Delayed grunting is unbearable and should be penalized

I am not a fan of grunting to begin with, but if you do it just when you are hitting the ball, and you stop it when the opponent is preparing his shot, that's fine. But all players doing something even remotely close to what Halys is doing on the point just below should be penalized for pure cheating, it blows my mind that this kind of stuff is allowed. Dude just starts grunting two seconds after he hit the ball, Sonego and Schwartzman also come to mind in this area, and unfortunately Carlitos is on the edge sometimes for me. Just take a look at this Halys's point lol. He does it a few times in this vid, and all the time at tense moments on Thiem's serves as well.

Sounds like some sore losing from OP :-D

I know it sounds like it, but tbh I have no real hopes for Thiem anymore, I am disappointed by his downfall but I am resigned now. In fact I didn't watch the match and just saw the highlights and those grunts from Halys just convinced me to make this thread about something that is bothering me more and more recently.

Nadal and Alcaraz are very irritating here. Made a thread about their grunts before.
In the last 10 years, there's been about 4,672 threads about grunting here.

It's never going to stop even if there is 105 trillion posts about it. It's hindrance, cheating, and boring af but the fan bases of anyone who grunts will defend it till their dying breath.
For my money, Djokovic screaming and grunting selectively and only on his winners is odious beyond belief. Way worse than Rafa or Carlos who grunt on every point where they're not slicing. It's a big reason I pray for baby Rune's success.... he is basically silent when striking the ball.

Far from it! Nadal does it more often and louder!
Djokovic usually grunts only if opponent shot pushes him behind position he usually takes at bl ,but grunts the most playing against grunt Overlord, like he competes with him even in grunting.

It's called roar you silly . Your senses become sharp when Djokovic blink:laughing:
I think you're praying for Rune because you see that burning desire Novak had.

Honestly I feel like grunting is one of those things thats more irritating as a spectator. When I play a heavy grunter I eventually just tune it out and it doesnt bother me as much, Im sure pros can tune it out even more then I can and hyperfocus. I do think some grunts are annoying, but I do understand the concept behind it. Many pros and high level players learn to "force" their exhale which turns into a grunt because when you are tight or nervous you hold your breath so grunting is a way to force breathing which helps you play more relaxed in matches.

When playing, I find grunting to be an issue only against pushers (ie, players who are trying to draw an error from you). These players rely on getting in your head and making you feel frustrated, so the grunting, especially if delayed can become very irritating. This is also why I’ve always felt the Novak and Rafa matchups against Roger where a bit unfair to Roger, because those two guys were invariably more defensive/pusher-like versus Roger and they had behaviors (whether intentional or not, I can’t say) like the long ball bouncing and the grunting that could be distracting enough on just a couple of points that could make a difference in a very close match.

There isn’t much precedent for players complaining about an opponents grunting and it must also be difficult for an umpire to make the call that a given grunt was a hindrance to the opponent, which is probably it is never going to be enforced.

The reality at the tour level of tennis is that you have to be able to mentally overcome gamesmanship and bush league tactics in order to be great. The delayed grunting, taking time between serves/sets/changeovers, etc etc, is one of the mountains you must overcome if you want to win grand slams. These types of things happen even more at the junior, college, and itf level. If you are a tour level player and tactics like these can break you down then you are a mentally weak player in my book.

Carballes Baena's constant grunting during his Rio matches was out of this world. Should've been deported from Brazil. Nothing happened.

Would love to hear Djokovic fans defend this one...

He's basically normally grunting or even silent all match, and then at match point, lo and behold, this happens...

A better actor than Brendan Fraser is Joker, without a doubt.

It's more difficult to judge here because on a lot of the shots he grunts when hitting the ball or immediately after, but yeah he definitely extended the grunts. I guess extented grunts and delayed grunts are different things, but both are annoying.

We also hear the biggest trick in Djokovic' grunt arsenal; the intensified grunt, in which pitch and vowel sound alters. Delay and level seasoned to taste. Served on a bed of drama.

Djokovic has always been way below standard set by Nadal & Alcaraz!

I'm surprised this was even debated!
By the end of the day it will turn he is worst grunter of them all. Common knowledge

LOL is there anything fans won’t find as excuse. Some would think their fave was poor naïveté consistently allowing them to distract him ,even cheat. If anything he could learn to deal with it like Djokovic dealt with crowd noise

No defence, grunts ocasionally ,the most playing Nadal. Sure you find some loud sound in late night empty arena, under the roof that amplifies the sound, that high octane match that ment be or not to be for Djokovic. If it went to 5th , no RG title.
Irritable to some ears , irritability is probably directly proportional with irritabiility of Djokovic winning ,sure, but worst on tour I highly doubt.
Now post some Alcaraz Nadal consistent grunt throught the match.

Now I would like to hear you defending your consistent trolling Djokovic here , just one example (won't be bothered to find the thread to quote, the other day you wrote Rune& Wawrinka completelly own Djokovic in Paris (while ofc it's 2 2 against them ). You drop the troll and ran.Oh wait you can’t!

Hi, Djoko fanatics! Look at and listen to what your beloved player is doing between 2:44 – 2:47:

This is the reason why they say never to throw stones at another when living in a glass house yourself :)

Still better than ball bouncing between the legs.

99% of the match - “uah heh” or silence. In all seriousness I don’t mind the normal Djokogrunt, it’s very metronomic and clearly a breath control thing

The 1% of big points - “aah” “AAAAAH” “AAAAAAGGGHHASKKSHSKSLFJFHJ” “uah heh” “AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH” - wins point, lol

This is the most perfect transcription I’ve seen yet of one of those distinctive grunts he has, heard it clear as a bell in my head when I read this lol

Sharapova is the GOAT grunter. She'd been over 100 decibels before, which is absolutely insane. Runner up might go Azarenka.
This is why I stopped watching womens tennis. Since Maria’s duping ban, there has been less screeching on the womens side.
