. He still wants to do normal things like being able to go down to have breakfast, go out freely without being chased by media like Paris Hilton etc etc.
and what is so wrong about saying that? He is just a normal guy and has had a low profile all these years and has enjoyed his career and still enjoyed plenty of personal freedom to go where he pleases incognito.
All he is saying is that Federer and Nadal lead such high profile lives that every single thing they do is out in the open and reported on. They don't have too much privacy which is why they don't appear in public nor join in the daily activities like having breakfast downstairs etc etc.

Please don't read any negative in his words as there is none. He has always show Federer and Nadal the highest respect. Even when he wins against them, he doesn't rub it in by jumping up and down like a clown. He shows respect man.

Now this takes the cake of utter ignorance.
He may not be highly educated but he sure has a damn more successful career than you can ever dream of for yourself.

Too pathetic when haters spew venom.

The interview shows once again how important money is for Davydenko. It's important for everyone. But for him, it's obsessional. If he's not dumb, he should know that a GS would be the best thing that could happen to his bank account. Not only for the prize money himself, but because, even with his lack of charisma, he would make a lot more money with contracts, exhibitions and everything he wants. He thinks about his job all the time since he plays tournaments all the time. He just started to play all those tournaments (which means being less fresh for the GS) because he was insecure. Probably not "brave" enough to challenge Federer when he was at his best and since it was impossible to win a GS without beating him, he gave up. Now, maybe he's realizing that maybe he could have done something else. Maybe he would have won more money if he had been less greedy.

And what do you know about my career? I am completely satisfied with it.

Kolya Davydenko is not only highly uneducated, he is also highly envious. It's not the first time when he takes a jab at a players who are much more popular. He had a similar problem with Marat Safin. When Marat dropped out of top 10 by far, and Davydenko was a very consistent No.3-4-5, still it was Marat who was immensely popular in Russia and outside it, and Davydenko was lagging behind not only Marat, but Youzhny and Andreev as well. The worst thing is that Kolya was stupid enough to mention it in his pressers.

I've never seen him as a respectful player. He's too shy to make a big fuss, it's true. But his comments are rarely nice. Not for Nadal and Federer in particular, just in general. Not surprising that he doesn't get sponsors. He is the kind of player who is able to say "I take money them, love it, good money, but is bad product".

I don't get the second part.

".

yes.
That's a perfect logical and incredibly important reason!:D

but in all seriousness all the ppl judging Kolya for mentioning money and money should get in touch with reality. All these players travelling al lthe time all over the world don't do it for the goodnes of their heart. They practice every single day for 5-6 hours under the sun and the wind in the cold and in the heat why??for fame and pride?no!For money first and foremost.

Davydenk ohad a rough life and anyone with a little compassion and understanding would find his comments perfectly normal.

I'm not reading negatives in his words, I've problems to understand his points.

He doesn't want to be a high profile celebritiy, nothing wrong with that. But he seems to forget that Federer and Nadal are able to live their own lives in Manacor and Basel/Wollerau without an unbearable amount of attention.

During the season I bet that Dayvdenko works as hard as Federer, so he doesn't have time to do a lot of other stuff either.
I can't imagine that there's a lot of difference in the daily routine between Dayvdenko and Federer/Nadal, they need to train a lot, take care of their diet and so on.

I understand what he means. He means that he doesn't do the extra effort that those 2 do because he's not so ambitious. But it's completely illogical since he plays more tournaments. At the end, maybe he's less focused, but he still earns less money while working more. And money is the most important thing for him. So...

Listen as Safin fan I tell you Davidenko doesn't want Safin celebrity status in Russia, but he wants recognition for his achievments, isn't that normal for any person who puts a lot work in his job, every person wants recognition, but not everybody wants fame.

yes.
That's a perfect logical and incredibly important reason!:D

Of course, money is important for the players. All of them. That being said, once they get some extra comfort (it just concerns some lucky guys, of course), money remains important but top players don't think about money when they play a tournament. I don't think that Federer or Nadal think about the beautiful cheque they could get if they win a GS. Of course, they have more money than Davydenko, but Davydenko has a lot of money too. You can always want more. Federer and Nadal could think that they are poor if they compare themselves with Tiger Woods. And don't tell me that their family was rich. They were not poor, but their son earned more money than they had ever had. Davydenko had to struggle more, but those bad days ended many years ago.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of Davykenko, but if a player is truly happy making big money at tennis while not worrying about winning Grand Slams, I can't fault him. Mats Wilander used to makes these sorts of comments during his playing career as well.

Not everybody is obsessed with being number 1. Nothing wrong with that.

I agree. It's just that there are some contradictions in what Davydenko says. Maybe Wilander said that, but he still won 7 GS. 3 in the same year. He was actually a better player in the GS and even won 3 of them in the same year.

exactly. You don't understand. You think that what he had to go through all that trauma and the psychological pressure to succeed,to earn money as soon as possible from his parents and his brother, will just go away as soon as he succeeded.No.And yes Federer's and esp Nadal's families were upper-middle class. Not poor like Davy's.

What do you call a "poor family"? I don't know his personal life particularly well, so maybe you know things that I don't. From what I know, Davydenko's brother already played tennis, studied at the university. Davydenko also went to Germany to improve his tennis when he was still a child. It doesn't sound like a starving family for me. All the players don't come from a Gulbis' type of family, I think.

I think it's different in Russia. Many players are playing to get out of bad conditions unlike the us where to even play tennis you need to be rich or at least upper middle class

I think his father was a factory worker. His parents sent him away when he was 11 to go to germany to practice and for a long while he was travelling around with his brother during the early years of his carreer having to sleep on the car, having to win to eat that night. That's what I mean about poor family.

I don't boast an experty on psychology or on Davydenko's psyche, but it is my opinion that people who have been through all that have just different priorities than say Nadal ..or me for instance who had the luck to have everything provided by my parents.

Unfortunately, many players have to stop their career because of the lack of money. It's not that their family is really poor, but if a player doesn't get any support from his Federation, it costs a lot of money at the beginning. And I already heard or read some similar things about low ranked players. What Davydenko went through is not exceptional at all. Of course, some players are more privileged. But if Davydenko's family was so poor, how could they send their sons to Germany? Don't tell me that Davy was already making a living at 11.

yes most players don't even make it.Davy did,and what he went through made him who he is today, just as happens with everyone.

Most parents make deals with academies to pay later off the earnings of the player.

I like the fact that people are criticizing a guy who can barely speak English, and when the interview was done in English. He most likely meant no disrespect to either Nadal or Federer, and very likely he had a wrong choice of words.

His family gave them just enough to make it over there, after that both Davydenko and his brother were basically on their own.

This might have sounded a bit harsh due to the language-barrier, his English is not very good. I have a hard time seeing that he really means this.

Federer - 15 slams
Nadal - 6 slams
Davydenko - 0 slams

Hey, you reap what you sow. They'll have plenty of time to live life when they're retired. And with some trophies.

I hope Davydenko wins AO '10. He is in the best form right now..if he can get by Federer I would definitely mark him as the favorite. His form yesterday (1st and 2nd sets) was the best of any of the top players.

I can't believe this discussion is still going on. Much Ado About Nothing, folks.

are you serious?!?Here we have devoted pages and pages on topics such as Sharapova's mustache and if there's a job available as Rafa's shower attendant!!If anything this is a very tennis related topic for tw standards!:D

Hahahaha, well at least the general atmosphere for most of the threads is a lot more light-hearted and friendly than over there. Guess what, I even find more info on the actual TENNIS over here. :)
Too bad there's no v-betting over here though.

yes GM is scary. As karin likes to call it the asylum. I do like mtf for the non tennis section and the chat threads and of course the smileys.

Anyway check out the # of tournaments Federer imparticular and Davydenko plays. It looks like Federer has alot more life off tour than Davydenko if anything. He is the one who takes vacations and breaks at his own whim which Davydenko hardly ever does. He is also the one with a wife and kids, granted maybe Davydenko does too, I am not interested in him to even care. Davydenko is widely regarded as a workhorse. I dont doubt Federer works hard, but there is no way Davydenko is someone who has all these diverse activites and is still able to stay so high ranked while leading a balanced life. Considering he is a workhorse overachiever there is simply no way to believe that, he isnt Nalbandian.

His comments just reek of bitterness. He is basically a poor mans Kafelnikov who is still slamless.
