Del Po skipped the French to maximize his chances at Wimbledon. His massive serve and one of the biggest forehands in the game should be effective on grass. The last time the Argentine played Wimbledon he made it all to the semis and the match was a classic against Djokovic. He is also a Bronze medalist, in which he won on grass defeating Novak in the Bronze medal match.

Stan could face Del Po in the second round and my money is on Juan for the upset. If that occurs many doors open for Juan.

I would be surprised to see him make a deep run because with his current ranking, he's guaranteed to meet the top guys in the 1st week. Still he had decent run in the warm up grass tournaments, so I say why not? It's not like Wawrinka is having a great year, so I could see that upset happening. Actually, I would love to see Del Potro make a deep run here, boost his ranking/confidence and get back to the top of the game sooner rather than later. We miss him badly at the top.

I feel exactly the same. He is one of the nicest persons on tour on and off the court. And on the other hand it would be really great to have him back in top 10 to shake up things a bit :)

Sure enough he will get Wawa in a potential 2nd round. But if he somehow goes past him, things are going to open up for him as he'll continue in "Stan's draw" as a #4 seed.

Since coming back on Tour had Delpo won more than 10 Matches?

Despite Del Potro making the SF in 2013, historically he is not a great grasscourter.

His injury has changed his style of play. His slice is like a change up pitch in baseball. 70mph slice then a 110mph forehand. Its like greg maddox said, you dont know how fast the ball is, until you can compare it to another.

People also tend to pick on a slice, its like the rope a dope, they attack at full power while you simply rotate. Then they think they see an opening up the line, bam 110mph forehand, slice put their feet to sleep :)

Majority thinks that he don't have any chances. I guess that i will keep it quiet until hes match with Stan is over :)

I think he has a great chance to beat Stan...definitely better than beating one of the top three guys. I would love seeing him make a deep run here and climb in the rankings. But making the final or evening winning the whole thing is a long shot.

Sorry, had to vote 'no'. While it would be an incredible story and he's a great guy.... his movement eventually gets exposed on grass. And we still have to see how his wrist holds up. While a BH slice can be effective (Steve Johnson just won Nottingham) on grass he has to be able to hit over the BH too, best 3 out of 5.

Just a small "Bumpie" and a reminder that before Wimbledon started 80% didn't see him going past Wawa even. Will remain silent until SF's :)

I'm boarding the hype train. Del Potro to make it deep this Wimbledon.

When i started this thread with votes it was 20-5 in favor that he will not. Will see how many generals will appear after the battle :) My wish is to see him in SF against Murray and to beat him in that SF.

Actually, it's not the type train, it's a very realistic assumption. His toughest opponent until the SF will probably be Berdych in QF, but the rest of the players? Delpo will be a favorite in every match.

TBH I wasn't sure which section of the draw he was in. Hopefully he can stay consistent, would love to see him in the SF against Murray.

Just a small reminder. JMDP won US Open at the age of 19 in era of Nadal,Federer,Novak,Murray,Roddick etc. After more then 2 years of absence and 3 surgery's on both wrists he comes back, playing 80% of hes backhand with slice and win against No4 in the world on the surface that it's not hes best.

Without any exaggeration, without those injuries he had he would have been main rival to Novak, not Murray. Way more talented tennis player.

Yeah, the SF against Kyrgios would be great. :D

He was 20 at US Open 2009.

Without injuries, delpo would probably be more successful than murray at slams, but Murray would still be the more consistent player ..

If not that then Federer vs Sousa/Istonmin/Millman would also be nice.
Hahaha, fair enough.
If Federer reaches the final and beats Djokovic in SF, I believe he's going to win the whole thing, regardless of the opponent.

Murray would be very dangerous in the final, tbh I wouldn't call it a given against anyone watching Federer this year and seeing him on BP chances last year.

I do imagine Federer would seriously up for the final though whether he went through Djokovic or anyone else.

Damn that beer...made me bump this thread and bring all Feds fans in this conversation that has nothing to do with either Federer or Novak guys! GTFO here. This is my tribute to one of the best persona in tennis JMDP!

Well, if he beats Novak, it would mean that his level is high and an in-form Federer is a favorite in a Wimbledon final against all the players in the opposite side of the draw.
It's a bit early, though. He has to win his third round match. ;)

All roads lead to Federer.

few easy matches vs low ranked Brits and you already started to "Bel18ve" again? Lol. I would love to see Federer vs Novak in SF, just to see hes sad face again.
I never stopped believing, there's the difference. And I would also love to see the Fedovic SF.

I love Del Po and he is a such a wonderfully sweet guy. But I think the chances of him getting to a Wimbledon final are very slim, simply based on lack of match play. His fitness might also be suspect, though he looks great out there for now!

I'm a huge DelPo fan. My favorite active player. While I think his chances of making the final is slim at best, I'm going to be on cloud nine until he exits the tournament. So amazing to see him beat Stan. He looked like he was having a blast.

Nice win over Stan.
McEnroe was keen to point out many ways Delpo could have mixed it up more but he was on a winning formula as it was...

Cracking forehand, not often you see the might Waw blasted about.
BH slice is so effective on grass, it worked well.
I'm following with interest, he is a nice guy, and wish him and his wrist all the best in this tournament.

To win big tournaments again, he'll have to go back to having legit weapons. He beat an erratic Wawrinka today by out-steadying him. Played patiently, didn't make mistakes, and let Stan beat himself. That's not going to get it done against Murray and Djokovic, who play that same game at a much higher level than JDP can, and isn't likely to get it done against Fed, who will out-aggressive him much more calmly and competently most days than Wawrinka will.

Nice to see him on the comeback trail, and a good win today. But really far from vintage Del Potro, and really far from contending.

I'll never stop riding this train to either glory or doom.

Sarcasm or serious question? :)

Closer match than you expected? Fritz looked a step slow after resetting, especially going to the backhand. There was like a stutter there or something, could be the grass.

I think he got a bad draw, stans power was too much.

Fair enough, but for a guy who's been absent from the tour for almost 2 years, I think Del Potro is heading in the right direction. If they're was any member of the top 5 that he had a legitimate chance of beating, it was Wawrinka because he's a roller coaster performance wise. While I don't think Del Potro played his best ever earlier today, I think he put a solid enough performance that he can build on and perhaps surprise us all and make the QF. He served very well, forehand was good and his net game was decent. Sure his backhand isn't what it used to be, but since he came back, he's been doing a respectable job of hiding/playing around that weakness.

Biggest Novak accomplishment of 2016, beating 99 year old Fed. Bravo! That's really something to beat your chest over.
