Denis Shapovalov gives umpire black eye

Denis Shapovalov has just given the umpire a black eye during the Davis cup tie between Canada and GB. He had just been broken by Edmund, and in frustration smacked the ball into the stands... except it didn't get that far. It hit the umpire clean in the eye. He was disqualified.

Such a shame, it wasn't intentional at all, but he has to learn from this. He has a huge amount of potential, he must learn from this.

I feel sorry for Denis, it was a genuine accident. I hope the umpire doesn't have any permanent damage, it was a very hard hit.

He got broken, and pulled the extra ball out of his pocket and tried to hit it really hard, but it went sideways instead of high into the crowd. It was an accident, but I'm sure he'll be suspended. The ITF can't sanction this type of thing. The ITF/ATP should have banned rage-hitting the ball years ago, but they didn't. It was Brian Earley who made the call to default the match.

Say the ball hits the umpire square in the temple, and gives him brain damage or seriously injures him.
What happens? Does Shapovalov face any criminal proceedings.

I believe that would fall under Criminal Negligence (causing bodily harm). He could be charged, but not necessarily convicted depending on the judge.

Just saw this happen live watching on TV. Harsh way to learn a lesson for the young Shapovalov. Obviously didn't mean it, but nothing excuses what he did.

Same reaction, DQ, but a bigger fine. Also the kid is only 17, he has the benefit of not knowing any better.
Sorry but I've never heard of a near-juniors tennis player doing something so reckless on a tennis court before. Sure Nalby kicked the living daylights out of an old guy, but he was 30 at the time.

I see and talk to his coach once a week at my indoor club. ill relay all these messages to remind him,of all the patience and persistence that goes into a so called prodigy tennis player.
lots of growing up to do in so many faucets of his game,We've all been there.
And Johnny Mac's face watching this would be priceless,
If only eh JMac

Wow. Awful.

Also, it was the deciding rubber for GBR v Canada and the default handed a 3-2 win to GBR. So because of this, Shapo lost it for Canada.

Well, I am not worried....he wasn't going to come back and win that match anyway.....

Better because you can set it to 1/4 speed.

He really NAILED the ump!

This is going to follow him for the rest of his career. Terribly unlucky, but he could have injured someone worse.

Shows that it's not "just a harmless tennis ball" when it's hit that hard.

By the way, this should highlight how lucky Novak has been, and he's not the only one...
