Dimitrov to beat nadal

Where do you get this shtick?

A worse version of Dimitrov was playing against a better version of Rafa 3 years ago in the QF (under conditions that favoured him less), and he was more than holding his own.
I can see your point, but keep in mind that Nadal played that match with some bloody blisters that affected his serve and play.

And still he played better than he does now.
Well, he did came with the whole momentum from 2013 for that match, and now he's coming from an injury. Regardless of the age, he can still play better. I guess we'll just have to wait a few hours to find out if he's ready now.

Agreed.

If Dimi gets one set, it would be surprising. It seems likely he will tamely go down and win about 9 games, total. It's a bad match up-- his BH will just get pummeled all night.
Dimitrov has never been straight setted by Nadal on HC and they have played matches since 2009 when Dimitrov was 17. Dimitrov is playing better than in 2014, Nadal is playing worse, Dimitrov was a point away from going up 2 sets to 1 back then...

but for whatever reason I think Nadal is gonna win in straight sets. I could even see Nadal winning 3 tie-breaks.

Just wondering who you'd like to see win this match t_p? :)

Not confident in Roger's chances?
No, Federer could be at his 2017 best, Nadal at his post 2014 worst and he'll still win in a BO5 set match. Federer's backhand just can't handle Nadal's fh topspin and that's all there is to it. He could mask this deficiency when he was younger but this hasn't been the case for years.

IMO... if Dimitrov plays to his potential, he wins. If his balls shrivel and retract like they often do when a member of generation useless sees a member of the big 4 on the other side of the net, he loses.

Shrivel and retract, brilliant. Big 3 by the way.

Isn't there even a small part of you that would love to see another Fedal slam final, if not for nostalgic reasons more than anything else?

Nadals win over zverev was impressive no doubt.

Monfils and raonic to be blunt handed it to him. Dimitrov just tore apart an in form goffin who us a better returner than nadal.

Dimitrov moves well and this court isnt bouncing high so going affer dinitrov backhand wont work as effectively.

The pressurr on nadal to make it the dream final has often got to him outside of clay. He is still hitting his fh short and nobody has yet to say nadal is llaying great tennis. He is fighting great and is fit but there is a difference.

With federer injured (he wont recober for sunday if news of this abductor injury is ckrrect) the final wouldnt be a dream final anyway. Nadal or dimitrov will win the final.

But for all the romance at this tournament it may well be the tournamwnt that heralds a new era. Dimitrov easily good enough to win a major. This is his best chance as murray and djokovic (still byvfar the best two in the world) are out and they can sufficate the life out of dimitrov something nadal of today cannof and never will be able to do. The nadal of 2008 would have destroyed dimitrov but alas we are in2017.
Agree. Dimitrov CYGS incoming. Nadal to retire and open taco stand in Manacor.

No because names don't play. This isn't 2009, anymore. I've seen this movie a million times before don't need any more confirmation of what I already know. The anticipation of the match will be greater than the match itself, believe me.

Good post. Nadal v federer is not now ghe matchup of murday and djokovic.

I would love nadal to get to final (doubtful) amd beat federer as the goat debate will rage and we can all get involved while murray and djokovic rip the tour apart for rest of the year.

Dimitrov winning ao will be a waste of time as he will spend the next year having sex with hundreds of celebrities female of course. Then say his movement on court isnt great due to a groin strain.

As a djokovic fan you know it would be pure nostalgia as u know as well as i do as a nadal fan that there has been nothing to suggest fedal will get remotely close to your ultron or murray rest of the year.

As for dimitrov he sees winning the ao has an open pass to sleeping with yet more gorgeous babes. His idea of a grand slam is different to the rest us i think....but damn good fun all the same!

The only thing that Djokovic is possibly going to rip apart this year is one of his tennis shirts.

Djokovic will have had his fire reignited seeing nadal and federer back.

Expect ultron to win the french open and indian wells and cincinatti this year and wtf . Bare minimum
If Nadal wins then he probably cements his place above Novak and Peteras.

Well id say he is already ahead of both but it would stretch the gap definitely and obviously.

Its a huge achievement if he does it. His best achisvement probably.

But it wont herald the toppling of murray and djokovic. Those guys probably invested too much at back end of last year chasing no1 end of year ranking. Mentally must have took its toll.

Yh and the old guard putting the djo nd mury in their place below.

Agree Dimi is good enough to win a major but this really is a bad matchup. this court still takes topspin pretty well albeit fast court. and Dimi backhand really doesn't match up well with any of RAFA's groundies.
It's actually not that good a match-up for Nadal if you look at their previous results. ALL of their hard court matches right back to the beginning have been hard, long wins by Nadal - even when Dimitrov was in his teens. None, not even one, has been a straight-forward win.

So, is Dimitrov a better player now? I think so. And he even won their last hard court match. It may be his only win vs Nadal but it's not like Nadal was ever dominating him like he has others. Something about Dimitrov's game seems to unsettle Nadal.

Nads is going to wear Dimi down as this court is allowing him to get tremendous purchase on his forehands and he's achieving consistent depth of shot that I haven't seen from him in quite some time.
The pressure to constantly be on the attack will eventually overcome Grigs and the unforced errors will tick up.
The Bull wins in 4 sets at the very most, and very likely straights.
Mark it down.

Nadal is paying $1.39, Dimi is $3.04 and I think that's about right as of 11am Friday Morning Melbourne time on Sportsbet .

Come on Rafa, just one more match and then you can stomp over wounded grandpa straight to the trophy bite in 3,2,1.... What's not to like? :)

Agreed . I think dimitrov will win in 4 sets. His backhand doesnt fold like federers does

Incidentally at the beginning of the Tournament to win the title, Murray was favourite at $2.50 and Nadal and Fed was $13 and $21, so if Fed wins and you placed money on him then you'd be pretty pleased with yourself, not that I'm advocating gambling, just an observation.

No one knows. Even baby Dimitrov in like 2011 would push Nadal to deciding sets on hard court. Only some of their clay matches haven't been competitive. It's actually funny because, before 2015, people said Dimitrov was a bad matchup for Nadal. Now apparently he's a good matchup after both slumped for a couple years. And after Dimitrov just routined Nadal on a similar court in Shanghai.

Shanghai is not a best of five slam and Nadal was already mentally checked out for the year in Shanghai. Nadal looks a lot better now. I would be surprised if Nadal lost this match.

After Fognini, Verdasco, Pouille, etc. it would be silly to be surprised by any Nadal loss. I'm surprised when he wins.

Surely Nadal will be favourite in the final, if he gets past Dimitrov?
Those odds reflect the current fact that Nadal has to win two matches still, Federer only one. As soon as the semi is over the odds will show Nadal as the favourite if he wins. No major though, he's not going to. :p

They will both be nervous no doubt, but I think Nadal will have the mental edge. Grigor playing very well and his backhand appears to have developed into something he can actually use as a weapon. Neither result would be surprising but the tennis world wants one more Fedal final to put the final nail in the previous era and bring in the fresh, new, weak era without a big 4 and Roanic as the #3 in the world!
How in the world is Raonic number 3 in the world? No offense to him, but if that isn't a sign of a weak era, I don't know what is.
