Diary of a Racketaholic

I’ve been in a bit of a shoe crisis. I was a Gel Res guy until the X’s. Played in the Lacoste AG. loved it but once I moved on to the second pair, I got intense foot pain. Moved to the Barricade 13. Went through a pair, and the second set I got - foot pain again.

I just tried the v14 Barricade and that was a quick nope. They aren’t bad but they are less comfortable than the 13s while being a lesser quality tennis shoe.

I went to my local shop yesterday, and tried on a ton of different shoes. Surprisingly, Babolat was my favorite by far. I picked up a pair of SFX4 for now and plan to get a pair of the Jet Mach 4 which sounds like what you are after (speed u& stable). I also had to size down a full size in the babs. I was between 1/2 - full size in sizing down.
I've been playing with the Diadem Court Burst lately, partly because I got a good deal on them. I have a hard time stomaching the cost of some of these shoes as they all seem to last about the same amount of time.
At this point I'm more or less committed to sale/clearance shoes. Even after getting the Gel Res and FF from asics last year, I haven't found a top tier shoe that seems to be worth the cash over outgoing models of 'mid tier' shoes.

I’ve got wide feet, and using the Wilson Rush pro ace. Granted, haven’t tried a whole lot else, it just works for me.

What shoes are you guys rocking these days? I’ve had a heck of time finding a suitable replacement to my asics GR 9s that were a nice combo of stability without being too bulky. I went through several pairs of Court FF3 which are nice but a hate how it’s difficult to slide and now they are pretty much out of stock except size 14 and weird colors. I’ve tried Solution Speed FF3 which are too narrow in the toe box and gave me bunions! Finally, I’ve been wearing Lacoste AG-LT23. Great sliding but clunky and heavy, don’t feel fast.

Any recommendations would be appreciated! I’m a speedy baseline counterpuncher, looking for something stable but fast if such a shoe exists, with a somewhat of a wider toe box.
If you’re not a toe dragger the diadem shoes are excellent!

I wrote comparison comments on either this thread, the Vcore thread, or the PA98 thread. Just check my comment history to find them. Happy to answer any questions you have or to expand on anything.

I think the PA98 is the best, but similar to the Ezone in overall playability. Vcore 98 is great, but less time on the string bed and feels more powerful than the other two.

I think this is the closest the 3 lines have ever been to each other. I think most players can pick any one of these and start playing well with whatever stick they get.
Ezone is good for everything, but that makes it boring to me. I wasn't in love with the 2023 PA98 feeling, so I'm unsure about the 2026 PA98. I've gotten an Ultra 99 Pro and having power is something fun once in a while. That's what intrigued me about the 2026 VC98.

Oh with that information definitely give the Vcore 98 a go. The U99P is a fun hit. The higher swing weight and head heavy feeling is great at first, but I eventually felt the manueverability suffered too much. Unless youre a flatter "slap heavy" player, I would take the VC98 over the U99P.

Both have good looking bold shiny paint jobs too!!!!

Glossy? Check

Black? Check?

Prince Tours? Check

Winner
Yeah, i like that black and orange. I wonder if the tour 95s will still be green? The ones I got from Japan are not black exactly (more like a dark bluish gray?), and have green lettering. They are glossy though, and look very nice!

Thank you, will check them out!

I played in the SFX4 yesterday and they may need to be casual hitting shoes. They are fine but there wasn’t much performance wise that made me think they are anything special. I did try on the Jet Mach 4 and they seem to have potential in the comfort + performance department. In those, I wear a 10 just like in the v13 Barricades.

How do you acquire these?
I went through a service that buys, packs, and ships from JP (Zen Market). The shipping/customs cost about as much as the racquets, but all told, it worked out to the going rate for new frames here (~$300 each). I didn't realize the specs would be different from the tours we are getting here. I think it's pretty great at 310g static as a starting point - plenty of room to customize without getting too heavy. Light hitting only today, but it felt really good at 330g/325SW. I'll keep it there for a bit to see how things go.

310 strung static? Thanks for sharing that info

Love the Speed FF4! Honeymoon but I may like better than GR9! Great combo of stability and speed. Very comfortable. It helps that I won my match too
That's good cause it sounds like a lot of folks haven't been all that happy with the update. For whatever reason Asics decided to mess around with the fit.

The new FF4s fit very similar to GR9, wider in the mid-foot and toe box. FF3 were too narrow, couldn’t wear them.
How wide is your foot? The 2e gel res x should show up here tomorrow so ll see how that fit is. FF4s dont come in a wide fit so its probably not worth trying in my case.

No, sorry for the lack of specifics - the JP tour 95 is 310 unstrung. The one I have strung up was about 313g unstrung. With Cyclone 19, it was 323g strung.and now I have added some weight so it's about 330g.

Previous US models of the Tour 95 were all 320g unstrung, I think.

While we’re on shoes, any favorites for narrow feet? I’ve had a few pairs of Cybersonic 2s and debating on whether or not to load up before they completely disappear.

Nice, glad you ended up liking them.. Strangely awesome shoe for me as well, and the only shoe since the GR9 I haven’t hated. In fact I haven’t even stepped back into the GR9s yet since getting the Speeds for what I thought would be a brief trial - Asics allows free returns 90 days here even on used shoes, but these aren’t going back… love them as a lighter and actually more comfy all-around-the-foot shoe than even the GR9s… not quite the elite performer as the GR9 but crazy good for a speed/lighter shoe. … first Speed since the original Speed 2s (I’m talking OG Solution Speed, not the FF2) that I’ve liked this much.

Loving the New FF4’s too. I had to go up a half size as they ran short. But they are more comfortable than previous Speeds. The added comfort is appreciated, but still lightweight feel.

How stable are the new ASICS FF Speed 4? I worked the 2’s and loved how fast they were but had to love on because the lack of stability out a lot of stress on my foot. I’ve played in the Gel Res 8/9, Lacoste Ultra, and Barricade 13s most recently. I’m intrigued by these new speeds but I would need decent lateral stability, I think. People saying it’s for Gel Res 9 dna have me I trigger.

Exactly how I would describe them!!

I would say the Solution Speed FF3 would be an excellent choice for more narrow feet. They were a little too narrow for me and I moved to the FF4.

I've only got 2 hours on mine so far, but they felt plenty stable. Are they Court FF3 stable? No. But I would say they are pretty close to GR9.

@Guttersnipe does this one count?

Definitely not as stable as the GR9, but those are stability tanks with the Dynawall and hard rubber upper keeping you feeling rigidly locked in… But in the speed shoe category for me these are as secure feeling as you can get away with. By contrast I’ve tried the recent Wave Exceeds ever since loving the 4, and the recent exceeds make me feel like I’m about to roll an ankle just testing them on the try on. The Speed 4s do have a softer upper material that I think may get stretchy and become less locked in feeling with many hours and hard stops, but for the moment the shoe is something I just forget about when I’m playing, which is what you want in a shoe.

Damn my wide feet. Jealous of you all who can slide into the regular asics without having to size up. Should have my 2Es in a couple hours and ill see how that goes. Since diadora killed the wide blue shields, I've been in an endless search for something as good. I play on a lot of hardcourts still, so these Xs may work for me.

The kswiss and babolats are not bad, but more stability and premium comfort feel would be great.

For the Speed FF4 gang, could his work for a Court FF3 user in terms of fit?
Is it as high as the court ff? With my insoles I might slip out if the shoe is too low.

In racquet news, orderd a Carbon paintjob Prince ATS 98 (good price used) after someone posted sexy pictures in the Prince thread.
Wrist getting better, no issues today, fingers crossed.

I rock the accomplish or the defier when I can. Love me some phat white leather.

If you mean the volume of the shoe vertically, above the foot, I felt like this was where the Court FF3 was unusually tall and a but longer had excess material that would bunch up on me in my regular size shoe feeling a little sloppy above the toebox (and half smaller size strangled my foot). The Speeds are just more form fitting above and around, but the material also has more give/plushness to it than the harder tpu uppers of the court ff4. I wear Superfeet carbon insoles for tennis for a low to the ground, firmer support. Something much bulkier/taller could be an issue in the Speeds. These Speeds have noticeably more cushioning in the heel compared to past versions.

Curious if you’ve tried the Head Revolt Pros. They were my favorite shoe for comfort and durability (holy hell the outsole lasts forever) and the only reason I switched to ASICS speeds was for an ultra-light speedy shoe, since quickness is my main priority while playing.

I meant the part near the ankle, my left insole is a bit higher so I need some higher support there.
The court FF3 is certainly quite spacious near the toebox, more than I'd need but never had issues with it.
