3,0 for kozlov, he looked bored / well aware nothing from the other side of the court could hurt him

good 4,2 win for paul over buchanan

tiafoe in a tight first set with the top seed jaziri, headed to a TB

Interesting result for pro tennis vs college tennis today. 14 months ago kozlov won 6 games off ca at Kalamazoo. Today, after a year of college tennis ca wins 3 games off kozlov. Either kozlov has really improved or ca has not or perhaps a combination of both.
2 players going in different directions that's for sure.

1) kozlov's game of mixing up low slices and hard flat drives is pretty well suited for indoor tennis, i think - obviously kzoo is outdoors and the current challenger is indoors
2) kozlov was in a rut earlier this year as his pro ranking slid back a couple hundred spots and he was traveling around the world without many pro wins to his name / probably without much confidence - with his current win streak i think that confidence issues has probably quickly disappeared

I'm curious to see how Escobedo does against former UT #1 Dimitar Kutrovsky, could be a nice match.

I think it's just CA, and not really college tennis in general. CA is in a bit of a rut lately, he lost 1st rd Futures in Houston to his teammate Ritschard, who played 5 or 6 last year. Right after the season ended CA got to the semis of a Futures either in Wake Forest or Charlottesville. Plus he got to the semis in Claremont Futures. Then he lost to Mackie McDonald, DB, pretty routinely, then his teammate, and now Kozlov. And, as far as the Kozlov match, I wouldnt say he looked bored, cause CA was running him around pretty good, its just that Kozlov was content just scrambling around till CA made an error.

That being said, the fact that Ryan Shane, the defending NCAA champion can lose to an incoming freshman, Rybakov, is still a bit puzzling to me. Does that mean that this class of jrs is really good, Tiafoe, Paul, Fritz, etc. Rybakov lost in the qtrs, so did Mmoh. Mmoh just beat Harrison. Or does it mean Shane isnt that good??

Kozlov just split with David Rice, interesting match, his slice seems to really bother these guys.

Koz with the win over the guy who took out the #2 seed, he's got good momentum.

Predictions for Rubin vs Donaldson?
I caught the tail end of the interview they did with Koz and he mentioned his new coach who was top 16 at one time and "a cool guy" , do you know who they are talking about ?

Edit: Apparently it's Andrei Cherkasov

Starting to look like Donaldson might have plateaued a bit. I was thinking he would've been close to cracking the top 100 by now.
I image Fritz will get another special exempt so won't need a wildcard.

I wouldn't worry too much bout Donaldson plateauing just yet. Very few players have a ranking trajectory that just rises in a straight line. I remember Wawrinka hovering around 150 for about a year or so when he was a similar age, so that wouldn't be a bad template to follow...
Now can we say that Donaldson has plateaued?? He lost 1st rd Maui Challenger today to a LL, Alex Bolt. He won this Challenger last year, so he's gonna be dropping 80 pts, plus the pts he dropped from losing 1st rd Aussie qualies this yr, compared to 2nd rd qualies last yr.
