Not a Rafa fan, but feel bad. This is 10x what Fed faced with Rafa.
true that. at least there was some equanimatiy of surface i.e. fed had success on hard and grass, rafa on clay. sometimes they got a win on the other's best.

but this here. fast, slow hc, clay, fast clay, grass.

same result.

I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Rafa took his foot off the gas on that last set cause of the Novak injury. Maybe he didn't want to win it that way?

i wish i can agree but, rafa gave his best on the third and he got tired so he doesn't have anything left on the fourth.

It's not like he hasn't beat injured opponents before

That's the whole reason for a fake MTO. Jonny Mac said it himself. "You don't want to go for too much on your shots or you'll make UE's. And you can't bear the thought of losing to an injured player." Plus, you think it's gonna be in the bag, then he starts playing good. It's pretty much hustling. That whole 4th set was push fest by both players. I guess Novak is a better pusher....

please. rafa has steamrolled guys who show the slightest physical or mental weakness.

he just plain wore out his own self.

I wouldn't flame you for it, but it looks poor for Rafa, or anyone, when something like that happens.

I don't get how he didn't play more aggressive in the last set...but 4 hours into a match you don't think right. The tempo dropped and he didn't take advantage.

I think Nadal has a lot to be disappointed with in that match, and it is his own fault. :(

Fake MTO? C'mon...

Why be depressed. Why can't you appreciate that we have a superior tennis player finally in the name of Djokovic. He will catch up real soon to Nadal in terms of total slam titles won, and then probably Federer.

Yeah at least in 2008 W and 2009 AO Fed went down in 5 sets but it was still very painful. Not to mention all those loses at FO over the years. I say Nadal and his fans deserve to feel how Fed and his fans felt.

The tempo dropped because Nole took a medical time out, which could have broke Nadal's momentum or caused Nadal to stiffen up in the quads!

Then Nole comes out and plays even harder off the ground and moving great, the only thing seemingly affected was Nole's serve...

Thats why its better not to take MTO, especially before your opponent's serve, unless absolutely necessary regardless of what the rules allow!

That way theres far fewer conspiracy theories!

It's called payback. How many times has Rafa MTO'd an opponent for the win??

I don't mean to derail the thread, but c'mon, feeling bad for Rafa because Novak took a MTO is the epitome of hypocrisy.

Rafa was gassed in the fourth, plain and simple. The guy was pushing 90mph first serves back into court.

OK, I do not get a dime to play, but I am sorry for Rafa. Great effort. We need to recognize Nole current superiority, period.

and 90 mph serves instead of 120?
90 mph first serves instead of 120, yeah, he was faking

Nole got lucky Nadal is such a passive returner, imagine he has facing Murray, rolling in those first serves.

All he had to do was step in and spank a couple of those back, even if it meant missing some, anything to let Novak know that he wasn't gonna get away with rolling the serve in.

Nadal had lots of chances, he was not agressive enough. Too bad, but he certainly is much sexier than Djokovic....he should just concentrate on modeling.

That's not TRUE. Pay attention after the 3rd set when he won. He was very fired up, strong belief that he can comeback. If anyone who look deflated is Nole(although I think it was a disguise), but nontheless, Nadal was motivated, and seeing Nole getting treatment gave him more confident in coming back. Anyone who watch Nadal knows the guy never quit, and has comeback from behing so many times.

I'll accept the part where Nadal was deflated after he got broke TWICE in the fourth set, and the will to fight was diminished.

fine with me....eheheheheh.
Common, guys, he was exausted, and probably his head clouded b/c of precedents.....so he must have thought: "I just want to go home"..........
