Diary of a Racketaholic

Funny you should mention that. I strung up the 95 with BK/GF and went out for about 30 minutes. Less crisp than full TB and less muted than full BK. Further feedback to come.

Excellent!

feel is that much better/flexier? I detected that a little bit but since I hit them separately and weeks apart fro one another I wasn’t 100 percent sure. The new one seemed to have a little more pop due to the little more firmness? And faster to swing? Seems like that’s the general take from most.

Yeah its a better feel to me. Less muted, more raw but more comfortable as well. Swing speed is a little faster in the 21 because the SWs seem to come in a bit lower. The 2018 stock is already at 322.

The flex really stands out on a big serve or forehand. Just feels magnificent there. Still has the Vc95 DNA - it's not like a prestige or anything, but it just has such a nice feel to it. Reminds me a bit of the vcore xi98.

Man this VC95 2018 version is dope.

The feel is just awesome in it with the full tour sniper. But the control I have over the ball is even a bit tighter than with the 21. Just a bit, but man, I am digging this thing. Glad I found another so I can roll with 2.

Worked on patterns and generating the 7/10 rally ball with no errors and it's just so easy with the 95s. I see why some people prefer the 2018 now. I have to add myself to that camp. Something about 62RA. It doesn't even play super soft like you may expect, but that extra little bit of bend just takes this thing to feel town without losing the traits of the 2021 version.

Would blacknight/greyfire be too muted of a setup in the 2021? I hated Cyclone Tour in it. Liked Tour Sniper. Really liked Element.

You're buying up all the 2018 and not leaving any for the rest of us!!!

I thought the 2018 lacked some of the pop that is found in the current gen.

Tried 1g at 12 in the VC95 today - surprisingly big SW impact based on feel (no SW1 here unfortunately lol). Was trying to open up top of stringbed a bit but didn't quite work how I wanted.

In better news, have tracked down a 2018 so I can see if I like it more too like @Power Player. I've actually got a 95D and SV95 too so will get these matched and strung up to compare the generations.

Lead at 12 didn't work for me either but 10/2 was exactly what I wanted.

Just to add to the pop - I am hitting very relaxed 60-70% balls majority of the time with the 2018 and the depth is absolutely perfect. Just feels automatic. So I barely use any energy to hit the ball with this frame - plenty of power for me. Of course I can do the same with the 21, but the 2018 just feels perfectly dialed in out of the box.

Round one of my Limoncello 300g vs 315g battle - held on indoor hard courts doing mainly drills and playing a set of doubles - goes to the 300g. As @tim-ay mentioned in his initial impressions, I did miss the weight in the handle on the 300g at the start but the more I played with it tonight, the more dialed in I got with it. I eventually stopped being so early to the ball and really appreciated the extra maneuverability the 300g offers and the wonders that does for overall feel. While it is by no means a "powerful" racket, it certainly gets way more free power than you would expect from a lighter, thin beam frame.

I was able to start altering my forehand by the end of the night between a flatter, penetrating ball and a more loopy, heavier topspin ball. I think the 315 would be better if your game is more flat, penetrating focused but the 300g holds up good enough on both accounts and really whips on well struck topspin balls.

Two handed topspin backhands felt great with the 315g previously but felt even easier with the 300g tonight. And I thought being able to really knife the backhand slice with the 300g's maneuverability was a big bonus. Volleys felt great with both. Again, the extra weight of the 315g could either help or hurt at the net depending your game. The 315g is a little more solid but the 300g holds its own just fine against a bigger ball at the net plus I was getting the racket in position quicker too.

I was able to get better pop on my first serve with the 300g, placement was easy, and slice serves felt great. I didn't get a chance to hit enough kickers to compare and contrast both frames.

Play test continues back on the green clay this Saturday but early results are promising. Overall, they are all great sticks and it's really just a matter of which version - 300g, 315g, or 325g - fits your game the best.

Round two on the green clay this morning also went to 300g. 315g never even made it out of bag!

The full bed of BK 1.23 felt awesome this morning as it’s in that sweet spot after the initial hour or so being a little boardie.

THBH was awesome on topspin and slices were also kniving really well. Topspin forehand had excellent feel, control, and power as well. Really felt like I could point and shoot and put great shape on the ball.

I was worried about the stability of the 300g on the clay but that 328 swing weight really helped with that. With two OGs and a dampener, I was at 331g all in which felt perfect in terms of maintaining maneuverability but still being plenty solid. Same held true on half volleys and volleys. My opponent hits big and heavy top off both wings and the 300g handled his pace and spin with ease. Return of serves were particularly good and easier to produce with the lighter but still stable frame.

also passed the kick serve test today as I was really able to move my serve around the box while altering between flat, slice, and kick. To be this early into hitting with a frame and feel in control of all of those options was a welcome surprise.

I ordered two 300g initially but left the plastic on one in case it didn’t work out but going to drop that one off to be strung shortly.

Hoping it’s not just the honeymoon period but think this might be the one for me for the foreseeable future!

full bed of 1.23 is so great in any of the PKs

but i’m on the opposite end of the emotional spectrum. lost first set and won second - but the second was an hour 20 min. we only had a few min left and had to play a 10 point tie break which i hate anyway. netted a match point at 10-9 and then double faulted at 11-12. i hate tennis, the florida humidity, and my doppios. haha. i’m freaking sick of the heat. refueling with tin and taco - and beer now. lots of beer.

Ugh, that’s the worst. Late summer FL humidity is a special kind of beast. Meanwhile here in greater Chicagoland, this might be the best outdoor tennis weather as it’s still warm but the humidity is mostly gone. Very comfortable out there early this morning.

Were you playing your Doppio or Limoncello today? Guessing Doppio given the specific shout out.

“One Bad Tuesday.”

The worst part about FL around now is it starts raining for days or even weeks at a time. So after a while you get so defeated by not playing tennis, that you actually miss the sickening humidity.

haha. so true. and then you hate it more when you get to play. i sat on one of those metal benches after the match talking with the guy for 10 min, got up and looked down and the giant sweat puddle had formed. next summer im going to the beach, being a drunk, and just getting fat.

@BPlain - it was a doppio day. not their fault, i just sucked at important moments and a lot was dead legs/fitness. the guy i played had more in the tank- it’s that simple.

@JGads - yeah. bad day. im stringing up a G and a top banana for practice tomorrow. ha.

Given how good BK is in the Top Banana, I have been harboring thoughts that it could really goat in the 7g. Do I bring it out of hibernation? Hmm.

My god I am the only person who does not get BK. I'm putting it in the 21Vc95 and ill cross it with greyfire. I need to see if this string can deliver for me in some format.

Has it not worked for you in the past? If it weren't for BK, I wouldn't even be hitting with the VCore.

Nope, I have never gelled with it. I am an ALU style string fan. So Tour Bite, Tour Sniper, RS Lyon, S7T..etc.

The 1.18 was not bad in the Top Banana, but it got a little launchy for me pretty fast.

I have some packs laying here though, so I need to use them at some point.

Can’t speak to the 1.18 but the primary thing I love about the 1.23 is it’s non-launchiness, it’s predictability. Great match for the pop of the Top Banana.

It might be the 1.18 that can explain it. The heavier gauge has been predictable as can be for me.

yeah 1.23 is awesome in 16x20 patterns. i get worried about 1.18 in any string, but obvi some are stellar. it’s just so hit or miss.

@JGads - i strung up a G with BK. can’t wait until tomorrow (whoa , Hendrix song, kinda). A top banana with BK also.

my bag for tomorrow is a rainbow of Kinetic. limoncello, a doppio, a top banana, and a G thang. i need to sort out my miscues for fall. i’m already over my after match depression. tacos and beer are a cure all.

Definitely let me know how the BK feels/plays in the G. Gotta believe it should be pretty good.

I want to try the GW hybrid in these PKs to see what that’s like but unfortunately bought a thinner 1.22 GW set not the thicker one, so gonna save it I think.

I got in around 4 hours over 3 sessions with SOZ. First it was strung with a round pretty firm grey poly that came from ZUS. It played well and i can tell it had a good connected feel in spite it being a firm frame. Even with a stiff string, i did not detect any complaints from my arm. After that first hit, i got it restrung with some BK @51lbs and i added 4g under the butt cap. I wanted a string i was pretty familiar with and a bit softer then that grey string. Now we are talking! BK brought in a bit more pocketing which was very welcome but again this is a more direct response frame and not a flexy frame by any stretch. Now it is predictable and trustworthy on ground strokes with ease of being able to rally @75% power and hit deep with a heavy ball. This is certainly a pleaner who really had ambitions to be a tweener but alas Zues wouldn't allow it. Comparing string beds, the main's spacing seems really similar to doppio. Crosses are much wider so it gives heavy spin more jump off the ground and it was pretty effective. Versatility is there to be had and i was surprised how well it drove the ball as well going more flatish.

Beam is a bit thicker than doppio so suspect 22 or 22.5, it is not thick enough to be in babs beam land. The feel and any form of touch shot is genuinely good. I loved volleying with the stick just had good stability, mobility, authority and touch that made my life easier. BK just compliments this frame nicely giving it a sightly softer touch but balanced and predictable. I got in some practice sets and the versatility extends to serves and returns. Serves clicked right away although my toss was rusty in the beginning after my hiatus but started clicking after first session. I went out in between and got an hour of serve practice to remind myself ;)

The most profound gap in between SOZ and the doppio comes down to volleying were SOZ is just hands down the better stick. Grounds strokes while they do things a bit differently but they are not far off in effectiveness. Doppio big whip and versatile launch angle and SOZ a more stable not quite as whippy but not frappuccino either and very versatile launch angle still. I would not call it whippy per se but it is more whippy than the frap. Launch versatility i'd even go with SOZ more as i can really drive but when i go higher with heavy spin it really brings the ball down and kicks high with good weight. It also shows up in kick serves were again this wouldn't be a doppio hallmark. Doppio is more flat good targeting and side spin. SOZ can do an excellent kick serve kicking up and wide. Now I also got BK on my 2nd ZUS stick which is also a 100 with a 16x20 string pattern. This one is called the striker and the one i have been playing with is the custom.

Forget about it and start fresh tomorrow. Yesterday sucked here too. I got run around by a better player and at one point slid off the court and got my foot trapped under the fence. Literally couldn’t extricate myself without help.

I've added some lead to my prestige (mp) to fool around a bit and see how it feels to hit. Definitely heavier than what I would normally play with. It's a chunky boy but it should be fun. It'll force me to be smooth.

Any of you madmen crossed BK with Element?

Didn't you want to try Alu / Element?

The Fukky's video from yesterday mentioned some Wilson players and their Pro Labs racquets along with their string and tension.
Gael and Madison UP18x20 (UT), alu power 125 / element 125 @ 45#

Kyle Edmunds and Opelka six.one 95, alu rough 125 / sensation16 @ 45#

Khachanov BP 18x20, alu 125 / 4g 125 @ 45#

(Sorry if this was common knowledge...)

Played around with Swingtool to get some approx SW measurements - they seem pretty accurate.

Two VC95s:

- 345g / 312mm balance / 321 SW (Poly Tour Strike 1.25)
- 341g / 310mm balance / 311 SW (Poly Tour Fire 1.20)

These were approx matched (weight + balance) before, interesting the difference that a thicker, heavier string can make (some might be frame difference too).

I've tweaked the second one to see if it changes how much I currently prefer the Strike set-up:
- 345g / 310mm balance / 318 SW (Poly Tour Fire 1.20)

Quite the rabbit-hole I'm in here but starting to understand why I was struggling with thinner gauge polys (the BK I tried was 1.18).

Yeah like I said, I ordered ALU on the discount and have it coming. It will go in the 2018 VC95 when it arrives.

I have BK sitting here and will try that in the 21vc95.

Very interesting strings and tension setup - seems like a solid combo for sure.

Has somebody tried the pure aero vs and the blade v7 16x19? I currently use the blade but i want something a bit whipier and easier on the defense, but mantaining some of the qualities of the blade on the offense, i been thinking about the vs, wondering how peoples experiences have been with it

I have to say that Yonex has hit a home run with the whole VCore Pro Line! The VCP 97 310 is definitely a great all around racquet for any player 3.5 or above! I have been playing for over 30 years and played with most of the top players frames. Yonex really made a player's frame in the VCP 97 310 that is super user-friendly and not demanding like alot of the other thin beam racquets on the market. It plays bigger than a 97 and the sweetspot is huge and forgiving. Power and spin come easy. The control is fantastic even with a synthetic string. This is a great frame for players with arm problems! The low RA of 60 is the cherry on top along with the plush response. I have not played with a Yonex frame for a while but I am really impressed! The headlight balance makes it very whippy and maneuverable. My one handed topspin backhand and serve have come alive! I was using the Phantom 100P for a while and was working way to hard as well tiring in long matches. I also used the Blade v7 98 16 x 19 prior to the Phantom 100P and also have to say that the Yonex VCP 97 310 is head and shoulders above the Blade in playability. The Yonex is so more predictable and stable over the Blade v7 98 16 x 19. I am selling my Phantom 100P frames and buying a second Yonex VCP 97 310! Kudos to Yonex for making such a quality frame!

I have. BK 1.28 mains and Element 1.25 crosses in the TC95 at 47.4 lbs. Loved it. I played my best TC95 tennis with that. I currently have Hawk Touch 1.25/Element 1.25 in there but BK mains worked better. Next restring it will be that setup again, but I'll probably up the tension 2 or 3 lbs.
Sorry couldn’t resist. But I think 47.4lb is a rather interesting figure. :)

Just bought my second Yonex VCP 97 310! I have not been this excited about a new frame in very long time! My 5 Phantom 100P are up for sale and 2 have sold so far!!

Awesome I can try that exact setup, which sounds like a great plan.

I served my A-- off today with the 2018 VC95. Just big flat bombs with some sliders mixed in to tweak things up. Full Tour Bite is quite nice but I want to go a little easier on my arm so Ill hybrid with Element. Also full TB can die without warning at the worst times.

Pretty much settling in on the 2018 Vc95 as my main frame, with the 21 95 in the mix when needed. The VCP 97 will stay in the bag, and Id like to have a showdown at some point with the Limoncello.

Sounds like a real winner. It's too bad I already have so many frames I like right now, but still, I will probably end up ordering a matched pair of these at some point in the next 12 months...

It is! I had no intention of buying the VCP97 310 until I saw a few reviews along with the specs. I really enjoyed the Phantom 100P for a while but the SW started to wear on my arm a bit and was getting exhausted in longer matches and hitting sessions. The combination of the balance, manageable SW and the low RA and have really made this frame a winner. It's surprisingly easy to use and has a great balance of power and control! For a 97 sq inch frame, it has a huge sweetspot and very forgiving. This frame could appeal to intermediate players also. I would almost call a mix of a player- tweener frame.
