I decided to take inventory of my rackets today. Clearly, I buy too many of one stick when I’m enthusiastic about it and am not good at selling them. The only ones I’ve used to any degree in the last year are my pro stock Radicals. I haven’t really taken anything else out much for a fun or nostalgic hit. Just not interested in that. The Radical is my jam and I know it. I don’t really want to think about my racket or strings, and I don’t. I want to think about getting better and I am improving (in between injuries). It’s a mixed bag of feelings looking at all these right now. I feel like they tell a circuitous story with a good conclusion. Without all that tinkering could I have gotten to where I am now? I don’t think so. So I won’t lament the time and money spent because I learned a ton on my journey. I still keep up on the newest rackets and strings, I just have not been compelled to try anything new for a long time now.

Lost my league match tonight but I did get to try different specs on my 305s and afterwards try my other frames.

After playing with 3 different specs and moving some lead around I've settled on stock with 1g of lead at 12 which brings the SW to 323. The Karue spec'd one just felt too heavy when I started getting tired. The one with no lead at the 319/320 SW didn't have the same power. When I started out with the 326SW I was getting a ton of plow and power out of the frame but I was hitting my shots just long by a few inches. For someone with better skills and fitness than me I'd definitely suggest trying it at 326SW but that was just too much for me to control.

I did hit with the GT98 afterwards. While it's a fun frame to play with, it felt heavy and I was late on my swings compared to the 305s that I had dialed in. Playing tired is what truly lets you figure out if a frame is the right fit.

Is anyone here playing with >340 swing weight rackets?

I keep adding weight to mine and it feels better, but at the same time it starts feeling a bit silly when I reach pro level SW with a very far from pro skill level.

It’s just a lot more natural to stay loose with a heavy SW the way I work.

The 350+ swingweight Origin has a lot of popularity later, main advocat @tim-ay iirc.

I'm usually in the 330-340 range.
What racquet btw?

A Yonex Percept 100 is what I’m playing with currently. Tried the 97D and the Ezone 98 too over extended periods with the same weight adding tendency.

Been a bit of a Yonex fan since I restarted my tennis «career» last year

ls it the 351 pro stock? What’s your favorite string setup in that?

If you don't hit everything late or long all the time, no downside in going higher in swingweight imo.
I do think though that yonexes swing a bit slower due to the shape

Happy to service the community. And a good opportunity to try out a frame ppl might be reluctant to gamble on buying

If I pick up more momentum with sales I’ll try to give away the Extreme Pro
Word on the street is that the Extreme MP is the sneaky incredible frame, maybe even more so than the Pro.

However this could just be my street.

I'm usually 330. Back on the Origin train and currently around 355-360.

Yes sir - Radical MP 351.1 27.25, Hawk Rough 17 / Hawk 16 50 lbs
I’ve got one in hand for some further testing, feels much better than the older layup. Will probably try a Gut/RPM hybrid to max out the feel, however a TBC match I played last night with the Prestige cooled me slightly on the gut hybrid for me in matches compared to full poly, as I went 5-7 with the hybrid and then 5-3 with the poly. But I was also playing like crap, generally.

Returning to tennis after nearly a ten year break following marathon running but I’ve had to retire due to injury. I used to post on here ALOT when Ross first started this great thread so looking to come back. First hit in years next week, picked up a these Ultras and have had them strung in Solinco Hyper-G at 53lbs, it appears tensions have dropped a lot in the last few years!?

It can be a big help if you are trying to stay loose and not muscle the ball. Main thing is your serve needs to be the same - loose, no muscling.

I'm in the same boat, but like others have said - for some reason the Origin doesn't swing like it's 350-360 SW for me.

I say stick with it, because it can help you develop the proper kinetic chain on all shots. If you are start struggling one day, you can always drop it back down. But it's incredibly fun to contact the ball with that level of plow, plus it saves a lot of energy if you loose.

Was somewhat amazed that Nadal played such a physical play style at the highest level with such a spec, but now that I have it, I see why - if you have a more vertical swing path and somewhat extreme SW grip, it gives you so much free depth for much less energy used. But it's a tennis racquet and super personal, which is why so many people use so many different weights and setups.

Anyway, have a good time with it. Remember that some of the older Wilson "granny racquets" had a similar spec - high Sw, thick beam and almost an even balance (if not head heavy). They were made for older folks who tap the ball and need that extra power. Nadal just took that concept and made it work for the pro game by controlling it with spin. So high SW does not mean you have to be a pro, in fact low SW requires more energy. Pros have dropped SWs down because the game is so fast at that level and they are all in insanely good shape. But you still have guys like Djoko using very very high SWs and doing alright. So it's a personal thing.

I tried gut poly as well. Ratcheted it up to 56 lbs and it was amazing feeling, but I still couldn’t control it in match play. Stopped that expensive experiment in favor of full poly and haven’t looked back. I wanna take big cuts at the ball and not worry about it sailing on me.

A few weeks back me and some other holics in here got to meet the owners of FURI- Erick and Michelle. Cheers to @Boredsurfer for arranging. Erick sent me the latest Arma Pro v2 to demo and I’ve gotten out with it a couple times for dubs. So far I’m impressed. If you perhaps thought that the pro staff X was a little too much (I did), this frame is a must try. Box beam goodness. It’s allegedly a 101 sq in frame but looks and plays more like a 97/98. Also no muting so the feel is all there. Threw in the Beckett setup of O-toro/Sync and it plays great. Lots of spin. Still lots of testing to go on this one but don’t sleep on it for sure. Next I’ll try it with their C4 string.

Edit- This is the 305g version

I stupidly signed up for the MS150 for some reason. Did a 30 mile road training ride last sunday. About to head out to try a 30 mile gravel ride this morning. 1 of the reasons i almost didnt sign up is because this takes away from my tennis time. Whille I like biking, I love tennis.

Is that one of the two day things where you do 75 Sat and another on Sunday? If you’re taking it easy, it could be a good training boost. If you’re riding hard, you want some serious 60-80 days ahead of that. Although gravel counts for probs 1.5 road miles give or take. Paris/Roubaix.

@JGads I am now using gut/poly at 49/46 (and some at 49/43), the spin is close to full poly, imho.

Oh the hybrid spin is loads, but I’ve been wondering if it’s a bit too jumpy on the power scale of late when A/B-ing in match play. In hitting the hybrid is a dream. But..

Two days ago I felt so off and lost a 5-7 opening set to someone I think is a lesser player with the hybrid (albeit this was me, not the racquet or string’s fault, I was in such bad form and also feeling stiffness in my back), then switched to the old ALU bed in a second set that paused at 5-3 my serve when we ran out of time and have to continue another day. Then today I faced a really dynamite player wielding a Rafalito and used the old ALU bed again and played quite out of my mind, really, for a 6-3, 6-2 win. When we played a practice set after I went back to the hybrid and we were at 5-5 when we had to finish: I still played well with the hybrid, but my misses were long again and things just felt slightly looser, out of my full command, even though I had some extra pop which came in handy nicely on some points, yet those mistakes alongside the extra pop irked me.

So I’m leaning again towards dead full poly beds just giving me the freedom to swing away. Although I want to try a black Vs gut/RPM hybrid set I have in at least one frame because it’s supposed to be a bit more controlled than natural colored gut, and this specific hybrid feels incredible in my buddy’s TGT.

Anyway, technically speaking since that other match is on pause, little Marin’s win streak is up to 6. Tomorrow I play a non-league bout against my old Nemesis who has since moved up a level, so that will be a great litmus test to see where I really am. I don’t expect to win but If I can keep it respectable I’ll be happy. He’s in apparently killer form, as he’s above .500 in our highest level full of true 5s and above. The guys at the very top of that group are a joke, as I watched the last season’s final recently and my jaw was on the ground.

Yeah it is tough to go from years of full poly to gut mains, at least that was the case for me. I still really enjoy it, and have it in a few frames, but I remember losing a 3rd set tiebreaker 13-11 because over the course of the match I lost some confidence with my depth and started taking some sting off my shots to compensate.

Personally I think where I am sitting with the low 40's full poly, it is the best of both worlds for me. Easy on the arm, plenty of controllable power and spin. Good luck with the next match, maybe everything syncs back up with the GP and you goat, who knows. If you can make it happen, the feel and comfort of gut is amazing. But if it doesn't work out, you already know you can slap some durafluxx/etc in there and be back on track.

The crazy thing is the ALU I have in the all-poly Marin right now is the 115 gauge, as I wanted to lower the SW a bit, and to me it’s crazy as this bed still is playing nicely, 10-12 hours now on this bed. I’ll try my go-to 120 Tour Bite to compare but the ALU 115 is the string to beat for me in this frame right now.

Not sure if you were active here at the time but a few years back I went on a tear with super skinny polys like that and the short story is that I loved the feel of them and think they are super underrated. The only reason I went back to 1.23 is because I go real low in tension now and the skinnies drop a lot of tension. But god, they are good. I didn't even know ALU 1.15 even existed but I can imagine the feel is top notch. Another string I rarely like, but loved in 1.15 is Solinco Confidential. May be worth a shot if you continue down this path. It has this plush pockety feel to it that reminds me a little of Gensis Black Magic, but crispier.

Yeah, I missed that era I guess. But I’m blown away by how nice feeling and mostly how much longer lasting this 115 is than what I expected.

I guess I’m just meant to be with the Adidas Barricade. Every time I abandon it for a while, I eventually start to struggle mightily and then come back and the status quo returns. Case in point against an aggravating pusher type league player

Match 1
(Barricade)- 6/2, 6/2 W
Match 2
(Wilson Pro Comp) - 6/0, 6/7, 0/1 (3-10) L
Match 3
(Wilson PS 6.1si) - 6/7, 6/3, 1/0 (10-6) W
Match 4
(Barricade) - 6/2, 6/2 W
You heard it here first.

Too bad we can't play with afresh gut/poly stringjob every session.
Not so easy to tune tension with gut/poly imo. Main reason I've usually used the thick gauges for both gut and cross, delays the ball launching longer. The extra easy pop on serve is nice though in general.

If you do the full route starting from Houston is 100 miles the 1st day and 80 miles the 2nd day. I dont see that being doable for me nor would it be enjoyable. I will be doing the 50 mile starting point the 1st day and 46 miles the 2nd day. Especially since I wont be able to train during March due to fasting for Ramadan.

Surprisingly I feel better after the 30 mile gravel ride today than I did after the 30 mile road ride last week. I think its because a lot of the gravel route was shaded while the road ride has the sun beating down on you. The sun just destroys me. This is the reason I like playing my tennis matches in the evening.
