Determining the Grip Size of a Frame

I picked up a Wilson Pro Staff Classic 6.1 si today and when I took the Tournagrip off there was a bare handle. There is a "5" stamped in the handle, but the grip size stickers are gone. With two layers of Gamma Supreme OG it seems to be around 4 5/8. Any guesses as to what I'll have after I put a new grip on. The version I have came with a Cushion-Aire grip, which is what I will use.

If there's a 5 on it, I would guess its a grip size 5. Don't forget, the cushion grips do compress over time, so a brand new grip would probably bring it up to a 5.

It feels like 4 5/8. Now how do I figure out whether it's an L or not? I want to get an identical (or close) match for it.

Hi Baxter,

L1 = 4 1/8"
L2 = 4 2/8 = 4 1/4"
L3 = 4 3/8"
L4 = 4 4/8 = 4 1/2"
L5 = 4 5/8"

The grip size (of your frame) is the circumference of the pallet in the increments of 1/8 of an inch you see above. If the indicating digits have worn off and you want to measure it ... just remove your grip and wind a section of string around the bare pallet. Mark where the two ends meet. Unravel and measure the length.

The next completely separate issue is the thickness of your synthetic or leather grip. I have a thread started where we have collected the specs (mass & thickness) for well over one hundred grips and over grips. You can find that information here : http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=465717

Hope that helps!

Is the grip size the circumference of the bare handle or of the handle/grip combo? With 2 Gamma OG it feels and measures 4 5/8+. A Wilson Leather is on the way. I will check the grip spec thread, thanks for the link.

I guess I can weigh it to determine if it's L,M or H.

The grip size is just the bare pallet (handle). The thickness of the leather or synthetic grip you wrap the pallet with, is a completely separate issue.

No problem, happy to assist.

ALL grips are "L"s.... L1, L2, L3, ect.

There is no "M" or 'H", and there is nothing to weigh. Perhaps you are thinking L, M, H means light, medium, heavy? We used to have this distinction for some brand/models of wood racquets way back in the day. Some wood frames were available in a wide range of stiff-flexible, and light-med-heavy, but that was 30 years ago.

The "L" just means it's the European system for measurement, which is related to the North American system which is expressed in 1/8 of an inch. I've posted the equivalents for you above. As Robbo has already pointed out, you have a number 5 stamped into your pallet, this probably means you have size L5, which is the same thing as 4 5/8". ... as in four inches and Five Eighths. L2 is Two Eighths. L3 is Three Eighths. L4 is four eighths or 1/2.
