Diary of a Racketaholic

Gorgeous morning in Los Angeles. Played from 10:30-noon and by the time we ended it was 81 and sunny. Was off my demo train and back on the Blade (with Rad MP as backup in the bag, never took it out) and without the struggle of trying to learn a new racket I just played my game and had the most fun I’ve had in weeks. Hit one inside out forehand that lasered so fast into the corner I wish I’d been filming it so I can see what I did and try to repeat the mechanics.

We had a Dunlop rep at our park last month handing out demos left and right (and selling sticks fairly cheap, like in the $150 range) so I tried out a SX300 Tour and didn’t like it at all. Everyone else who grabbed a demo put it down pretty soon too and we all went back to our main sticks. Not sure why but it just didn’t click.
That’s the new ones. Those are more like 2019 PAs. Good I guess but not what I’m after

The newer yellow one? The guys here are talking about the prior version which is a lot different.
Nah, it’s the black ones with yellow from 2019. SX300 Tours. It’s not a spec most would like as they come in 298-304 unstrung SW. but I love them. Those guys can talk about them but if they buy one , steal it, then sell it to me. (I’ve hoarded 4 so really don’t need any more)

2@27.25, 345 static, 31.8 and 31.7 balance, 338 and 340 SW, 14.3 TW. Didn’t do anything to the heads, just tailweighted. My 3rd I left at 27 but will probs make it 27.25 depending on my last new one that shows up Tuesday. I’ll check the spec of that last one before mods. Def prefer the 27.25’s but that’s my thing.

Sounds great. Love the specs.

Yeah it was a hit with my teammates. 2 of them used them for a few years.

PM me if you want to hit with the C10 Pro (assuming you're in the US). You can restring it with whatever you want. Right now it has slightly used Cyclone in it. My only ask is hit with it all you want but try not to scrape, etc. the ground with it. I offered to let @SupahMan5000 borrow the Regna but he said he has to scrape the ground so it was a no go.

Are you able to check SW and TW measurements to compare them against mine?
Im also a big ground scraper. My frames start looking a little worn fast if I use them for match play, but that’s okay for me. Battle scars don’t affect performance.

Alright fellas, I got a match in 9 hours, and my wrist hurts but only when I rotate it to hit a forehand. Everything else feels fine so I think I'm going to try and tough it out and play... Even though my only weapon is my forehand.

Any pain remedies? My only plan was to take a couple oxys before the match. Though the last time I did that I lost 1 and 0 and had basically no energy the whole match... but mostly I put that down to the guy being pretty good.

Do you have these at your place?
I have knee pain, but will take two before the match as well..

If your plan is to take oxycodone before tennis, please don't play. If you need narcotics to help with pain, that's too much to "play through"

My most recent purchase 2 2019 SX300 Tours are gonna take a while to get here ugh. Luckily, I don’t need to call a friend or anything. Have plenty to holic with including my adjusted 27.25 ZUS which I need to string up.

Some oxys washed down with a stiff drink sounds like a good time. And that's what tennis is all about.

Can someone enlighten me about Blade Pro 18x20 alternative (close feel, balance, and plow, or maybe the specific characteristics) for "end session/match"? I can play with BP 18 (and really like the laser precision+heavy balls) until 2.5 hour-mark, then I start to get errors because of late footwork/slower RHS. I have full swing FH and OHBH and cannot stand lower SW (sprayed a lot with Regna 100 and stock VC95, especially for on the rise shots). Modded BP18 with double OG (wrist pain with leather), 5 g in butt cap, and 4 g at the top of the handle. Considering to put out the weight in butt cap next session.

Have demoed/played with PA98 (nothing interesting for me and need spin to control), Blade 100 (great feel but cannot paint the lines), RF97 (jarring vibration), older Radical Pro (nice connected feel, but didn't really gel with it), Speed Pro Auxetic (no really satisfying shot, jack of all trades), Prince ATS98 (my 2nd racket but after playing with BP18 feel so hollow), Ezone 98 (nice whip and ball shape, but doesn't like to swing that hard because I feel like I'm losing control), and Ezone Tour 2022 (my main racket before BP, crazy serve and plow but erratic stringbed).

I am torn between BP 16 (for lower SW but afraid getting to launchy for my game) and waiting for Solinco WO XTD 18x20 (read in this forum that it is similar to BP18 but much more playable in tight matches). I consider Ezone 98+ also but same fear as BP 16.

I would say the Solinco, but you might want the 27” 18x20 vs the XTD. If you like XLs, then the XTD is stellar…. But it’s still a 27.5 and there are compromises to that length.

Mine are 27.25 and I much prefer them to the 27.5. If you love the blade, I’m thinking the 27 is what you want.

Is it still a racket similar to BP 18? I mean maybe it needs lead at the hoop. Because the length is what makes XTD have better plow like BP, isn't it?

I've noticed that I still play my best tennis with the Pure Aero 2016 or Aeropro Drive Gt 2010. Which racquet should I try with a bit more control and still have that Aero throat shape? Babolat Pure Aero 98? Some Yonex ezone? What do you think?

Yeah it needs lead, for both SW and stability. The BP is a rock of stability, so you’ll probs want lead at 3/9 and 12 on the white outs. I do anyway. After tweaking and understanding my twistweight and swingweight goals, I have 12” of lead on my white outs at 10/2. But I may adjust back to 3/9 & 12 at some point.

Man, still in the tennis center.
I started well, got broken once in the first and lost it 4:6. In the second I found my rhythm and my BH down the line much better, and I played some incredible volleys. I went down a break in the second to 4:5. But I found my rhythm much better, had break points in almost every of his service games by then. I was feeling it, man, and I thought, this can't be over now.
I broke him, made all the returns. 7:5, took it to the CT.
I was up 4:2 in the CT, when I started getting cramps in my legs and in my hand!!! I couldn't hold the racquet anymore. The opponent's team brought a referee, who was a real @$$. He said, I had two minutes to recover, from cramps! Like for real???
I lost it in the breaker 8:10. Man, I am sad as fu€€!!

That sucks. I got hand cramps as well one match. So wierd, I couldn't hold the racquet and I was serving. Managed to massage it out between points, but its the worst feeling when your hand is all locked up. Cramps suck in general.

An Angell TC97 would be similar to the BP, but probably wouldn't help the late fatigue issue. Granted you could get one at 305g or less and it will still be foam filled with around a 295SW unstrung etc so maybe that as an option.

But losing mass-based power can make you tired in other ways.

I have the same issue as you, where 2.5hours is where I start to fall off a cliff. The only things that help are trying to focus on the fundamentals- watching the ball, footwork (what's left of it), and playing aggressivley to big safe targets.

One last thought would be to have one of your BPs with a more powerful string setup, and switch to that late in the session so you can still have juice and putaway power, and defense when you need it.

You probably should try a racket with a less head heavy balance but similar swing weight. I prefer the Babolat Origin over the Blade Pro, and the Origin has a much heavier swing weight.

But Im currently using a leaded up Head PC2.0. SW of 340, but still plenty whippy thanks to the head light balance.

Like Carlitos in that Rg match against Novak, so unfortunate.

Sorry to hear that. Try to focus on the positives at this point (if you can)... and maybe that it's just a tennis match (but I know how badly it can cut and it sucks). Cramps suck. You probably got over-psyched for the match (like Alcaraz in RG against Djokovic), and it affected your performance. Sucks!

It is actually crazy, because I thought, I'd be on the court for no more than 50 minutes as this guy was 1400 in the world at one point. But then, this happened.
Edit: the BH down the line was really important because my opponent was a lefty.

Took 3 of 4 sets in dubs this morning. Played above average but lost focus for a some time and got broken twice. Also need to focus on moving my feet more and resorting to junk balling less. Wielded the UT/UP but should have restrung one of my cx 200 tour 18x20 to keep experimenting.

BP16 was very good for me, but then I've switched to Shift 300 Prolabs (with about 6g at 12 and OG, dampener)- amazing blend of spin and power (less powerful than BP 16 though). Recently I'm alternating with the TGT 293.1 XL 27.25", same static weight (334g) but more SW and tad less manouvrable. More powerful though and very controlled.

Valiant effort though! Alcaraz got cramps against Joker when the first set dragged, last year, no?

I have no racquets update (sticking to the ...shift 300 and the same weight FCs from Richard), but I can't help posting these here:

Canada won today the Fed cup final for the first time, with an 18 year old Serbian that went 3/4 and Leylah Fernandez that went 5/5 (including doubles win against Cheia after singles win against the Wimbledon champion). No Bianca.

Minor FYI:

I've been practicing my serve (outdoors at 3-7C aka 37-44F), by slowing down the tossing motion as much as possible.
I start bent forward, then slowly rock back, bring my foot together and toss: more consistent toss and more power.

I got up super early on little sleep and hit the courts mid morning for doubles with my teammates. Was warming up a bit slow, but the serve was humming so we took the 1str set in a tie breaker. I think that really got my blood flowing because my movement was so much better in the second set and I dominated 6-1. My friend said that I was blasting them off the court with my groundstrokes and I was the dominant player. Got a lot of compliments for my volleying and now they want to split me so I play every week either singles or doubles with no weeks off. Works for me.

I'd say the Gravity Pro gets the credit here, but the reality is that I have been practicing a lot. Videoing, seeing what I need to fix. Fixing it and then drilling it in so I can do it in matches without thinking. Been doing this 3-4x a week for the past 6 weeks or so and the main thing I have really done that took me to a higher level is driving with the legs on every shot. My footwork is a lot more explosive and consistent so I have more energy throughout a match now. I get to the ball early, shuffle step, balance and hit. Also I keep losing more weight which also helps.

When I used the GP in the past I struggled at the net but now that I have been volleying with better weight transfer and footwork, I am a different person with it. Towards the end of the match I was putting away everything and the touch on volleys was just amazing. The confidence is so key at the net and I just felt like I could volley anything that came near me.

The other thing that stuck out was consistency everywhere. I held every service game and was just ripping forehands with what felt like a much higher shot tolerance. Something about the Gravity makes me get stronger every time the ball comes back. I think it is just the higher level of control and feel, but damn I love hitting with this frame so much. I hit some really dirty slices with it that stayed super low and got me free points. Of all the frames I have gone through in the past 6 months this one brings the most joy while being a compliment and not a hinderance to my game.

Also was curious if any of you all use an Eastern grip. I have been trying to go more eastern and get that knuckle completely on the back bevel but I think I probably am best with a more conservative SW grip where the index finger knuckle is resting there, but not completely. Going to try and mess with eastern more though when I practice. I am getting under the ball a lot better using my legs so I don't need such an extreme grip.

Is there much difference between the 2021 and 2023 Gravity Pro? Former is obviously significantly cheaper but the paint job is a lot worse. Looking something a little more forgiving than my 97D to play around with but with a similar feel. I'm not 100% sure how 100inch 315g is going to feel on a single handed backhand though.

Not a huge difference imo. The specs are just a lot more consistent on the new ones, the PJ is insanely good and the feel is a little more solid. But I could play with either one.

The prior Gravity Pros could come in with some really high SWs in the 340s. If you get something that is 325-330 strung SW, it will sing.

Hahaha - damn Angell and their new V5 paint scheme. That inspired me to take out my old TC90s and see what they're like after a few years off, and holy moly, they are so fun to hit with. That 70RA makes for some serious pop, and then combine it with a low strung, soft poly (GTour 3, 1.23) at 44lb, and you get some pretty amazing feel as well. Going to have to spend some time with this now, and will probably order a V5 before too long.

Some rare outdoor tennis today. Played a bit with a friend's PT630 strung with Origin, very nice and buttery but the balance is just too high / too much weight around the throat.
Tried the 293.1, for testing and trying I strung it with 1.20 iso baseline at 24kg, the 326 SW were too low so I've added around 4g somewhere between 11 and 1, that should get me to a nice 335-340 SW.
Probably the tension was also too high but not as much as I thought it would be.
Mid with triax still the best.
Wrist is still bad and shoulder even worse. I should probably take a longer timeout but the weather was so nice outside so I couldn't resist.

I actually made the opposite transition and sometimes wonder if now I'm too loopy. I have a ton of topspin that forces everyone to take it on the rise, but more difficulty driving the ball.
Fast people can still back off, correct? My coach tells me to take balls on the rise, on clay, but it's difficult and I can't drive those.

I managed to get the win. 6/0, 7/6. The painkillers really kicked in during the 2nd set and made my legs feel dead. Had a lot of double faults and basically broke every game and got broken every game lol. But clutched it out during the 2nd set breaker.

Those types of matches tilt me so much. That and matches where I feel like I let players who have no business holding serve actually hold their serve. Almost happened with one of my matches last week. Similar scoreline for me though, clutched out first set breaker after starting with 2 doubles, then 6-0 second set.

Fortunately for me I've been playing pretty well the past few weeks. Some dips yeah, but I feel like I've been making less errors.

The TC90 is a great racquet! I played with it for about 2 months without dropping a set, still thinking the head size is too small for me. The string bed is pretty open and you get a lot of spin as well, but driving the ball is easy as well.
