Maybe should legalise raquet smashes and swearing and come down harder on this sort of stuff. It happens all the time most of the time nobody is hit or injured.

Lets be honest though, a tennis ball is not a lethal weapon, this is about the worst thing plausibly occur in such an instance. You could pelt the ball at your opponent's eye during a rally and you would be breaking no rules other than a bit of ettiquette.

That being said he was obviously being an idiot but I doubt he'll be hitting many balls in anger going forward. A good old fashioned swear or racquet smash will probably be his new method.

Seriously, if I could fracture somebodies face and only pay like a months salary i'd it a lot more often

I highly doubt it's one month salary. The guy's about 300 in the world. He is probably not even covering his expenses yet. Eventually he will sure but it was a stupid accident, the guy's a kid. People make mistakes, no point crucifying the guy for something that loads of other players have done, only this time it has happened to injure someone.

He made a mistake, he was remourceful and will learn from it I'm sure.

He just got a WC in Marseille, 1st round prize money is $7,000. Not to mention he'll be making a ****load more if his ranking improves this year.

Just read the umpire has needed some surgery.

The way he hit the ball with such power - he must surely have known there was potential to injure someone.

The ATP Tour should now put in place a new rule - you hit the ball in anger in to the crowd with such serious power,an automatic 3 month or so ban is automatic.

Shapovalov should not be allowed to return till the umpire has fully recovered.

I respect his genuine concern for the umpire, but his action in hitting that ball with such a dangerous amount of speed is a disgrace and warrants a long term suspension from the game.
Where’d he go?
Where is Shapo?
My eye.
Where is that chicken?
Where’s that blanking coward?
He’s yellow.
Shapo’s yellow
He’s yellow
Shapo come back here!
You YELLOW PIG!
PIG!
PIG!
