Del Potro Is a Serious Threat to Nadal

Probably posting from the court between sets.

A fresh Delpo could be a threat to Nadal on HC.

It's funny how both times Nadal got Delpo again in a major, he faced a horrible one. Why can't Fed get the same luck?
Because Delpo only starts goating when Fed is on the other side of the net. Annoying, but that just how things are.

Delpo was an embarrassment this match.

All right, so I just watched the highlights of the match.

My initial impression was that Del Potro did not return particularly well against Nadal.

His backhand returns were landing short and his forehand was not explosive enough to really give Nadal problems.

Nadal had the right conditions to excel in this match and really out-classed Del Potro. Badly!

I am looking forward to the finals between Nadal and Thiem tomorrow.

Based on what I saw from the Cecchinato/Thiem semi-final it should be a competitive match.

Definitely the biggest test for Nadal of the tournament.

However, I am going with Rafa to win his 11th French Open title in four sets over Thiem.

It's been almost nine years since Juan Martin has been to a grand slam final.

Since the 2010 Australian Open he has been 0-2 in grand slam semi-finals.

But there is a reason why I believe these stats might soon change.

For the first time since 2009 Juan Martin del Potro is in the semi-finals of Roland Garros and while he's going to have to face the greatest clay-court player of all time on Friday.

I believe that he'll have a legitimate chance against Nadal.

Here's why:

1. Del Potro has one of the biggest forehands of all the players on tour and like Soderling before him is capable of taking the racquet out of Nadal's hands. Yes, even on clay. He would have to do this for 3 sets which doesn't seem likely but if the match is played with high humidity then there is a chance for Del Potro.

2. Nadal may have sustained a wrist injury and he would be hard pressed to beat Del Potro at less than 100%.

3. Aside from the other big four members and Stanislas Wawrinka, Del Potro is really the only player that has proven that he can take down Federer or Nadal at this stage in a slam.

Will he be able to do it on Friday?

I would love to get your thoughts.

P.S. If you've enjoyed watching Nadal's matches at Roland Garros this year then you might want to check-out the King of Clay podcast series that covers each of his victories at Roland Garros (including his loss to Robin Soderling in 2009.)

I really hate these rolling back the years threads with no basis in reality. Delpo had an easy draw and to his credit played Nadal as tough as he could, but as a Thiem fan he just didn't do enough.
