What can you say at the beginning of the tournament she was the favourite i mean c'mon she is the world no.1 and she was handing out bagels in the early rounds she was looking like she was in great form then she pulled a Safina in the final something she said she wouldn't do before the tournament started which goes to show she really is safin's sister
#1 or not give credit where credit is due.She was outplayed by Kuzzy plain and simple.Handing out bagels and breadsticks isn't a guarantee to winning the whole thing.Remember Mary Pierce in RG 1994? She lost only 5 games til the finals where she was straight setted.

She did play like garbage out there today. Her last match with Kuznetzova was 3 sets, and interesting, wasn't it? Everyone is entitled to an off day. So far this year, Safina's only off days seem to be when she's in a GS final. Last I checked there are 126 other players who were in the tournament who'd love to have made it to the final. She did not lose merely because her opponent played well; she lost because she played poorly at the same time. I, for one, am looking forward to her getting the monkey off her back.

another thing I find humorous. Everyone bashes these athletes for claiming "I beat myself" and other stuff. How do you think they rise to the top? An insane amount of self confidence is required to be a top athlete at any level. They should "think" their always the best, that is how they maintain that, if you think you suck all the time and were out played it certainly has an effect on your game

players in other sports say things 1000 times worse and no one cares. we go through this all the time, here (and i don't know why). it's a stupid post-match presser . . . who cares? when i watch other sports, no one gives a hoot what the loser has to say. it's irrelevant. they lost. and even the average fan can probably figure out why they lost without some knucklehead reporter asking some knucklehead question at the presser.

You saw her there today. She did beat herself. It's not to say Kuz didn't play well, but that was not Safina at her best.
I am not anti Serena and a Venus fan and nobody's press conference comments bother me. They're tennis players, I don't judge them by their comments in silly press conferences. Unless they make me laugh then it'll endear me to them, but don't care in general.

Except Safina was right,she wasn't mentally on court at all today.It was one of the biggest meltdowns I've seen.I mean turning to coach and saying I'm a coward? And then almost starting to cry before the match was even over? It was tough to see her like that even though I was rooting for Kuzzy to go all the way.Safina really seems to have some issues when it comes to big matches like this(slam finals),I hope she works them out because she definitely has a game to win a slam,there's no question about it.

I disagree that Kuzzy went for her shots,if anything she played smart tennis not going for too much and moving Safina around.Kuzzy's one of the few players in WTA today who has some variety and tactics in her game instead of just clubbing the ball hoping it goes in.
While I think Safina was going for too much off the ground,maybe due to her nerves.
hey...no guts, no glory! Kuzzy showed up and played like a BEAST. Safina couldn't "nut-up" and so it goes...However, this "I beat myself" shlock is getting old. Can't these players admit that their opponent played better than them...whether they choked or got their necks stepped on. Sheesh!

Your statement needs to be drilled into the heads of all who (for no good or valid reason) believe a competitive profession requires a crippling mindset like humility. There's no place for it in situation where--essentially--its one person against the "world they occupy.

Nothing wrong with what she said; while she doesn't address Kuzzy's performance, she's not making anything up; there's no intention to take away from Kuzzy's win. Safina's worst enemy can be herself; she struggles to hold it together at finals. I was hoping she'd have the nerves worked out since AO09, perhaps she thought so too and was even more shocked to see them present today. You can lose to -- and because of -- yourself, even if you are the #1 player; it's certainly not easy to say/face that. I'll be very happy to see her fight in a final with the same focus/confidence she has on the six matches leading to it.

Amongst the current field I would say Serena is nearly unbeatable at her best on any faster surface except for Venus on grass. On a slower surface no, and she is delusional to what her best is if she thinks so (which of course she is). I think Safina at her best would probably be unbeatable on clay amongst the field that is left, but on nothing else.

It may not be true but as a pro athlete she has to think in those mindsets. You can't think if the other person is at her best u may lose. That's a no-no from coaches.

Nonsense. Safina's game is not suited for clay; she just has a long wind up on her FH and slow movement that become less of a liability on slower surfaces. By the same token, if someone is consistently hitting wit pace, deep, from side to side, Safina will lose, no matter the surface. Kuznetsova was doing that for most of the first set. Safina will never be "unbeatable" anywhere.

What is the problem, she is right. Kuznetsova was nothing special. Kuznetsova took 3 sets to beat a past her prime out of shape Serena on her worst surface, then 3 sets to beat doubles specialist Stosur. She wasnt in special form. Nor was she in special form today. If Safina had played the tennis she played all week she would have easily won in straight sets without question. She was right, she beat herself, Kuznetsova was just along for the ride.

I dont entirely disagree with the first half of your statement, but todays match is a poor example. Kuznetsova was never playing tennis today or anytime this tournament that a normal Safina could not have easily beaten. Normal Safina just never shows up for a slam final.

I agree with everything you said. The fact that she let herself down was so plain to see. Kuzzy played extremely well no doubt but a half-decent version of Safina would've at least made a match out of it.
The question is, how did this happen? I used to think she lost the previous 2 slams because she was the underdog who didn't have enough confidence in herself to pull it off.. Now she went to the match as the big fav but you would've thought she was a surprise finallist by the way she played. What's going on? She couldn't win a slam when she had no pressure and she couldn't win one under pressure. It must have been her head and her heart that caused her the GS titles because she sure had a game to win it.

I'm a Safina fan, but I don't think she beat herself. She played reasonably well, but she can't match Kuznetsova for variety or movement. When Kuznetsova is on, and keeps her nerves together she's very, very difficult to beat.
Bottom line:
Safina said the same thing Serena said, and as far as the postings I didn't see anyone calling her ugly, a b*, out-of-shape, arrogant, or anything else.

I like Safina. She's one of my favorites. I think she's awfully sweet, but the point is, why can one player say something and be vilefied and another player say the same thing and be lauded. It just reeks!

It's not the same thing. Safina didn't play, she was scared to death. You could tell by Svetlana's reaction in the end. Serena Williams makes those comments when she plays well and loses the match.

I think it's just that Serena has such an arrogant demeanor, and has a history of talking down to other players. With Safina, if you actually watch the interview, you can see that it is just innocent honesty, and there is a big difference.
Safina played well but got her neck stepped on by Sveta.She didn't choke, she was outplayed.Serena on the other hand choked as she was a break up in the third against Sveta but couldn't keep up the pace.

LOL! You are delusional. Serena played extremely well for her standards at this point in her career on clay, her worst surface. She had no business even being in a 3rd set but Kuznetsova's choke in the 2nd set let her there. Safina on the other hand choked the whole match away in that she didnt even show up and handed it to Kuznetsova. Based on her form leading into the French and during the French itself it was also her match to win or lose. You are another clueless newcomer to these boards, all your opinions are based on biases to players you are in love with (eg- Roddick, Serena) or players you cant stand (Safina, Henin, Federer). Arent you the one who says Federer never outplays Roddick, Roddick just always chokes. :lol:

Well we have the option to have an avatar, why not use a player you like. I dont see what the big deal of using an avatar of your favorite player is, what else do you expect people to use.
Secondly it is hard to be biased to a player atleast 50% of experts and fans consider the greatest female player ever (almost all of the other 50% considering it to be Navratilova) and atleast 95% of experts and fans consider the be one of the two greatest female players ever. Impossible to get much higher than that, fan or no fan.
