Diary of a Racketaholic

Clearly though the Toroline stats are selection bias - they are targeting influencers, so obviously there will be a high percentage of influencers who use Toroline a lot. Don't get me wrong - agreed that they are good strings and a reason why they've done well recently and why many influencers use them. However, for the vast majority of rec players, most are using Blast/HyperG/ALU/etc., and still haven't heard of Toroline except for the occasional Karue fan who uses K-pop.

I do think they're a great option, especially since they're comfortable and have decent tension maintenance and snap-back, but in general they're too muted / rubbery for my liking as I prefer a crisper set up (ie Lynx Tour / Confidential / Tour Bite)
I am not very picky when it comes to strings so I use whatever I pick up on sale. I did try Toroline strings because of the YTers and I do like the bright colors. But for me personally, RPM Blast, PTP, Cyclone, Toroline, Hawk Power, and a handful of other strings are all useable and pretty even for me.

is the healthcare discount dead too?
Not sure if that's a double entendre for something else . . .

It still looks to be alive, but I don’t qualify for that one.
Can you PM me the code so I can give it a try?

I was strictly a Confidential, S7T & Lynx Tour user until I had elbow pain. I switched to Super Toro & Toro Toro because they’re more comfortable strings. Super Toro still gives me a crisp feel & Toro Toro gives me more comfort in stiffer frames.

Illicit late-night rendezvous are being had with my friend’s Pure Strike Vs. Just too much to like. I have made an order so as to stop messing with my friend’s gal and have thus arrived at the summer of 2023. Prestige v Strike v PTOS wunderbattle looming.
SWEET. The VS seems like a nice match for you - classic style, but more modern power and of course the epic 16x20.

I'm not going to say the old Storms/Controls feel like a Prestige, but they feel really, really good and have a lot of free punch that makes them easier to use, imo. The VS fits into that window for me, albeit a more modern version.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have just kept my Pure Storm GTs and just pulled them out when I wanted a classic feel. That's basically what I will do now with my VS/Copper Storm Team and PC Swirly. Probably unloading the rest of my classic frames besides my Austrian Bumblebee (that would be a complete sin).

I just had the weirdest thing happen with my new racquet.

Bought a new PK 5G that just arrived from TW today. I go to string it and am feeling around for the throat grommets as I'm pulling the starting mains through. I don't feel them and am thinking maybe they are pushed out but don't see anything. Compared it to my other 5G and there are no throat grommets in this new one. Luckily TW has great CS so they are sending me a new set of grommets for the frame. Very strange though. 1st time I've come across something like this.

Funny you mention the Storm GT, as what was funny yesterday is that my buddy then put his other all-time Babs into my hands after the Vs to get my take on the other two compared to the Vs.:

First the Pure Control Tour (more stability and simply awesome ball at the heftier weight (I think) but not as refined of a finish/feel finish as the Vs, maybe gloss a factor there) …

And then the Pure Storm GT (sensational feel - I used to love and play with the Team version weighted up, but the standard last night was unstable in stock form, but the feel here was just awesome and familiar and would be stellar with weight just as the Team was) …

I always argued for the Storms back in the day and I see now they age wonderfully. The Strike Vs we demoed for just a cup of coffee awhile back and I remember liking it a lot but not thinking it was worth making a big purchase over as I was so in tune with the Prestiges and these were the same kind of stick. Also, I think I had a bit of bias thinking the Vs would be like the Pure Storm Ltd, amazing control but neutered on serves. I haven't been able to test the serves as I’m only just now cleared by physio to begin doing this slowly, but goodness have I loved what I have experienced the last few hits with my buddy’s Vs and now that you can snag them on the cheap, absolutely worth a longer term look-see. There could be more here than I thought before. It’s the dart bullet ball that comes out of the stick when you decide to lean into one that has really made an impression on me, as if I can find this ball in addition to the deep rally balls with my wrist/arm only at 80-90 percent, then I think it could be really great with more strength in the limb in the coming weeks, as well as tuning the frame just so.

And I can’t say this enough, the racquet is just beautiful to look at. Really looking forward to exploring this one. The way the ball sticks in the pocket and then shoots out is very very much what I like. I’ve only tried my buddy’s hybrid so far but am thinking full TB 1.20 strung low as a first pass.

Yep, I strung mine at 40#s. Something crisp is best option I think. Probably the best looking frame I have owned.

I too prefer the storm gt feel to about anything. This pure control swirly and older, copper storm also deliver the goods. The cool part is these frames can be found for sub $100 with patience. An excellent racquet to have on the shopping list when casual holicing.

Just came back from my first time on the court in almost 10 weeks. Man, it felt good to hit again -- even though I'm at 60-70% strength with my rotator cuff/labrum injury. I didn't think I would last 5 minutes before my shoulder gave out, but I hit against the wall for 15 minutes, then another 30 or so doing easy rallies with an older gentleman who showed up to also use the wall. The funny thing about the injury is that it forces me to play more fundamentally sound; to avoid pinching my rotator cuff, I need to do long-slow preparations (avoiding sudden, darting movements) and that means I'm doing my takeback early enough. Footwork is sound, so I just need to shake off the rust and hit more.

What got me off my ass is having my ProStaff 97 v14 arrive on Wednesday. Really wanted to try this sucker. And wow, what a stick. It came in at 334g static, 320 SW and 9 pts head light, strung with 4G. That's a lot more head light than I'm used to (with my PSVS that has lead at 12, and especially my Blade Pro) so it was very easy to wield and find my stroke again. Forehands are very nice, though it seems to want a slightly flatter shot than the PSVS. Took a while to find the timing on my 2HBH but I can see it being fine there -- though slices were really fun, and I even tried a OHBH which was ugly but the racket did well. I'm still not up for serving or overheads so TBD on that. But it's a lovely racket with some really good feel; not quite as raw as the Graphene Prestige Pro but better than the Blades for *sure*.

The 4G was firm and had great control, but it was pretty low-powered and wasn't giving me the spin and depth I'm used to. So I'm getting some razor code 18 put in it (at 47 lbs) to see if that juices it up. I also have some room (with the low-ish SW and head-light balance) to put some weight in the hoop. For those who have used it (@Power Player, @Chairman3, etc.) does this take lead well? Was thinking of doing 2-4 grams at 12, but I could also try 10 and 2. Thoughts?

For the last 10 mins or so I switched to my PSVS just to compare, and of course that racket is still the GOAT. I did enjoy the extra sizzle it has -- I got more depth (this one did have razor code), a little more spin, and that certain Babolat feel. But I can see myself taking out the ProStaff a lot. Might even get another one and customize it on Wilson (to avoid the copper paint job which I think is fine but not great).

does this take lead well?
I've only recently put a little lead on. Mine were early production and had higher SW so it didn't seem necessary.
I started small, 1g at 12 to see if I could help my backhand a bit. (Obviously it's me) but I thought it might aid in dropping the racquethead for a better topspin backhand.

Seems good so far even with only a gram. I actually think it helped my forehand have a little more pop too.

Cool, thanks. I’ll start with 2g at 12 and see how that does. Should get me to about 327 SW and 336g static. Decent spec!

Yeah I leaded my PS97. I think I was at 330 SW and 339 grams. Still kept a really nice headlight balance. I strung mine at 42#s. I was crossing different polys with HIT pro.

For any of you who are in Germany, someone sells Kohlschreiber's personal frame for 100 euros. (or even a bit lower if you negotiate well). I think that's quite a good price for a pro stock six one 95 in k blade paintjob. (also, Kohlschreiber was a good and well known player, that adds value as well being his personal frame)

On the Kleine DE site?

Wish Christmas came earlier for me.
The Vcore100 suited the seasonal festival outings and man, it was like riding a bike. It has definitely rewritten the definition of “an extension of the arm” for me. lol.

did you buy it new? curious to see if your opinion changes after 2-3 hours after the grommets settle

No. These are the 2021 version I got a few years ago when I lived in the UK. Last I used was about 5/6 months ago for local leagues.
They were stashed away until last week for tennis related Christmas dos.
I need to go back to the records to check on the specs, cos they just worked for me off the bat. (My recent results for the last 3 months or so hasn’t been great - too much tinkering/change of racquets, so I am keen to “repair the damage” with these Vcore100s. lol.)

Great that you're back into some light hitting, congrats! I can see how that injury makes you having to hit relaxed with early and long preparation. It's also nice for getting into a good rhythm and keeping the muscles as relaxed as possible throughout the session.

The PS97 V14 indeed is fantastic, I have the same impressions as you about the racket. Stock but strung I used to be at 337.6g, 31.8 cm and 323 SW which felt great. I added I believe just 1 gram at 12 later on and that made it unproportionally even better. So it should be 326 SW now. Doesn't need anything more for me. It's so solid and gives more sting to the ball now. Agreed that it seems to want to hit slightly flatter / through the court than the PSVS.

Got both the PS97 and PSVS loaned out right now but looking forward to getting them back.

I pulled one of the back muscles a bit last Monday so it took it quite easy in yesterdays session. Used the TGT334.2 for most of it and for the first time really started to groove with it. It was very windy and cold though, and we used TF X-One balls which I felt were quite light and hard. So those weren't too nice with the wind and my open pattern racket; they were sent flying sometimes.

334.2 feels really soft and light. I strung it up right before with Poly Tour Fire 1.25 at 47 and its's 335g, 31.5cm and 321.5 SW. Next time I'll try an extra gram at 12. It used to have way more lead underneath the bumper but now I think I removed ever so slightly too much.
In how it plays, it's of course crazy similar to the retail Prestige MP-L, but this one feels softer and I'm able to get this one more HL than my 2023 MP-L.

I ended the session with the 293.1 and got inspired by @JGads to switch the leather for a synthetic base grip, which in my case is always Head Ultimate. Kept the same specs by adding back the weight difference with lead strips on the pallet. Also with this racket, I'm really starting to groove now I think. I do feel like this one might need a tiny touch of extra lead at 12 too, to help and stabilize the thinnn 20mm beam a bit more. I'm at 337g, 31.65 cm and 325 SW at the moment.

A tad more SW on your 293.1

got it. i had a really strange experience with the 2023 version, so i was wondering if you might have experienced the same. i found the 2023 vc100 played better before the grommets fully settled, and you could actually feel it settling. i thought i was delusional, so i tried 2 more new ones that i got and same thing. it was super strange.

Not tried the 2023 version (yet). A couple of guys at the club has it but in L2 grip size and fullbed of poly. Doesn’t have softer grommet? I don’t recall it with the 2021s.
I might pick one up if it goes on sale after Christmas.
Have you played the 2021 version too?

I’m curious on feedback from anyone that has played with the PSVS and the new Pure Strike 97. To me, the PSVS was a little too raw stock but I was able to give it a thumpier feel by adding lead to the hoop, replacing the leather with a synthetic grip and stuffing some memory foam up into the handle (also for HL balance).

Does the Pure Strike 97 feel identical stock to the PSVS?

Personally felt the PS97 to be slightly more muted. Also in comparison, although I couldn't measure, the PS97 I received seemed to have heavier specs. It was a bit more demanding in comparison. Not by a whole lot though. I very much enjoyed both but needed something a bit more forgiving so moved off both of them.

I agree with that. I picked one up used, and it's nearly the same, but just a touch more muted feeling. To me, there's really no reason to buy the Strike 97 while you can still get the PSVS new for less, or used in good condition for cheap. Is it also true that there will be a new cosmetic for the Strikes in 2025? I feel like I saw someone mention that, but maybe I was dreaming.

Strike you say?

Truly one of the finest paintjobs ever made.

Strikers: favorite lead, weight and string setups? Of course we’re all different but wondering what has worked for people. My two will need weight but they couldn‘t have been better matched: 3 grams apart but identical 283sw. Will leave the leather for now.

I took off the grommet and added 4 grams at 12. Kept the leather grip. Strung specs are 338/328/320.

When o was playing the PSVS, I had lead across 12 to get it to 295-300 SW.

I’d have to check an old spreadsheet on what the static ended up at, but I also added weight in the butt cap so that it would be 31.8cm strung balance.

Round 1.25 polys seemed to play the best for me.

That serve. Oh that serve.
And the net play. Lethal.
And the forehand.

I should probably get a couple again

Grip: mine did play the best with the leather grip but I swapped it out for comfort purposes.

Lead: 4g at 12 is perfect. Gave me specs of 335g static, 329 SW. 6 pts HL balance.

Strings: thin, crispy poly. Razor code white 18 is my favorite. FireWire Boost is awesome. Black Knight with GhostWire also pretty good. Toro toro is stiff but comfy and spinny and controlled. All of them complement the frame (and for color matching, FireWire and toro toro are unmatched).

So glad to keep seeing the PSVS love! Despite all the holic pursuits I’ve done this year, that stick has been my main for 11 months and I always come back to it. Most addictive racket on earth!

This is about the spec I would like to get it close to my Heads, but I’ve even been loving my buddy’s completely stock except for an overgrip on the leather. (We haven’t measured his SW yet). He has a syn gut/alu hybrid in his.

I’m going with TB 1.20 in one and Cyberflash 1.20 in the other to try out the edged poly vs round response.

i like mine up around 335SW, 340 static. The one racket that durafluxx really sucks in it. Really like crisper strings and love razor soft in it, but others have had arm pain with that so watch out.

PS , @TwinCinema is right about firewire boost in it. I don’t like firewire in anything else really, but it is stellar in the PSVS.

Oh man I’m happy to hear this as I was considering DF instead of CF for the second frame but was worried DF would be too low powered in this so went with CF. I figure I will like the TB bed, CF could go either way but it plays solidly in just about everything.

DF just feels really dull in it…I guess the muting of the low power string just hits the wrong chord with the frame. It’s playable, but I hate the feel. TB will probs be super in it as the crispness is key. Good move using CF also.

I’ve been really digging O toro in the Origin and I would think it would play well in the PSVS also. But I can’t put that yellow into that gorgeous PSVS, haha.

Strikers: favorite lead, weight and string setups? Of course we’re all different but wondering what has worked for people. My two will need weight but they couldn‘t have been better matched: 3 grams apart but identical 283sw. Will leave the leather for now.
32in (yes that's correct) of lead stacked from 10 to 2.

Still maneuverable, but this is what it took to get up to ball crushing playability. Hit Pro at 47lbs.

You probably don't want to follow my lead here, but I like it best around 340SW, with a nice HL balance, so that means a lot of lead at 12 (6-8g min) and then plenty in the handle. I like OEHMS leather for the grip. Still swings easy.

Why get one when you can get two, great buy haha. I'm definitely in the lead only at 12 camp for the PSVS. My current one is 339g, 31.6 cm and 323 SW with Poly Tour Fire 1.25, synthetic base grip, overgrip, rubber band dampener. It needed 4.2g of lead at 12 and 2.3g of tungsten putty under the buttcap to get to these specs. I'm usually lower in SW than most of the people here. You're probably somewhere in between.

Oh right, I also have 5g of bluetac in the handle to compensate for lost weight when I took off the leather grip.

Tour bite, full bed hyper g, or hyper g hybrid have all worked well for me. I've played around with tensions between 53-57 lbs and like 53-54lbs best. No lead on mine

I was always so scared of having to replace those grommets. I just tried to lift them up a little and jam the leaf under. Those grommets were intimidating.
Yeah I have some spares. It I can’t remember if I just removed the existing or had to use a new set. Either way, it wasn’t that bad. Visible lead at 12 on a pj this nice just seems wrong.
