Differences between 16x19 vs 16x20 string pattern?

    What is going on in the racket manufacturer's thinking when they make a frame a 16x20 over a 16x19 or 16x18? What pros and cons?

  2. The difference is one string. Usually it is head shape that dictates this disceptency. For example, Fischer rackets had a pretty long and narrow head shape, and a 16 x 20 pattern. Wilson rackets are wider and shorter, and they are the ones that more often have 16 x 18 or 16 x 19 patterns as of late. If a Wilson racket has 20 mains, then it also has 18 mains to complement.

    I thought having a 16 x 20 pattern would be a good compromise between 16 x 18/19 and 18 x 20. But it is so rare for some reason. I wish there would have a medium-flex racket (~RA 63) with this string pattern and a medium head shape to boot, something right in between Wilson and Head. Does anyone know what kinds of rackets fill this niche? I usually only have the opportunity to play Wilson and Head, which are night and day.

    The Wilson HTour, H5, and H6 have a 16x20 pattern

    that 1 string can make a big difference though.

    Take Wilson for example, that 20th cross string is at the tip of the head, and that helps to prevent from snapping the strings on that rare (hopefully LOL) shank. :lol:
  5. Great point, Matt. Come to think of it, maybe it is a reason why the Tour 90 has the bottom cross so low. I think on like the second point of a US Open match against Korda, Sampras broke a string because he hit a return off-center. For most players, having strings close to the frame means more shock on off-center hits, but for Sampras, that same shot otherwise results in a snapped or horribly frayed string!

    I thought it was also a good thing to have any damper that much lower and out of the way of the hitting area.
