Did hillbillies people not know what a helicopter was?

Legend
I just started watching Beverly Hillbillies TV Show for the first time. I have no idea what year the story is (I know it's broadcast in the 60's). In season 1 episode 1 the Grandma told the family she saw a big bird, when in fact it's a helicopter from an Oil company. Were there really rural people in the US who did not have any idea what a helicopter was?

Hillbillies are the butt of the joke that the show is built on, so helicopters are just the first of many modern things that the backwoodsmen will face.

It was a comedy. The laughs come from them being fish out of water in swanky Beverly Hills.
My favorite episode was when Leo Durocher(who is in the baseball Hall of Fame) saw Elly May pitch 90plus MPH fastballs and said sadly: "Ellie May has a couple of talents that a Dodgers uniform can't hide."

That was a good episode. If only the commissioner had legalized the possum ball ( a baseball rubbed in possum fat), Jethro would have made the Dodgers team. :(

HillBillly People..............................??? I never knew The Ark of the Covenant rested in Kentucky! Not in Ethiopia!

Don't mess with Granny or a man named Jed.

"Come and listen to my story
'Bout a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer,
Barely kept his family fed.
And then one day
He was shootin' at some food,
And up through the ground came a-bubblin' crude.

Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

Well the first thing you know
Ol' Jed's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said "Jed move away from there".
Said "California's the place you outta be".
So they loaded up the truck
And they moved to Beverly.

Hills that is, Swimming pools, movie stars.

THE BEVERLEY HILLBILLIES!!!"
