Del Potro....the most likeable guy on tour?

David Goffin. I can't see anything offensive about David, nor have I heard of any controversy. Quiet and humble, goes about his business.
i think he would win the "indifferent" award. People don't really like him or dislike him from what I've seen

Maybe. I think he's getting a quite a lot of fans these days, with the more limelight he's consistently getting, posting good results. A title drought for three years is amazing though. Hope he can get his hands on one soon, losing his last 5 or so IIRC..

I agree that Goffin is not offensive...and I actually like him. However...that doesn't make him the most likeable. Does he reach out to other players?
I'm not saying that he should, but my original post was that Juan Martin actually does that. In the midst of his competition he can still feel so much empathy for others.

There are a lot a wonderful tennis pros, and I don't want to imply that they don't deserve credit. It's just that JMDP has, on multiple occasions, shown that he his a caring human being. He's just so admirable and likeable.

Since being a Fed fan the last 12 years, the only time I didn't get upset about a Federer loss in a big tournament final is the USO '09 final. JMDP...respect!

sigh. Be still my heart.

JMDP is such a wonderful man. He is so sincere. Witness his class today when Almagro retired in pain.

Class. Pure and simple.

There can only be Juan.

All jokes aside he is a very likeable person, truly a gentle giant.

Not being an attention-seeking ****** doesn't make you 'nice' by default. Nice is going out of your way for other people.

I think Goffin is very likeable. But I really think Steve Johnson is tops for me now.
Haha, nice one. Stevie is generally likable, and indeed a sympathetic figure these days, because of the loss of his dad. But just last August, he vehemently objected to the usta's consideration of Juan Martin Del Potro for a wildcard into the us open. Weeks later, Stevie had to compete against Juan in the third round in Flushing, iirc. That did not go well. Not an excellent week for little Stevie Johnson.

There are a select bunch who dislike Delpo, because of his little on court verbal antics, in the heat of battle. Personally, I'm indifferent to them.

We're talking about likability, and that threw some people off Delpo. Goffin seems to have a nice personality and never talks crap about other players. Very likeable IMO.

Not just class.

DelPo has been on the other side if this. No one can fully understand a failing body like someone whose body has failed. I'm sure that when he sees Almagro breaking down, he relives some of his own pain.

Many players have injuries but not many would do as Delpo did. Its not common to do. This is what us extroverts do, we are not shy to reach out :p

Not sure he is a true extrovert, but love the smile. I think I'd like the man, not just as a star but as a good person.

I like Murray a lot because he seems so private and so introverted. ;)

I love to watch Fed play but don't relate to him at all as a human being. I can't imagine being that confident. He just seems to lead a charmed life.

Is Murray an introvert? I dont see him as that at all. Andy is very grounded and he is intelligent. For me one of the most funny in the top ATP. Love his sense of humour. If there is any player I would like to hang around with and have dinner I would have chosen Andy and his wife. Federer too seem to have a good sense of humour and someone I would feel relaxed around.
Rafa- he is different and more sensitive which can make me uncomfortable. (even though he has ben my fav player on court)

he's had a few bad movements as well, that I'm sure detractors will point out. But to me, moments like this far outweigh the others. @Druss , agree 100 %. And with the benefit of hindsight (Delpo battling injuries ever since) even more so.

JMDP is such a wonderful man.

Wonderful turn of phrase, be still my heart, and indeed you can scoop Delpo's giant heart and empathy right off the screen... He also, in my opinion, has THE most wonderful and subtle, dry, sense of humour.

Likeable for me is too mild; loveable seems more appropriate ;)

He had me in stitches btw at a press conference when that old Italian journalist was about to ask a question: "Oh.... maama..." as he turned away with his hand over his face mockingly.
