Denis Shapovalov - Future tennis great?

One of the most promising young talents on tour imo. Still very young and has already made a Wimbledon semi!

Do you think he’ll join the ranks of Alcaraz and Sinner as the future of the ATP tour?

Nope, he's going to be a Gasquet, Feliciano Lopez, Monfils second tier, or middle of the pack level player. Perhaps he'll be called one of the biggest underachievers.

The thing I think with Denis Shapovalov is that he's talented, no question there.

But considering the way he plays, you have to be supremely talented to win consistently like that.

Simply talented is not enough. You're going to miss way too much.

He's playing tonight in Auckland (as of this posting). I'm sure going to watch. I like watching him play.

As an aside, and I haven't seen any recent images or videos of him practicing or anything, but I think it was rumored that he's with Lululemon now and no longer with Nike. We'll see tonight, I guess...

He's more comparable to Dimitrov than to real future ATGs.

He's definitely one of the tennis players. Now the question is whether or not he can be a tennis player among the tennis players.

I would like him to have a late-career renaissance like Wawrinka but it would still be a surprise. It's a pity because with his game he should be having a Tsitsipas-like career but he'll be lucky to be another Kyrgios. Only has one title and it's a 250.

He's already achieved as much as Nick.

I am writing on this thread again. Never liked this guy, too many UE. Also should have cut hair long long ago. Also no raps. Raps and stuff showed he was not tennis great in the making. Why would I take this guy seriously after listening to him.

Unfortunately no. He never played a slam final and won far fewer titles.
We both know that the only reason Nick made that final is because of his walk-over against Nadal.

The dude would have gotten his a** kicked were it not for Rafa pulling out.

Shapovalov made the semis of Wimbledon in 2021. He was 21 or 22 at the time.

That puts him ahead of Nick who was 27 when he reached his first grand slam semi-final.

As for titles. Nick didn't really win anything bigger than an ATP 500.

I would argue that Shapo has more or less tied Nick in terms of results.

Maybe this post from mid-2022 will tell you why he hasn’t been more successful so far.

Very surprising post to say he has no weaknesses. If you watch a Shapo video with a tennis coach, they will tell you that his game is full of technique holes. I’ve never seen a pro player change his body positioning and balance so much while hitting routine ground strokes - he has no standard way of hitting FHs or BHs. That usually results in low consistency and shot tolerance which is what you see when he plays. With most other top players, you see them making changes mostly to their swing path to adjust to different hitting heights, spins etc. - with him, there seems to be no method to the madness in how he positions his body. Krygios also changes his body position a lot, but in his case it is because his footwork is lazy and he is often late to the ball - Shapo doesn’t have this excuse.

Also, his takeback is huge and makes it impossible for him to play defense on any court that is not extremely slow. I think his serve toss is not very consistent either. So, I actually find his game hard to watch because I don’t think it is very textbook. I like players with solid technique like the Big 3.

He does have fewer titles than Nick though. Yes, Nick never won anything bigger than a 500, but neither has Shapo.

Personally, I think we should give the kid a chance to develop and mature. Very few players reach their full potential at such a young age. With time, he’ll grow and his game will become more well rounded.

Are you talking about Shapovalov? He is not a kid. Kids are under 18.

I think he reached his full potential years ago. He's not a child either...

The guy is coming back from a massive and nasty injury. Why are you so judgemental. They can not all be like the Big-3 and win everything after a 6 months forced break. He'll never be number #1 but he is a former top-10, Slam semifinalist, Masters finalist. Give him some time and let's see what happens.

Just got smoked 4 and 2 by Ofner in Auckland. Shapo doesn't look like the same player of a few years ago, not at all. All the joy of tennis seems to be gone based on what I saw from him today.
'Rapping' his fall, Shapovalov is done.

Like big 3?

He isn't even like Dimitrov.

Nick's won 7 career titles and is a slam finalist. Shapo has won one title and has reached the QF's of two slams.
A semi at Wimb too to be fair. But if Novak had withdrawn Shapo could've been in the final just like Nick.

But Nick did win a couple of 500's beating some very good or great players like Acapulco and Washington, both in 2019.

Given how he plays and can't find consistency, that sounds about right. I wouldn't even call it underachieving. That level of career is still amazing, but we naturally tend to judge everything by the upper top players/careers.
