Dent on fast hitters

Just watching the Delpo vs Lopez, and after Delpo ripped an insane forehand winner they were talking about players that hit the ball that hard.

First thing Taylor Dent said was that Federer and Nadal both can hit that hard, and that between Fed Nadal and Delpo you're just splitting hairs.

A minute later he added that Berdych and Tsonga also sometimes hit like that.

I wouldn't have thought to even consider Federer and Nadal among the hardest hitters on the tour at all, since they rarely ever do, and even then it doesn't seem nearly as fast as some rippers that these other guys hit.

Maybe they can once in a while, but not with the same sort of regularity. I think maybe it was at Wimbledon 2010 when Berdych knocked Federer out of Wimbledon, and that coupled with Soderling knocking him out of Roland Garros a couple of weeks earlier lead some journalist to ask Roger in the press conference if anybody hit it as hard as these 2 guys, and he said something like "yeah, Del Potro. You forgot about him because he's been out a while". I'd take the word of someone who plays them week in and week over that of Taylor Dent (who I love, don't get me wrong). Del Potro hits it harder than anyone. You can hear that if nothing else.

If you saw the exos that Federer played in South America at the end of last year, he ripped some forehands that were significantly harder than he usually does in regular matches. So he can definitely do it, it's just that he rarely does.

Are you kidding?!!! Did you not see Federer during his prime? He was the "most consistently" hardest hitting individual on the tour. Between 04-06 Federer's stroke-making was unmatched in it's weight-of-shot, speed and penetration, until it began to decline in 2007.

Watch Nadal in practice, he hits harder than anyone. The guys he practices with can't even keep up with him during practice. But he hits a lot more balls out.

They are out there playing a game. It's not a "who hits hardest" contest. That's typically why the "hard hitters" lose. They can't keep the ball in player longer.

Best mover all time! Biggest hitter ever! Smartest player ever!

Safin, Berdych, Gonzalez, Verdasco, Johansson....those guys were big hitters too back in 04...remember them?

^I do indeed recall their bang-bang-error-error-error-bang-bang infused games and in terms of pure shot-making consistency prime Federer blew them out of the water.

Also:

Yes!

Unless you apply TW-blockhead-logic which equates "movement" to "foot-speed" alone.

Biggest hitter ever!

Yes - arguably! Though I prefer to use the term "shot-maker" unless you're connoting "biggest" to "fastest" in which case prime Federer would still be in contention.

Smartest player ever!

LOL! No -- his thick-headedness and numbskullness has been rather apparent at times. Although if by "smartest" you mean "most talented" then DEFINITELY -- YES! YES! YES! :D

I see what you all mean. I understand that just about any pro CAN smack the ball around, but most don't. And for those that do, I just don't feel like Nadal and Federer would be at the top of that list. Just me I guess

Interesting that all top players are mentioned in one way or another in OP post except Djokovic.

More proof of underestimating and undermining the current #1 and the best player last 2-3 years.

Why?

Ok, just checking. I won't bother you anymore.

He's an amazing player, no doubt about that, but this is about who hits really hard. The only shot that I've seen Djokovic hit insanely hard is that darn FH he hit MP down against Fed at USO '11. That shot still haunts me today.

I disagree.

When Djokovic goes for broke with the FH, he goes for broke big time. It's like he turns into another player.

One match that comes to mind is his '08 Olympics defeat against Nadal, he went down but not without some major blasting.

The end of the 4th set in the '13 RG Nadal-Djokovic match is another good example.

It mostly comes out against Nadal because he's pretty much the only player who forces him to be so agressive.

Honorable mention to Blake, BTW

Yes I agree. That was my point too. Djokovic can hit as hard as anyone mentioned, but still OP and article missed to mention him even though he is current #1. Why so much disrespect?

sorry man but this is pure BS, do you realize what you are writting

how about Tipsarevic can hit as hard as anyone.

saying Djokovic is not the hardest hitter on the tour doesn't mean he's not a great champion bla bla... ;)

No one mentioned Tipsy. For the rest, refer to post before mine and to link with that forehand vs Tsonga or USO 2010 saved match points, for example.
