Dimensions of Bare Racquet Handles

@Kalin measured some bare handles in another thread and I thought it would be useful to put those all in one place.

Do you enjoy playing with a wide variety of racquets but have a preferred grip size? Are you thinking about changing brands but have heard the grip is more square or rectangular? If you have a preferred leather grip this will be useful to maintaining a consistent grip size in racquet hoarding.

Grip Brand Model Year
Width (bevel 1 to 5) x Height (bevel 3 to 7)

#3 Yonex Tour G 2014
32.8mm x 28.5mm

#4 Babolat APD 2012

33.7mm x 29.3mm

#4 Dunlop F2.0 Tour
33.8mm 29.5mm

#4 Prince Original Graphite Oversize (current)
32.3mm x 29.5mm

#4 Wilson Jack Kramer Autograph Speedflex
33.5mm x 29.2mm

#4 Wilson Pro Staff 95 2013
33.3mm x 29.5mm

#4 Wilson RF97 2014 #4
33.2mm x 28.7

#5 Wilson Jack Kramer Midsize
34mm x 30.2mm

Brands have changed shapes over time and more info gives us a better idea of your accuracy and manufacturing tolerances, so feel free to give info you measure on anything that has already been supplied.

I'm considering if butt caps should / could be measured too.

Great idea; let's put some numbers up. Here's what I have, collected over the years:

Babolat (averaged over quite a few racquets- PC/PS/PD of different model years):
#2 - 31.3 x 27.40 mm
#3 - 32.3 x 28.30 mm
#4 - 33.5 x 29.20 mm
note: Babolat pallets seem to stay true to size and consistent between different models and model years

Wislon:
#2 - 30.9 x 26.9 mm (HPS 6.1 95 18x20)
#3 - no data
#4 - 33.35 x 29.2 mm (PS 6.0 85)
#4 - 33.80 x 29.2 (Hammer Ultra)
#5 - 36.00 x 30.9 mm (NCode Six-One 95)

Yonex:
#2 - 32.35 x 28.2 mm (RDS002 Tour UL2)
#3 - 32.90 x 29.0 mm (RD Power 10 Long UL3)

Prince:
# 3 - 32.1 x 27.80 mm (Thundercloud OS)
# 4 - 32.8 x 29.75 mm (Graphite II MP)

Toalson:
# 3 - 31.4 x 27.75 mm (40-Love Hyper+)
# 3 - 31.3 x 27.10 mm (40-Love OS)

Volkl:
# 2 - 31.8 x 27.5 (Tour 10 Gen. 2)
# 3 - 32.5 x 27.7 (C10 Pro OS)

Gamma:
# 5 - 33.55 x 29.8 (DF 9.5)

I'd like to see this aggregated for one grip size and see if one brand does indeed fall into a larger than most category

My understanding is that grip sizes sold are measured as finished, meaning with the grip they are sold with. If this is true and if all brands are making the 4-1/2 actually measure true then we can work backwards and find the racquet that measures the greatest in both dimensions is the one that is sold with the thinnest grip. In my experience that would be Yonex. Babolat Skin Feel grips are very thin as well and stock on the Pure Control.

I'm curious if the modern Pure Control (skin feel 1.55mm) and Pure Aero (syntec pro 1.90mm) have the same finished size or bare handle

@Kalin any memory if the Pure Control you measured came stock with skin feel?

Unfortunately no but my new PDs have Syntec and Syntec Pro grips that are 1.55 - 1.65 and my recollection is that most Babolats have replacement grips that are around this thickness. Is the PA Syntec Pro really 1.90?? I've measured mine and they measure 1.65 give or take a bit. Yes, I apply a slight pressure when measuring because this is also how a grip is held.

I'm planning to regrip a racquet soon and will measure the Syntec (non-pro) on it.

These are just pallet measurements with no grips on them, so the stock grip doesnt matter.
Very true and this is the way to use this info for those who are wondering what the point of all this is:

If you know your preferred grip size, you can choose a combination of bare pallet size, replacement grip and overgrip to get there. You can always fine-tune it by trying a somewhat thinner or thicker overgrip

If you simply feel your current grip is too thin/too thick you can use all the info (in this + the linked thread) to get to the right size by changing to an appropriately sized replacement grip + OG combo

If you, like many of us, are set on your favourite grip + OG combo (i.e. you like Tournagrip over Fairway leather) and you know what size you prefer and want to change racquet brand this lets you choose the appropriate pallet size.

yep. But I was replying to a one off comment a few posts up
My presupposition is that if babolat ships two models with different thickness grips either they have a different handle size or they have a different circumference. This is just my logic, we will see if I'm wrong as we get more data.

The other part of this are the variances within the hairpin, pallet and grip. It's not inconceivable that you could have a L3 and end up with a L4.

I've now added the Head Ti.Radical OS. Here is a spreadsheet with the dimensions you can sort to compare in the manner you see fit.

Interesting that the Head #4 I played with in high school, and the wilson #4 and yonex #3 have a similar area but different proportions. They all feel reasonably 'right' to me. Changes in the bevel 3 to 7 bother me the most. A #3 in Prince and maybe Babolat would probably be better than the #4 I've demo'd previously.

Here is a graphic I made of the typical measurements of Prince, Wilson, Babolat, and Head Racquets as measured with #4 grips.

The last one didnt make it but hey here you go:
Good idea, probably better than trying to use the spreadsheet on mobile

Do you mean my last image isn't loading for you? It is kinda huge, I think I may break them out to individual graphics like so:

It seems that the images don't show up anymore, I remember seeing it and could prove very useful. Do you mind uploading again?
