#Diamond Gen

Grampa

Semi-Pro
6 players born in the 90s have lost in the first fricken round at Wimbledon: Baby Fed, Shapovalov, Thiem, Zverev, Tsitsipas, the last three being in the top 10. Is there no end to this tomfoolery? @Meles will of course provide stats showing how Thiem would have bageled Pete on grass but today's gen is the toughest ever. We haven't seen a great tennis player since Juan Martin del Potro and the wait only seems to be getting longer. At this rate Murray with a bionic hip could have reached the second week had he chosen to enter the singles draw.

Would appreciate trolling and input, emphasis on the former.
Edit- Tiafoe has joined them in peace and harmony.

The "hyped" players in this next (next, next) gen are pretty bad. Zverev has been as high as 3 in the world, and can barely win matches at Majors. You're correct that the last truly great young talent was DelPo and that was 2009. It's been 10 years since the ATP has seen a young player able to step up and consistently take the mantle from the older generation of greats, and DelPo's potential was almost immediately cut short by injuries.

I just get sad thinking about professional tennis with zero variety going forward. Djokovic and even Nadal have (stupidly) been labeled as grinder/baseliner types, but they both have good transition games, can finish points at net, showcase excellent feel at times, etc. Thinking that the next best thing rankings wise are guys like Zverev, Theim, Tsitsipas, etc. is a bummer.

Johnny Mac could make it to the second round if he went out there today

It is an embarassing group of players in generation useless and generation just as useless as generation useless.

The captain of generation useless being a person that represents Canada but ran away from Canada because Canada is not great: Milos Raonic. The captain of generation just as useless as generation useless being a person that represents Canada but ran away from Canada because Canada is not great: Denis Shapovalov.

It is sad. I said this before and I'll say it again. Do not let them use their cell phones, their laptops for 6 months. No social media, no nothing ... then we'll talk. Lock them up somewhere ;)

Dimitrov losing in the early rounds is pretty much expected now. Zverev has never been that good in slams. Could give Thiem a pass since this isn't really his surface and he lost to a good enough grass player (Querry). I doubt that the younger generation would be less successful than the Raonic, Nishikori, Dimitrov generation. It would be amazing if that was the case.

90s is a 10 years period. Those born at the beginning of 90s are closer to Djokovic who was born at the end of 80s than to Tsitsipas. Anyhow, tennis lacks young, strong and consistent players. No future ATGs in sight. In fact, golden age of tennis was trivalry Roger-Rafa-Novak and their battles. Very, very hard to repeat. All other players and their rivals will be compared to this era to death. Just wait few years after these retire.

None of these players have shown much potential on grass (Tsits a little, but return game worse than Shapo:sick:). Anyone following the grass season had little in the way of expectations.

Including Dimitrough with this group is quite fraudulent.;)

Here at the Musuem slam, NewGen was something like 8-4 the first day plus two all NewGen matches. And at least 10 of 32 players left in top half now NewGen.

Let's check today (youngerer bolded):
Clarke (20 years old) over Rubin
Federer wins over Harris (22), but Harris takes first set
Barrere over Bublik (25 over 22)
Berrittini over Bedene
Isner over Ruud
Fritz
crushes Bendych
De Minaur over Cecchinato
Norrie over Istomin
Nishikori over Monteiro
Kygrios
over Thompson
Berankis over Shapo
Sousa over Jubb
Fognini
over Tiafoe
Djere over Andreozzi
Rublev over Garin

Thiem is not Diamond Gen, just a part of Diamond Age like Big 3. So in bottom half that is 19 of 32 players on the youngerer side. 10 of 32 players left in bottom half NewGen. That is 20 of 64 slots at the event.

FAA is the only core player left of the Diamond Age (Tsits, Zedrot, and Shapo now out). Hardly surprising since he was the only one in strong form.

Let's wait for WTF where it may roll out that it is Thiem, The Big 3, along with Tsits, Khach, Med, FAA, Coric, and/or Zverev rounding out the top 10. @nn Diamond Age unfolding better than predicted if WTF is 100% made of these players.

Fogning is 32.

so no we've got Tsitsipas, Zverev, Shapo, Thiem, Tiafoe, Fritz, Rublev all out within one or two rounds. De Minaur about to join them probably.

Who's left of note – Medvedev and FAA? Geez. Shambles.

de Minaur as well joine the "who will go first home" competition.

Medvedev is good vs his peers, but do you think he can pose a threat to Nadal or Djokovic at their own game?

would not expect it. Then again, hasn't he had a couple of decent showings versus Noel?

How far do you see him going?

difficult to say, when he is on, he can out-grind anyone bar Djokovic and Nadal.
But he is not always "on", and there can be many reasons.

Yes, indeed, he had some good matches vs Novak, but Novak and Nadal are simply too good at keeping the ball in play 50 shots / rally multiple time per game.
Medvedev only recently started to take tennis / fitness seriously, while people say Novak and Nadal were serious from early on.
