Diary of a Racketaholic

i tend to agree 2024 was a great year for the racket industry. strike was really just gen 4 with a little more comfort, same updates for the blade

can you let on a bit about the PD98 you playtested or nah? curious about that upper hoop box beam
I've got to wait till Jan 1 to give my review. Given that I got the frames through TW to playtest with them down in California, I want to respect the media embargo, especially on their own platform of these forums. I've already written and recorded the A-roll for the review, so expect it to be release on embargo day!

Mate I played with today plays his PT10 at 358SW, amazing how clean he can hit the ball with it.

He had two OG (1987) Prestige Pros with him as well and we hit with those for the last 10 min.
There had L5 pallets on without any grip, made them a lot more playable than mine that has grip, og etc for a hefty 370 static weight.
Might hunt down some L5 pallets and go pure pallet + OG on mine.
Both had soft multis in it with felt fantastic.

He also a Pro labs 6.1 but neither of us liked it that much which I found surprising.

Cheers mate all good, looking forward to it

So, I believe in the spirit of self deprication. As such, I must admit that after a long night of tennis this week, I went to the grocery store and when I knelt down to look at something on a bottom shelf I completely blew out the center seam of my black shorts. Luckily I was wearing full length black spandex...

The shorts were at least 10 years old, so they had had a good life.

What are everyone's go-to shorts these days that ideally don't cost almost as much as a racket?
I like the Vouri Kore shorts. They are around $60 I think, so not cheap but not crazy expansive.

I finally got out to hit, but it was a cheap hit - the ball machine, which is the fleshlight of tennis hitting.

Still it was nice to get out there and play without pain. My first impressions of the Origin were - wow, this doesn't swing that heavy. I definitely appreciated the feel of just pancaking a ball with this frame. I was swinging nice and relaxed, thats all I am working on. Move, move, move , balance. - hit. And in that regard, the Origin allows for very low energy usage to generate a heavy ball. I think this frame could be a good fit for me in terms of retraining myself to stay smooth and relaxed.

The Rafalito though really was awesome too. With 15 grams of weight on it, it plays so nicely. It's essentially a Blade at this spec, except with way more punch and a very connected feel. The SW is close to 335 so going between it and the Origin was not that difficult. I can see myself returning back to this one for matchplay if my low tension approach keeps the stringbed more consistent. I have plenty of time so I will work in my PD12s and APDs more to see how it all goes. The APD played nicely too, its not a huge leap to go from the Rafas to the APD at all.

So since having 4 quality APD frames at the ready has really satisfied from a holic perspective, I have to say the standout for me today was the O-toro string. It's only one hit, but I love this string so far. It's loud, it's crisp yet also gummy and kind of soft at the time. Pure Rush is not bad, but the O-Toro was so good that I kept going back to the Rafalito mainly just to feel that string again.

Strings are weird and I rarely go by first impressions, so I am going to keep the Pure Rush in the Origin until it breaks, and see how this progresses.

Also I strung these frames at 43#s and I think I definitely can go lower. I think I really start getting a different level of amazing feel once the tension drops to 35 or less. Control really was not much of an issue today. With low tension, you are going to hit the fence a few times, but the majority of the time it is very controllable, at least for me. Low tension poly in a power frame is a bucking bronco that takes some time to tame, but the payoff is huge - imo.

I've tried a ton. Chubbies are my go-to. Never pay full price tho. I think I got them for $30-40/pair. I love them not only for tennis but also for swimming, gym, etc.

I've had Lulu lemons, Ten thousand, CRZYOGA, target brand, etc, adidas, Vuori, etc.

Never thought I'd like products from a brand called Chubbies, but here I am. Only downside is their color ways are episodic so they don't always have ones that speak to me

Just arrived, conditions: 9.9/10

Just matched the second TC95 V3 to the first TC95 V3. Same string setup, changed to same base grip, etc. everything is the same. Very little variance required to match both to same specs.
Same with both the TC95 V2s.
Very impressed.

I just bought a Head Flexpoint Prestige Mid off 3bay and it came strung with full multi.
It plays brilliantly. I'm getting more spin and pop despite it being a tighter string pattern and smaller head size than my Yonex 97D.
I'm starting to think that racquet flex profile is more important for spin and power than string pattern or head size.

Got in a couple sets of doubles with Boom Pro 2024 yesterday morning. What stood out again is how solid this frame plays and how it's got more pop than PSVS. Biggest adjustment is definitely on my forehand wing as I don't get quite the same easy whip as with PSVS. But everything else – serving, returning, volleys, backhands, and overheads – are all just a bit easier with this frame. It's also more muted than PSVS too but enough feel is still there. Looking forward to playing with it more.
Finally got some singles in with Boom Pro 2024 and only lasted a set before PSVS came back out. Nothing bad to say about Boom Pro 2024, just not the frame for me. If you play a consistent game and like a more muted, plowy feel, this is a great stick. But after going back to the PSVS – and you know, actually rotating my shoulders on both wings – it was clear that it just suits my natural stroke and overall game better. I'm actually down to 321-323 swingweight range on PSVS and really digging it.

I would be much happier about this development – given that I own 3 PSVSs – if I wasn't currently the winning bidder on a second Boom Pro on the Bay but them the breaks of the holic life we have chosen.

@Power Player good to hear you’re back on the court. Haha, nice analogy, but when the real thing ain’t available a ball machine isn’t the worst thing in the world. My inner holic is tempted by the Origin because it has been contained for a long time now.

Stepping into the court today after 4 weeks off (Covid followed by back pain)was pure joy. When and if tennis is not a regular part of my existence it will hurt. It was good that I didn’t suffer a huge drop in my level. Also, after time off, it’s clear that I’m in a good place with my preferred set up. Picked up my stick and immediately felt right at home.

Awesome. Yeah it’s great how the muscle memory is still there. Timing takes a while but the feet were moving well for me. Good to hear on your end as well.

The origin on a BF sale was what I waited for for 2 years. It’s a pro stock style babolat. So is the rafalito , really. With everything new being ruined with muting we don’t have many options for quality ball feel anymore.

Highly recommend grabbing one if you find one at a good price.

Made the classic holic mistake tonight :notworthy:. Two nights ago I pulled out my PA98 and played lights out with it. I mean I felt GREAT. So I decided to roll with it this morning at a warmup practice for a league match tonight. I played really well this morning with it again, so I decided to play with it in my match tonight. Sure enough, I lost my serve early on in the first set and could not find it because I simply have not been playing that racquet for months. After being broken due to three straight double faults I switched back to my trusty PSVS and then served perfectly for the remainder of the first set and throughout sets two and three. When I went to switch racquets my partner asked, "Are you sure? You know they're going to think you're frazzled and target you." I told him I was completely sure. As if he was predicting the future that's exactly what happened, but picking the PSVS up again was like coming home. I had no issue on any stroke or serve that was racquet related and my level increased significantly on my serve. My partner and I couldn't get it done tonight in the end, but I REALLY regret swapping racquets for a competitive match just because I had a brief fling with a stunning frame. The PA98 is a fantastic racquet that can serve really well, but I need to spend a lot of time with a frame to feel supremely confident when I throw that ball up for a second serve in match play.

Wow, I'm super late to the ball game here, but really impressed with Triax. I ordered a few sets when it was being talked about a lot a while back, but had yet to put it into play. Really interesting string - the feel is pretty damn good, if just a slight bit rubbery, maybe. But I really like the playbility. It seems quite controlled, but doesn't rob power either. Plays great in the PSVS at 50lb.

Tried the rafalito last night! Mine measured 300SW and it was 332SW with fluxx. I threw on a leather grip but it didn’t add much weight given syntec pro is fairly heavy for a PU. Strung with OG, only 321.8g static felt very light to me. Played ok, it is forgiving and has power with easy spin. Just difficult for me to feel the swing path at that weight and feel confident. Need to bring it around 330g and try again. I guess weight under the butt cap.

I think Babolat leather added 7 grams for me. I put 5 grams of lead on the 2 wide bevels on the handle so I got 12 grams in the handle and 3 in the hoop. In your case, you could add weight on the bevels and then wrap some around the top area of the grip Cauthen style, and be in good shape. My setup gets it specced just like a Blade - 4pts hl, mid 330s SW, but a little less than 330 at 328 grams with OG.

I definitely like it more with the weight in the handle. When I owned it a few years ago, I did not mod the handle, which I think was a mistake.

I thought I was going to play today but weather had other ideas. I did add an additional 8g under the butt cap. So now I’m 330g/32.4cm/331SW. Will see how it plays tomorrow

I think that should be great. It's an awesome frame as long as you can manage the tension drop.

Can you indulge us (okay, well, me) a little bit and provide a little comparison between the new model and the old school and much loved Ezone DR? Do you own/have owned and played with the DR back in the day?

On topic: I have recently purchased a pair of Duel G 100s, intend to make them my main stick for match/comp play. Can't wait, should arrive this week, I'll post some pictures here.

I’ve been demoing a lot of racquets this winter since not playing in any leagues. Last week I played with the new Pure Strike 100 16x20 & the Speed MP. The Strike is more comfortable than previous version, but still a firm racquet. I like that it has a relatively thin beam for a 100. It has a very connected feel & serving with it was incredible with it. I also played with a Speed MP which felt polor opposite of the Strike. It’s very flexible, but it was a very easy racquet to play with. Strings very important for both racquets. A softer poly in the Strike & a stiffer poly in the Speed MP. Both racquets very solid & really do everything well. My Rafa Origin came in & I’m still debating on if I should keep it.

I feel like you’d enjoy the Origin a lot. It’s very connected in feel and not string sensitive . Also if you liked the vcore 98 tour but wanted something crisper and more connected, you may dig a weighted up rafalito.

Anyway I say keep the origin. Its a lot easier to use than an RF97, for example.

So I’ve got a ProStaff 97 v14 on the way. I’m still sidelined with that shoulder but hoping to be back out there in a couple weeks and should be able to play with it then.

It’s coming with 4G and has a stock strung static weight of 329g, so figure 334g when I slap an OG on it. I’m going to try stock first, but what are people usually doing for customization on this thing?

For comparison the specs I’m used to on the PSVS are 335g, 330 SW, 5-6 points head light. So stock should be okay? And how do the two frames compare, to those of you familiar with playing both (like @Power Player)?

The Origin is fantastic but not a racket you can just mix in while hitting others. I think it’s easy to use but even switching to a Blade Pro makes you think you are hitting a toy.

Luckily I’m just all in. Used holic money to put a black friday sale SID SL ultimate on my XC hard tail. Weird that other rackets didn’t even tempt me.

PS - cutting a steerer tube made my nads shrink up more than when I was doing racket surgery. worked out perfectly tho.

i love this mindset

yeah I’m in peace. gotta hand it to you, i think you were one of the first holics quietly praising the Origin. I never thought for a second it would be something I would like. Heck, I even love the rad paint now.
thanks for that! it's like Goku training in the gravity machine at multiples of earth gravity haha. unfortunately for me i'm still holicing but i'm basically just bouncing between the extremes of wanting to have only head pc600s/pc2.0s and only origins.

Extreme Pro 2024 is still winning for me. It was great again in yesterdays indoor carpet doubles session. Haven't felt weak with this stick yet, despite still having to dial in the launch angle / liveliness. I have Hawk Touch 1.20 mains, Hawk 1.20 crosses at 46/44 right now but going with 46 or 47 for both mains and crosses next. That should do enough.

Meanwhile I still can't decide how to thin out the rest of the collection. Besides the '24 EP, I currently have three of the '23 VC95 (which will go down to one when I have decided on a new main stick), an '18 VC95, a 100D, PSVS, PS97 V14, RF97 V13, BP16 V8, '23 GPro, '23 Prestige MP-L, TGT334.2, TGT293.1, PT57A 18m.

One moment I can find a reason for most to sell at least a few of them. The next moment I can't justify it, being afraid of getting regrets because each is so much fun in its own right... how to deal with this?

I’m mainly playing doubles now & really working on my court movement. Closing off space on the court, putting away volleys & overheads. Just afraid the Origin would be sluggish on this part of my game. I’m sure on baseline rallying & serves it would be fine.

A few days ago I made a list of the racquets I have sold in the last years, i wish I had kept at least one for each pair.

@tim-ay , I know you hit the PSVS extensively, how does the origin compare?

I still love the PSVS and it will make a return someday. It hits a great ball.

What draws me to the Origin is the quality of ball and I’m playing pretty much singles. Even my 75% rally ball is crazy heavy and penetrating and the feel is unmatched in anything I’ve ever used. Certainly not feel in a classical sense, but just ball murderingly raw breaking glass feel. Ha. Even mishits out of the sweet spot give you that annoying Rafa ball he would hit at times that is a little short with wicked spin, then stepping in on the next one often overwhelms the other player.

Origin is tougher to serve with, but even that I’m used to at this point. Even a relaxed second serve can be very high quality.

Something about the weight just calms me as I feel the racket and it’s easy for me to prep early. I’ve always gotten a little slappy with sub 330SW frames, but that is just gone with the Origin. I hit cleaner with more spin and it’s a stable beast.

That being said, I think the PSVS is so accessible as it can be set up to anyone’s preferences. Origin is just black or white, it works for you or it doesn’t. Or it’s a novelty hit which is at least fun.

I don't think I have enough time with the 98 to say much about it. Maybe 10mins total hitting but not even the kind of hitting where you can focus on the frame, just fun points and drills. I also think the DR is pretty overrated. I don't really get the hype.

Are you playing matches with the Origin too? I'm going to lead off with the Origin when I start with the coach again. I will know pretty fast if I can use it full time. If not, ill still keep mine, but then it will be an APD versus Rafalito showdown.

Kind of into the concept of the new Pure Drive 98, but also not, because I know the feel is going to not be nearly as good as the Swirly or PD12.

Im sure there are plenty of youtube videos or forum posts here with the answer, but roughly how much lead is needed to create origin specs with a stock APDO?

yeah it’s the only racket i’ve been using for matches. I’ve played a number of 3 setters and it’s a total myth that the frame works you out more. If anything, I save energy using it…. but it probs is net neutral. I even used it in matches when the heat gun was still set to 11. I’m loving the 70 degree days with it though, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the racket!

I have to give this set of Pure Rush I strung up in the Origin another chance, but I really want to try O-Toro in it. Very different string in comparison. Just seems like its more up my alley, but maybe they will feel different next time I hit them.

I also have Wasabi X which I will try as a cross too. Gonna go back down to 40#s from the 43#s I'm stringing at currently. Funny, my youtube feed is now giving me all these tennis influencers suddenly raving about low tension setups.

I've played a few friendly sets with the Origin but no serious match play that counts for anything (ie, no UTR, USTA, local ladder). Hoping to play some league this winter, so maybe I'll see how it goes then! Intrigued by the PD98 too, esp with the reported 16x20. I'm pretty content with my already overwhelming collection atm but I have to say I'm really looking forward to trying the new ezones.
