Difference between Roddick and Nadal...?

ogruskie

Professional
To me, they both seem to be muscularly built. Roddick is a big guy, and so is Nadal. What makes Nadal a much quicker player? While Andy struggles to get to some balls because of his large mass, Rafa zips across court like a bird.

There will be some people who disagree that Nadal isn't as big as Roddick. Perhaps. To ME, at least, they look the same.

well difference eh?

no. of slams.
plays wif diff hands.
one american, the other european.
no. of titles altogether.
no. of wins against federer.
motion of serves.
one wears a hat the other doesnt.
one nike, the other lacoste.
one has blue babolat, the other yellow.
baseliner, counterpuncher.
one born on clay, the other hard.
diff in height and weight.
diff in serve speed.
diff thickness in amrs.
blonde gf, black haired gf.

The difference is massive

I think it comes down to "approach to the game." Roddick developed quickly utilizing a rather one-dimensional approach: Kill the serve, kill the forehand. Rafa's game had a similar one-dimensionality to it, initially: outlast, outlast, outlast, by virtues of incredible topspin.

Their games are still in the same echelon, obviously: if you're top 10 in the world, you've got some skills that would put everyone to shame. However, I think they've both approached the development of on-court tactics differently...discuss.

The biggest difference is that Roddick plays completely defensive, while Nadal can flatten out his shots to play aggressive tennis.

There is also the serve, where Nadal will never come close to Roddick.

huh?

you're saying Roddick is less aggressive than Nadal? you do realize his lone grand slam came from being as aggressive as he possibly could, right?

evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u7D3iQxlUo

trying to push federer off the court more often than not.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClmzprEucT4

nadal trying to keep in many points long enough to get aggressive, rather than being so directly from the start (he did that plenty as well, but his bread and butter is defense)

Now tell me Nadal is not hitting the juice LOL.. Good lord man.. Look at that kid's body. I still have and will always have my suspicisions about that kid. Especially the way he operates like a machine on that court

You've obviously have never seen a professional athlete in your life, because Nadal is nothing special at all. Most amateur body builders can sculpt a body like Nadal.

I think Nadal had 33 groundstroke winners to Roddick's 2 in their Davis Cup match? In Dubai, where Roddick supposedly had his 2003 forehand back, Nadal still had twice as many forehand winners, and obviously more from the backhand as well. In Indian Wells last year, Nadal was ahead of Roddick in forehand winners by around 16 to 2. If that's not a clear case of aggressive vs all topspin/defense, I don't know what is.

have you ever been to a gym?

easily you will see guys who are not on juice more ripped than nadal

gym time + simple nutrition along with protein post workout supplements can make anyone (yes, even you, my ignorant friend) look like that

Supplements?? I mean "legal" supplements? overpriced GNC crap? LOLGive me a break.. Ive taken countless supplements. As many do who works out int he gym. Yess I have been to the gym countless times and that type of build makes me have my suspicions. And Ive known people who juice. And no.. Most arent nearly as RIPPED as Nadal. Sorry. Most guys at the gym who and even "live at the gym" do not have the kind of definition. Most are bulky boys with lots of mass. I cant "assume" Nadal may be juicing based on his body and the way he plays on the court? I cant be prove he does, Can you PROVE he DOESNT?
Strength Training for Tennis vs. Steroids in Tennis

Here are the affects of steroids:

1. Enhanced Muscle growth
2. strength
3. speed
4. agility
5. increased overall performance
6. bunch of negative stuff like hair growth, making people mean, high blood pressure, acne, gynecomastia, and an array of other negative affects...

Here are the affect of tennis specific weight training:

1. Enhanced Muscle Growth
2. Increased Strength
3. Increased Speed
4. Improved Agility
5. Improved overall performance
6. Zero negative side effects other than the basic risk of injury of
training with improper form etc.

Nadal coincides with many categories here.

And when youre making millions a year, You can afford masking agents. Steroids run rampant in any sport. YEs EVEN THE OLYMPICS. Stop being in DENIAL. Its possible Nadal may be clean as a bell.. But like I said, I have my suspicions. So Nadal's work ethic has exceed everyone else's in history? Why hasnt anyone in history had a body like that? I dont by that he just works "harder" than anyone else has in history. Oh nadal says he's clean we are supposed to believe him. I see. He may not be doing anabolic roids. But EPO and blood doping. Possibly

I think the *********s and Federphiles enjoy just arguing with me for the sake of arguing and never learn to think "Outside the box.:

The Davis Cup match was skewed due to the fact that it was played on clay, a surface that Roddick utterly sucks on and Nadal is utterly dominant on.

In Dubai, Roddick did have his ripping forehand back, but numbers really never tell the story of that match. Nadal may have had more winners, but it was very obvious who was on the offense and who was on the defense. Still though, Roddick did not rip his forehand very often throughout the match. He just played more of a Gilles Simon type game where he randomly ripped a forehand just to keep Nadal on the defense.

Indian Wells, that's just Roddick playing like an idiot. I'm pretty sure he did his best kamikaze impression that day, suicide bombing the net so many times, while also looping his forehand like no other.

Also, you have to understand that Nadal is an incredible defender and very fast. He makes everyone's winner category look smaller. This is especially the case with Roddick, for who for some odd reason just loves to loop forehands like he's Bjorn Borg at the French Open.

They have different levels of talent, speed, effort, ability, etc...

There's always someone better... and once you're at the top, all you can go is down.

...but they're still hundreds of years better than any of you.

On another note, I think Roddick was No. 1 younger than Nadal was when he finally got it.

Rafa's name was allegedly on the list of Fuentes' clients. Several European newspapers who have seen names on the list say Nadal's name is on there.

Fuentes himself admitted to working with all sorts of athletes - cycling, track and field, soccer, and tennis. He is upset that only the cyclists seem to be getting named. As you said, only 50 or so names have been released, it is ridiculous that there has not been more of an investigation into this.

The Spanish government and courts have tried to sweep it under the rug, and none of the international doping authorities or the WADA have been able to get them to release the full list to them. That only makes it more suspicious to me that Nadal's name IS on the list - why else have they been so adamant in hiding what is in the 600-page document (which allegedly lists all the names)?

Wrong, it was one French Newspaper that is well known for making up rumors. No other European Newspaper has ever reported anything on Nadal and the usage of illegal drugs. Again, get your facts straight you imbecile.

Canas was cleared and did not use a steroid or a blood doping agent. He was banned for the usage of a masking drug that was used with an insignificant amount, and it was proven by a International Court that an ATP doctor had prescribed the medicine to Canas.

You clearly have never read these forums before, because I don't think I have ever defended Nadal so many times before. Most of my accusations and insults tend to be troll posts, but obviously you're thick headed and dense mind can't comprehend that maybe Nadal just has far superior technique and is physically stronger than his competition.

Plus, the only drugs that could be any use are HGH and EPO. However, both of these are fairly easy to catch with the right types of screening. Considering Nadal is the world #1, I'm sure they put him through more rigorous types of screening than most players. HGH and EPO both help create natural hormones in the body, some effects are increased muscle strength, better cardiovascular ability, and faster recovery periods. However, it is quite easy to detect abuse, as anyone with a brain could realize that a high level amount of HGH or EPO is a red flag.

If you break over a certain amount of HGH or EPO, that's a big red flag of 99% blood doping or use of HGHs. Also, HGHs today are generally synthetic. There are still many big flags that are all set off by many of the screening tests.

roddick played spectacular that match. and it baffled me how federer was still able to pull it off in three. pretty impressive match, with no breaks in the first two sets.

Nadal is not that strong. Yes he is stronger then most tennis players but most of them aren't really that strong. There are tons of people stronger then Nadal. You are just making false accuseations which I find pathetic. They drug test him all the time. He doesn't like alcohol is a big thing as I think alcohol can really hurt your fitness. Nadal grew up on clay. A surface that requires a lot of endurance.

How can Nadal's right arm is thinner than Serena's?

Felt sorry for Roddick after that match, he played brilliantly and I thought he was too overpowering even for Federer. Those forehands were insane, but he was too emotional in that match I think. Uncontrolled aggression is not good. Federer was tactical and patient as usual.

Against Federer, I guess you can't be too aggressive and not too passive either. A combination of both, that's what Rafa does against him all the time.

All of the catagories you list are very achievable without banned substances, however you are wrong on point 6 there are side effects to every drug legal or not.Tennis players are checked and to my knowledge its pretty rare for performence enhancing tests to come back positive. Many of the blood doping type things you listed won't always help a tennis player.
I'm not a particular Nadal fan but having read and watched some general stuff on his off season training and general work rate i'd say he does do more than those before him or many of his peers. Therefore he would logically be more "sculpted" than most. You can easilly target tennis specific muscles and i've never found anything that says things like blood boosting really helps as tennis is quite anerobic.(and not in the way of 100 and 200 m sprints wither.)
Now i would like to know what paper this is that you say reports the names of those suspected and why the Spanish authorities wont give up details to WADA, Spanish sports are like all Olympic countires under the durastiction of WADa and other sport specific testing regimes.(you got a link to the article?-thanks)
Techinically you should forget the Canas results as they were overturned/cleared.

AS for the original, Nadal just has more to his game a plan B and C if you will.

biggest difference between the 2 is mental

Nadal rarely loses 2 players he's not suppose 2 lose 2 unlike Roddick:Kohli in Australia this year;Dancevic last summer;the list goes on

Nadal's backhand is stronger than Roddick's.You can pound on Roddick's backhand

Nadal who just 2 years ago looked like a chump in Australia when he played Gonzo kept getting passed;has since then made huge strides in his approach shots and net game by playing doubles. He volleys better than Roddick

both guys have huge forehands,Nadal's forehand is a lot more aggressive now than it was 2 years ago.Roddick has a huge forehand also;he's got a lot of spin on his forehand

Nadal moves so much better in defense and especially in transition compared 2 Roddick

Nadal is faster and has better footwork

Roddick has bigger serves no question, but Roddick's serves are being blocked back at him but Nadal's serves have improved heaps. He seldom double faults and he has more aces.

Nadal overall has the better return of serves and with him winning Wimbledon and making the semis in Australia and NY;he's got plenty of time 2 improve his game;Roddick is a hard court specialist while Nadal is turning out 2 be an all-surface one

That's funny! I can't believe you called Nadal, Nam's hero. Nothing could be further from the truth. But, it seems he does have a lot of evidence to the contrary regarding the doping allegations of Nadal, Canas, and other Argentinians. I agree with Nam on this one and think it's very unfair how some players are targeted, especially when you consider the consequences dealt out by country.

For some reason the Argentines have been in the cross-hairs of the doping officials. The only tennis players that I can name that have been suspended for doping are Argentines and Petr Korda.

It's just unfair that Canas got crucified when the ATP made the mistake, not him. How is Canas suppose to know about HTC, a relatively unknown drug?

I never bought into that story, especially knowing that the ATP doctor gave it to him. That made no sense at all. Had he taken it away from the tournament, I can see people being skeptical, but the ATP doctor? That was a joke!

I dont get GameSampras logic regarding doping. Just because we cant prove that Nadal is innocent, he is guilty of doping. How ridiculous does that sound? I suspect that Federer is gay with Wawrinka becuase of their Beijing Olympics celebration. You have no evidance to prove that Federer is straight, so can i assume that he is gay? Geeez.

When did I ever say Nadal is guilty of doping?? Did I say that? I said I have my suspicions. Thats what I said. Another guy putting words into my mouth.

Lets see:

Nadal moves light years better
Nadal returns serve better
Nadal has a much better forehand considering Roddick's isnt anywhere what it once was
Nadal has a much better backhand
Nadal even volleys better and he approaches smartly rather then at dumb times like Roddick

I dont think the biggest difference is mental. Of course Nadal is mentally tougher but that is only because he is one of the mentally toughest players in history. Roddick himself is very mentally though and in fact has to be to be the overachiever alot of people dont realize he is, especialy considering he doesnt even use some of his weapons properly.

No, you said that because I cannot prove Nadal is not doping, therefore, Nadal must dope. Those were your words.

Agreed. Roddick is all serve. Yes it can get him some big victories against top players on fast surfaces but he still wouldn't be considered better on fast surfaces. Dubai came out of nowhere considering all the losses he had before that to top players.
