Hi I'm Ray

Professional
Original post had a lot more details because I didn't want to be vague or leave out a detail that might cause some confusion, but ppl said it was too long so its shortened:

Played two doubles sets, partner was a 3.5 girl who hadn't played for 6 months and was having trouble. Opponents were two guys 4.5 & 4.0, who hit 95% of their shots to the girl and were pretty much attacking her the whole time. Keep in mind these are just casual drop in games.
After the two sets, walked over to a tennis buddy & briefly talked about how our games went. I said "I played over there, those two guys spent the whole time "smashing" the ball at my girl partner who hadn't played in 6 months. I'm right here, they need to man up." His response, "Oh... yeah." Then we were rallying with another guy, there were 3 of us waiting for a 4th random person to show so we can play doubles. The guy on the other side of the court was injured, so we hit the ball to the middle to him but he was just pushing it back very lazily over and over, so after a couple of shots I'll finish the rally point off in the open court. After 3-4 rallies tennis bud suddenly says, "You know what, I think I'm gonna take call it a night." And leaves. It was still early, I thought it was out of the ordinary for him.
Buddy is a 3.5, and earlier was partnered with another guy VS a guy & girl team 4.0/4.0. I figured he probably hit all his shots to the slightly weaker girl and what I said might've offended him, that or it might've been finishing off the lazy rally shots.

Just trying to figure out if I said or did something wrong that might've offended the 3.5.

When you shook hands at the net, you should have given the opponent the "middle finger" and told him he smelled mardy.

Btw, later that night I played against the same girl who was my partner and the 4.5 guy, my new partner was another girl also 3.5. I directed all my attacks to the guy and only hit slow shots or moon balls to my previous parter since she was having a hard time that night. Most of the shots went to my partner but if I got a short ball or weak reply I'd smack it at the guy. The other guy still attacked my partner but she was able to redirect it to the girl her level and keep it there. We won 7-5. I totally suck at doubles.

the Stepanek? lol. Na, I save that for the guys who do worse. Was playing doubles another time, my partner was an old guy who is pretty good but has bad legs & can't run. The two guys we were playing against are pretty decent, except one of them is well know as being an annoying trash talking a$$hole. This guy was hitting countless dropshots one after another against my old guy partner's slow serve, knowing he couldn't get to them from the baseline. Most ppl only do this when they are losing the game desperate for points, AND they promptly apologize. This guy was actually laughing at the old guy the whole time. I got pissed off and called the guy out as pu**y on the court, and added that no one does that ****. He had no reply.

You're very intolerant of how other people play. You're bothered that they hit to the weaker player, who happens to be female, and you seem bothered that "everyone" on those courts is a pusher. Complaining about other people having a different style or strategy of play is not mature.

Wait, were you hitting only with the guy's partner? maybe the 3.5 guy left because he didn't feel like watching two people play. That's probably what I'd do

a 3.5 girl that hadn't played or 6 months

Is this another veiled reference to the Stepaneks?!

Well not everyone, but the vast majority yes. I did say it works well out there. I had to up my consistency a lot to play against ppl who hit 5+ moonballs in a row. But doing this during casual rallies too? I don't know about that.

Seems like the majority of votes is going to option #2. If the weaker player is a guy and the match up is close then alright. The poll was to figure out if that was probably what I shouldn't have done in this situation so that seems to be the answer.

But going a little off topic, would you guys think its fine for two guys of a higher level to hit about 95% of their shots to and attack a girl of a lower level who is obviously not playing well that day?

This is what happened:

I played 2 doubles matches, me + a 3.5 girl that hadn't played or 6 months VS 2 guys - probably a 4.5 and 4.0. During warm up rallies the girl was hitting 30% + out, she was obviously having timing issues from a long break. During the match I gave them a bit of trouble the first 2 sets then the two guys hardly hit any balls to me, they attacked the girl about 95% of the time, hitting the ball "hard" at her, even smashes. If I applied any pressure to them they always redirect the ball at my partner. I lost my share of points when they attacked short balls at me so its not like hitting to me meant losing points for them. We lost 2-6 and something like 3or 4 - 6. The girl kept appologizing between points and I'd just smile and say its fine, don't worry about it. I thought the guys were little weenies for attacking the girl the whole time. Its just a casual game.

After the matches I walked over to my tennis buddy, I only know him on the courts, not friends outside of that, and asked them how his match went. I forgot what he said but I said "I played over there, those two guys spent the whole time "smashing" the ball at my girl partner who hadn't played in 6 months. I'm right here, they need to man up."
His response, "Oh... yeah."

This guy is about a 3.5. I remember he was playing a match against a guy and a girl, both better than him, his random partner is decent. Afterwards I thought maybe he was hitting the majority of his shots to the slightly weaker female partner, as I've seen him do that before, which is fine in this case because she is a stronger player than him. I didn't watch his game so I don't know what went on. The guy and girl left, so now are 3 of us, me & the 3.5 guy on one side, his partner who looks about 25 years old, on the other side. After a few min of hitting I asked if his partner is injured because I'm only seeing him walk, never run, and he confirms it. Unfortunately, his partner is a pusher, just like everyone else is on those extremely slow hard courts. It works well on those courts, they don't give you any pace, they give themselves plenty of time to recover and know its tough to get much speed out there, they just wait for you to make a mistake. But they even do during casual hitting rallies, which really is not enjoyable - I hit the ball right in the middle so he doesn't have to run and he just pushes it back over and over. So after every few shots I'll hit to the open court to finish the rally point off. He lets some shots go and tries to get to others. Then the 3.5 guy suddenly says, "You know what, I think I'm gonna take call it a night." And leaves. It was still early, I thought it was out of the ordinary for him.

I figure I probably said something that offended him, or did something wrong. What's your take?

Keep in mind these are just casual drop in games.
Run that by me again?

Casual sets and they go after the chick to ensure a win sounds like a d!ck move to me. I probably would have gotten pretty pissed and called the guys chicken-**** to their faces, casual games are meant to be more fun.

You may have bored him off the court. Think about it.

Need a cliff notes version, there are too many details of who played which player and their levels. But, in summary, play should be challenging and fun, and make sure all the players are involved.

I cannot follow long posts. Please summarize it as either a Nadal vs Federer discussion or a Azarenka shrieking discussion.

Nadal and Djoko challenge Vika and Fed to a "fun" doubles match. They start and Rafa and Djoko see that Vika's play is a bit off, soooo they start hitting everything they can at her including easy sitter shots. This pisses Fed off and he decides to rant about in on TT! Is Fed right in thinking that Djoko and Rafa are jerks and talking **** to others?

First off, let me just say that this is a great post.

Secondly, can you provide a more detailed description of what happened? Please don't leave anything out, even if it has nothing to do with the question, or the poll. The more extraneous information, the better.

By the way, I'm leaning towards...you did nothing to offend the 3.5 guy, he just had to leave for his photography class.

Am I right?

Wrong.

The 3.5 guy left to sleep with "Ray's" doubles partner. She was happy he could hold up his end of the deal and not be such a whiney b*tch.

Ray has decided to go back to "playing singles".

Whoa, I know what happened here ...

Were you breathing loudly or blinking?

I hate when other people do these things.

Geez man, another 1-2 liner meaningless post that no one could give a rat's *** about. I think 4000 posts is enough for ya. I'm pretty sure we know who's really playing "singles" here. :-D

Yeah thats how I see it. But the majority of votes here point to most ppl thinking its alright. Next time someone asks how my game went I'll just say win/lose/"fine."

Did the OP comment about this "attacking the weaker opponent relentlessly" issue during the match?

The 3.5 guy probably took your tone a bit different, but - to be honest - who cares?

Seemed like everyone was tense during that "casual game".

Nah, they do that often out there so it wasn't new. The girl kept trying to apologize between points whever she lost one, but I told her its totally fine.

I've been keeping track. It's actually 3995 posts that no one gives a rat's ass about - and 5 times he posted the lyrics for Jesus Was a Capricorn.

That song kicks ass!

Jesus was a Capricorn, he ate organic foods.
He believed in love and peace and never wore no shoes.
Long hair, beard and sandals and a funky bunch of friends.
Reckon they'd just nail him up if He come down again.

'Cos everybody's got to have somebody to look down on.
Who they can feel better than at anytime they please.
Someone doin' somethin' dirty, decent folks can frown on.
If you can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me.

Get back, John!

Egg Head's fussin' Red Neck's cussin' hippies for their hair.
Others laugh at straights who laugh at freaks who laugh at squares.
Some folks hate the whites who hate the blacks who hate the clan.
Most of us hate anything that we don't understand.

If you can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me.

Help yourself, brother.
Help yourself, Gentlemen.
Help yourself Reverend.

Nice diversion

That was nice, but let's get back on topic.

So last week I was playing some casual doubles, and then after, I hit a bit, but then I forgot I had a photography class starting at 4:00, so since we were hitting two on one, I said I was going to call it a night.

So, did I do or say anything wrong in this situation?

How do I add a poll to someone else's thread?

This really depends on the subject of your photography class that evening.

If you were photographing nude 19 year old sex kittens that evening, then I think you did the right thing. But if you were studying Mapplethorpe that evening, then you really did something wrong.

Yeah, I'm right!

It was more like the first one, only she was older, and also a male. Also, he was posing with no pants.

Can I get banned for saying "no pants?"

I'm not that good at photography yet, probably only a 3.5 at this point, and I felt the model was attacking me relentlessly.

If I was the weakest one there, was it fair of him to constantly point it in my direction? Is this post going to get deleted?

I did say I felt what he was doing was "unmanly."

Did I say or do anything wrong in this situation?

Who is driving this thread, anyway. Just because it is in the Odds and Ends section, does not mean we should not care for it like we do the other threads. I have a feeling some posters are not taking this thread seriously enough.

I"m mainly looking at you, Mr. Beatles song poster; I refuse to call you by your "computer robot" type name. Why couldn't you choose something good, like a sentence, or a pick up line, like "Hi I'm Ray." That gets them every time.
