Diego Schwartzman: I don't want to be in the same side of the draw next time with Rafa

Diego basically saying give me someone else next time no more Nadal before final:). He said maybe Nole not Nadal next time:) I think he is really unlucky about drawing with Rafa all the time when he goes deep. Also tough and never easy for Nadal.
Nadal lost his consecutive set streaks 2 times against Diego.

Before match i thought Diego always faces Nadal last years and i checked in 2019 he lost in the second round. Last 4 years Diego made 2 QF 1 SF in RG and he faced Rafa all the time.

In 2018 QF: Diego vs Nadal Diego up 1 set and break in this match i tought Nadal would gonna lose that match. After rain Nadal won in the end in 4. I think rain saved Rafa.
In 2020 SF: Nadal won in straight sets including last set tie break. In the tie break Nadal won easily but i think this match was his most difficult match last year even though Sinner was the closest to take a set.
In 2021QF: You all know what happened today.

So what do you guys think? I think obviously he would have great chance against other top players and i think he can beat them ofc he can lose too. I think he would have gone further atleast one time if he not faced Nadal.

My thoughts about today's match

Second set Diego played well(first too) I don't think Nadal was playing bad. He served bad especially with double fault i must say in the third Diego looked better and was playing better until Nadal broke him. Nadal served really well on the third i think that was the key. After Rafa broke in the third he played better until the end.

But i think last set Diego played bad he was hitting many UE. So it was more about him but overall Diego played great 3 sets. I think Diego is one of the few players who pushes Nadal that hard last years.

I think Nadal would have had some other problems if he face Djokovic, Zverev or Tsitsipas(specially his forehand) but i don't think none of these guys can defend like Diego.

Well, he's got zero wins against Nole or Roger, but he can hold his own against the remaining NextGen (Tsitsipas: 1-1, Zverev: 3-2). What do you say, TPTB, why don't you give Diego a kinder draw next time?

What difference does that make ? He would have to play him in the final anyway. And he’s even harder to beat in a final.

Interesting food for thought. Schwartzman now has a 4 year stretch where he's lost to Rafa 3/4 years at RG. Thiem's best 4 year stretch also sees him lose to Rafa 3/4 years. Sets won by each man: 2 for Schwartzman 1 for Thiem. Schwartzman also has a prime to prime H2H win over Thiem. Maybe we're underrating the Argentine as a clay court threat?

If Novak had to play Rafa in the quarterfinal last year he could have lost #1 to Med already.

Making a slam final is a big difference in points and therefore rankling. Could make Diego a top 8 seed at masters and slams, which makes his draw easier.

He is just a "tough" match up for Rafa. I use that term loosely. He is a solid ball striker and a good mover. He seems to have good anticipation of where to be on the court at all times. In spite of that Rafa still beats him like a drum.

Maybe? Of course they're doing it :-D. Lots of people here seem annoyed because a manlet got to be a pro a they didn't (?). Even his win over Zverev at the USO was more convincing than Thiem's.

Schwartzman has never approached Thiem's semi final level on a HC though but generally I agree with you. Schwartzman's been one of the best clay courters in the world for a while now.

I don't think he is better than Thiem. But he is a better player than most people think about him.

It is what is. At least he tries, everyone else just rolls over.

Sad, he's definitely one of those guys who could have won a French or two if Rafa had picked soccer instead of tennis.

Ya think? You bozos have written him off with such clever jokes as "Shortsman" (hur durr durr) for years

Has Thiem ever approached Roddick's mythical semi-final level on a HC?
