demos in Destin

Hey all, posting here b/c it appears to be the most active forum.
Going to Destin next week, been checking out the recc. for tennis clinics in the area, note that there is not a big tennis superstore there. Hoping for an insider tip.

My 11 year old dau. is starting to enjoy tennis (HOORAY !!!!!!)
She took over my Yonex RQiS tour 2 racket and wont relinquish it.
Unfortunately it has developed a cracked frame and I'm going to have to replace it. She is tall and is begining to show good footwork. She played with the bronze colored Wilson and doesn't care for it much.

two questions:

1. since the RQiS tour2 is getting harder and harder to find, what would be your recc. for a replacement racquet?

2. Are there any pro shops in the Destin, FL area with a decent demo program so she could try out a few diff racquets?
 
We are staying in Sandestin (private rental so apparantly all kinds of problems with "privileges") I'm looking for drill clinics, etc., too. supposdly tops'l will not let you participate in clinics unless you are a guest there, but there appear to be other options elsewhere tho. Why dont we share info through this thread?
 
I was there last month.... :)

I played tennis every day at Hidden Dunes and/or Tops'l and was completely worn out....I actually needed another vacation to recover from my vacation.....and was it humid...
 
I love Sandestin; my wife and I went last year (or the year before, possibly).

What are you talking about with regards to problems with privileges? We stayed in a condo on the beach, but were still allowed a bike rental, an hour of tennis per day, and use of the trams.

Anyways, their tennis courts are nice, and there are many of them! As for demoing rackets... I have no clue. Maybe get a few from TW before you leave?

Mmmm... Sandestin... you're making me want to go back!
 
apparantly Sandestin resport has two very different sets of policies for people who rent through the resort vs. people who rent a condo or townhouse through a private owner. Of course through aprivate owner is substantially less expensive. I recall there was a lot of bad blood and even some litigation over this b/c owners who bought into Sandestin years ago were "sold" with the notion that their rentals woudl include all memeber priviliges, even for tenants/guests and then Sandestin tried to take that away to give the "company rentals" a big advantage.

Dont know how that ever worked out, tho.
 
Destin is a great place for tennis. There is a great tennis shop based in the area but I don't think we are allowed to mention it on this board. If you are looking for some partners, I'd suggest this.

Does the Sandestin Resort allow non-guests participate in drills/clinics? If not, anyone know of any other tennis clubs that may allow non-guests to do lessons/drills/clinics?
 
I dunno, I know it's gonna cost me about $28 for 2 hours. I told them I was not a resort guest and they did not seem to have a prob with it

Flea-bitten I think it ok to at least mention another place. I bought a new racquet from tw just last month, so I don't think they would scream too much. Maybe even some clues? Like a physical address?

Boy is it gonna be hot this week. My legs are already starting to cramp in anticipation!

Down here now. Paid $40 for a 1 week membership at sandestin that included 1 round robin that was $28 on it's own. So if I save 12 the rest of the week I'll have made a good deal. Trying to find some other stuff. Hidden dunes has a mwf 830 clinic I'm gonna try....$25 for a 1 hr 15 min clinic is a little pricey tho.

McClain. I'm not hard to spot. I'm 6'6". Keep an eye peeled for me and come up and introduce your bad self.

Affiliated w a resort.? In a shopping center?

I'll be there tomorrow morning at like 11 AM. I'm 6'3", so I'm not hard to spot either.

One good thing about being 6'3" is I can tell if you are 6'6". Anyone at like 5'9" would think you were 7', haha.

No, Senator John McCain won't be in Destin either, but you are getting closer, the Republican Nat Convention will be held in Tampa.

And what's with this Jake and his hight thing? 6'3' is about average in this day and age. Trying to give me, at 5'7," an inferiority complex? Maybe he should be challenging the Rochus brothers, instead of Donald Young, that would make for a more interesting pilot.

Made it into Destin at 11:00 AM today. After a few minutes, I thought I'd check out who was at the courts, especially at the closest courts at Tivoli.

Court after court after court was empty. Only saw 3-4 courts open today for some doubles. I can see why though. Heat index here today was 110 degrees. Golf course was empty, putt putt was empty. Beaches were crammed though.

I hope I can get a couple matches in on this trip. Still have had a great time. Went to Rum Runners tonight and had an awesome mahi mahi. Definitely recommended.

Tomorrow, I'm probably taking a run on the beach before the heat goes up, and I hope to get a match in too.
 
wne to the tennis center on bayside looking for you around 5 pm there is a drill session at 9 see you there? mens round robin fri morn too.....

stay cool it is hotter n h... out there.
 
Am I allowed to join in the drill at 9? I've been in four 100+ degree matches the past 12 days. I'd like to meet you at drills tonight if it's fine.
 
Bad gyp job on my end. I'm not going to make it at all. Anyway to get a morning session in tomorrow? I'd like to get a match or drills in still.
 
mens round robin was 9 to11. sorry u did not make it. where are you playing these matches? i didnt even know tivoli had courts....i always just went over to the tennis center on bayside....

there is a rounf robin (mixed tho). sat morn. u coming.? think it starts at 10 am.

youre right, it is hotter n you know where. in the rr, i played 4 sets of doubles and soaked 5 shirts completely....

Someone posted earlier that you could join the San destin tennis resort as a member for a week, is that correct?

If so, what does the membership give you? The right to play on the courts? Play mixers/round robins?

What levels are the round robins?

How are the drills?

I was so trying to make it for drills at 9, and it didn't work. I'm mad too. I go back to Atlanta tomorrow morning. Was hoping to get a match in today.

Oh well. All this does is up the date of my video blogs. Heavier training starts Monday.
 
the one week membership is $40
it includes one free round robin, which is normally $28
so, you are basically $12 in the hole after the round robin
it saves you about $5 per drills session and perhaps a little more on the rr. if you book court time, it is about $5 cheaper too.

quality of the rr is hard to gauge .... some days it is strong 3.5. some days it is barely above 3.0. kinda depends on who shows....
i was the alpha male on friday. but monday i really struggled with the heat and the tracsition to har tru.....

it was still a greawt time..... both at sandestin and hidden dunes. hidden dunes has a really good new director of tennis that picked up on a slighht problem in my back hand in less than 50 mins of drills wit 2 others in the clinic. sorrry we never connected jake...
