Denis Shapovalov gives umpire black eye

Totally aside from the sanctioning he will receive from ATP / ITF / Grand slam committees, has anyone heard any scuttlebutt from the Russian TF, and what move (if any) they plan to make?

Really? Did you read the article? Any society that allows this sort of barbarism to go on, has got serious problems. This just feels like political bait however.
They've got a country with 1.5 billion people. Of course there will be people like this. Acting like everyone in the country behaves this way or even condones this type of behavior is idiotic at best. Whenever something like this happens the citizenry is outraged (see this)

A blunt eye trauma can cause hyphema (https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/what-is-hyphema), which is considered a medical emergency. If not treated properly or quickly enough, it can cause permanent vision problems.
The ball's speed in doubles and in this particular situation isn't really comparable, is it?

Has the ball never been hit hard in doubles? Players routinely hit the ball hard straight at each other when I watch...

Well, when nothing happens to these perpetrators, and obviously when there is no value to a person's life, then you have a serious problem. Just because there is 1.5 billion people doesn't mean that if I accidentally hit someone with a rock, then I go over and bash their head in. Or if I accidentally hit someone with my car, I don't make sure they are dead by running over them again and again. I'm still amazed that this is not considered wrong or barbaric. And I'm still amazed that I'm viewed as weird for saying thank God I'm in America and don't live there. Regardless of politics and all the baloney going on right now, I'm still glad that I live in America. Why would I want to go live in China or anywhere else. Why is it wrong to want to live here? Why should I be embarrassed to live here?! If I had grown up somewhere else and was used to that country, whether its Spain, or Croatia, or Germany, or wherever, and say that I'm thankful to live there, then why would it be wrong to want to live there. I'm going to be proud of that country and let everyone know that I'm glad to live there. What is wrong with that?

That's where you are wrong. If you read the reactions from Chinese citizens on the link I posted, you'd see they absolutely consider it wrong and barbaric. They ain't got a democracy there. What else do you expect them to do? Form a lynch mob and go after the perpetrators?

I don't know how you got the impression that I'm referencing the baloney going on right now. I am saying it's unfortunate that we have people with such uniformed and racist thinking in this country.

What do you mean by racist? Yellow on Brown, Brown on Black, Brown on White, Black on White, White on Black, Red on Yellow, Brown on Red, Black on Red, Red on White? Jew on Gentile? Gentiles on Jews? Maybe you mean religion - Snake Handlers on Satanists, 7th Day Adventists on Orthodox Jews, Native American religions on Mormons, Catholics on Muslims, Druids on Wiccan, Hindu on Krishna, Buddha on Catholics?

I'm just trying to narrow it down.

When you call an entire country "completely wrecked, barbaric, and third world animalistic society" based on what a few people do... That's racist.

Though I'm sure there are idiots in China who look at American mass murderers and spout similar bulls**t on their forums

So you're saying - White on Yellow? And you're saying that if I condemn an action allowed in a society then I'm racist?

You know that running over and over someone is wrong? You know that's wrong don't you?

You would have a point if the action were allowed or even condoned in said society... Which is not the case here

It's against the law in China to run people over, and the Chinese are outraged that there are drivers who do that

At the risk of invoking whataboutism, in this country we have mass shootings every other week and there is a sizable chunk of the populace think it's okay to do nothing about it. Does that say we are a "wrecked, barbaric, and animalistic" society?

You threw me off when you said you would be embarrassed to say your American, and then you said "uninformed and racist".

I may be off, fair enough, but tell me again why I'm racist and why you're embarrassed to say your American.

You called an entire country "wrecked, barbaric, and animalistic" based on what a few people in that country do; and you're seriously asking me this question?

Yes, the ball has been hit hard in doubles and this was the result on one occasion: http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2016...ina-hingis-over-head-shot-rio-olympics/59953/
But my point was Shapovalov's "shot" was probably worse than that in terms of speed. If that comparatively weaker shot was strong enough to broke a bone, let's just imagine what a more powerful shot can cause. And that was my other point. Under certain circumstances (speed, angle...), this kind of shot can indeed be very dangerous and threaten your vision.

How much was Harry fined ?
The amount is undisclosed, unless Ryan himself reveals it...I'd guess between $250 to $500...players at T-Bar M (the host of the Dallas Challenger) are all somehow tempted to lodge a ball in the insulation of the ceiling...some childish mark of pride.

I feel for the umpire, and Shapovalov absolutely needs to get suspended. I had a friend get hit squarely in the eye but with less velocity and he experienced severe eye trauma. It happened 4 years ago and he still has blurry vision, lots of light flashes and floaters, ( little black spots which will never go away). He tells me that since this accident, he is at a much higher risk of retinal detachment. Intentional or not, professional players must be held responsible for such stupidity.

...Presumably it is not discussed much out of respect to both the official's family and Edberg, who it must have been tough for, too...

What ?! Out of respect ? Let me introduce you to the internet where the POTUS is a twitter troll. And people make a living trying to upset other people into clicking links and by making up "alternative facts."

I think it's not discussed much because it was a while back, there isn't much to say about it and it doesn't naturally come up. If Denis S. can take anything from it it is Edberg went on to have an illustrious career and was the epitome of class.

Also it's FAKE NEWS. From a dishonest press and you know why they lie. I don't but you do.

Deadeye Denis. Denis Grand Slam (pronounced Denny's Grand Slam). Sharpshooting Shapovalov. Left-eye Denis.

The Umpire ended up with a fractured eye socket and had to have surgery.

12 Feb 2017

The ITF has issued a statement regarding chair umpire Arnaud Gabas after he underwent surgery in France

Chair umpire Arnaud Gabas has undergone successful surgery in France to repair a fracture of the orbital bone under his left eye.

The fracture was detected when doctors performed X-rays upon Mr Gabas’s return from Ottawa, where he was unintentionally hit by a ball during the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group tie between Canada and Great Britain on 5 February.

Mr Gabas is now back at his home and is in good spirits. His doctors have recommended that he undertake a period of rest and recovery.

Mr Gabas said: "I would like to thank my doctors for their excellent support. The surgery was successful and I am now concentrating on rest and rehabilitation so I can be back on court in the near future. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude for all the messages of support I have received from around the world.’’

Mr Gabas requests privacy and will not be giving further statements at this time.

However serious we may think of it as, do remember the kid's 17. So, even if it were charged in court, it'll be as a minor anyway.

I'm all for full-out punishment as far as all these 'rage-tantrums-outbursts' go, especially since his action led to another person getting hurt. Completely a different zone compared to just racquet abuse which does nothing to no one.

He's playing a senior event. He should be treated like one.

Yes he played in a senior event but no, that does not make him an adult in the eyes of the law... But then again, I meant full blown charges in court regardless if ATP did anything. The umpire/spectator who was hit could charge him for damages. The plaintiff just had to proof the 'foul ball' was not necessary, the ball at hand isn't even the playing ball but one that was hand picked and used for rage hitting, and caused bodily harm which could have BEEN CLEARLY avoided/uninitiated.

I mean, imagine if a person was watching any sporting event, and someone (whether player or not) did something out of rage and whatever they threw/raged at ricochet and hit this victim, what is his available course of action? Especially if there WERE measurable(calculated) damages

I think he's lucky on 2 accounts:

1. 17
2. It hit an ATP official(someone within ATP's Jurisdiction). Imagine if it were someone else. Like a 10 year old kid in the stands... Or someone frail.

However, we all feel relieved that at least THAT did not happen.

That's how you measure with a radar gun, yes, but given that this seemingly was based on distance over time, it is presumably the average speed over the flight.
I made my own calculations... It came out as 87 mph off the racquet and 72mph when it hit him

Great. If anyone can tell me about how much bone deforms on impact with a blunt force so I can calculate how much force the umpire resisted with his eye socket

If we just look at the kinetic energy, a 57g object traveling at 75-85 mph only has about 30 to 40 Joules of energy

It's significantly less energy than a punch (a couple of hundred Joules), and a tennis ball is much softer than a clenched fist

Just read the umpire has needed some surgery.

The way he hit the ball with such power - he must surely have known there was potential to injure someone.

The ATP Tour should now put in place a new rule - you hit the ball in anger in to the crowd with such serious power,an automatic 3 month or so ban is automatic.

Shapovalov should not be allowed to return till the umpire has fully recovered.

I respect his genuine concern for the umpire, but his action in hitting that ball with such a dangerous amount of speed is a disgrace and warrants a long term suspension from the game.
