She did play like garbage out there today. Her last match with Kuznetzova was 3 sets, and interesting, wasn't it? Everyone is entitled to an off day. So far this year, Safina's only off days seem to be when she's in a GS final. Last I checked there are 126 other players who were in the tournament who'd love to have made it to the final. She did not lose merely because her opponent played well; she lost because she played poorly at the same time. I, for one, am looking forward to her getting the monkey off her back.
one of them was going to give it away today. i thought it might be kuznetsova. but i'm really not surprised. kuznetsova played better (i only watched first set) and went for her shots
Question:You basically beat yourself?
DINARA SAFINA: I lost myself
She gave no credit to Kuzzy who outplayed her.
Unlike Serena who has 10 slams, she has 0 but already full of herself.
another thing I find humorous. Everyone bashes these athletes for claiming "I beat myself" and other stuff. How do you think they rise to the top? An insane amount of self confidence is required to be a top athlete at any level. They should "think" their always the best, that is how they maintain that
serena and safina think if they played at their absolute best, nobody could beat them. i don't think that is true, if their opponents rise to the occasion and play their absolute best too.

Amongst the current field I would say Serena is nearly unbeatable at her best on any faster surface except for Venus on grass. On a slower surface no, and she is delusional to what her best is if she thinks so (which of course she is). I think Safina at her best would probably be unbeatable on clay amongst the field that is left, but on nothing else.
#1 or not give credit where credit is due.She was outplayed by Kuzzy plain and simple.
Nonsense. Safina's game is not suited for clay; she just has a long wind up on her FH and slow movement that become less of a liability on slower surfaces. By the same token, if someone is consistently hitting wit pace, deep, from side to side, Safina will lose, no matter the surface. Kuznetsova was doing that for most of the first set. Safina will never be "unbeatable" anywhere.
I agree with everything you said. The fact that she let herself down was so plain to see. Kuzzy played extremely well no doubt but a half-decent version of Safina would've at least made a match out of it.Except Safina was right, she wasn't mentally on court at all today. It was one of the biggest meltdowns I've seen.I mean turning to coach and saying I'm a coward? And then almost starting to cry before the match was even over? It was tough to see her like that even though I was rooting for Kuzzy to go all the way.Safina really seems to have some issues when it comes to big matches like this(slam finals),I hope she works them out because she definitely has a game to win a slam, there's no question about it.
I don't know why you guys make such a big deal out of this. Safina wasn't being egotistical, she was quite sweet, and hurting badly from knowing that she choked. Whats the problem? Anyway, we saw the match so we know what she's saying is true.

The question is, how did this happen? I used to think she lost the previous 2 slams because she was the underdog who didn't have enough confidence in herself to pull it off.. Now she went to the match as the big fav but you would've thought she was a surprise finally by the way she played. What's going on? She couldn't win a slam when she had no pressure and she couldn't win one under pressure. It must have been her head and her heart that caused her the GS titles because she sure had a game to win it.
I was rooting for Safina today, and I fully expected her to win today as it seems most did. Still I am happy for Kuznetsova. That 2nd slam has been a long time coming. Amongst this current very weak womens field someone of her current really ought to win multiple slams so I am glad she finally added that 2nd. Maybe she can gain more confidence and build her career from this.
Not to take credit away from her but what a miserable performance from Safina. Not just her tennis but her complete fear of the moment. She almost looked ready to cry in the 2nd set. You know even mentally fragile players are supposed to build with their experiences in the big matches. Not Safina, she just gets worse with each one. Her French Open final performance vs Ivanovic was actually decent, not great, but decent, especialy for her first ever slam final. Her Olympic final performance vs Dementieva was a clear step down, despite that it somehow went 3 sets. Her Australian Open final performance was very weak and yet even further regression in her performance from the Olympic final. Despite that this was a more competitive scoreline than the Australian Open final her actual performance was again even further down from the Australian Open final. She just seems to get worse and worse each time, which really looks bad on her. I thought she was finally turning the corner, this is getting pathetic.
In the past players would always be gracious and speak well of their opponents after a match. The times are a changing.......
I like Safina. She's one of my favorites. I think she's awfully sweet, but the point is, why can one player say something and be vilefied and another player say the same thing and be lauded. It just reeks!
Safina played well but got her neck stepped on by Sveta. She didn't choke, she was outplayed.Serena on the other hand choked as she was a break up in the third against Sveta but couldn't keep up the pace.
Both said the same thing in their pressers but only Serena got called names. This board is ful of hypocrites.
LOL! You are another clueless newcomer to these boards, all your opinions are based on biases to players you are in love with
Your screen name and avatar makes you a hypocrite for posting that, since you obviously love Graf enough to use her in that manner. Are you going to tell us that you do NOT have bias fueling your opinions on the female payers using Graf as your conscious (or subconscious) measuring stick?
Chill out lil girl.Don't revert to insults if you lack arguments. My post wasn't directed at you.LOL! You are delusional.
It was a combination of Kuzzy choking and Serena stepping up her game.Hence the break in the third.Serena played extremely well for her standards at this point in her career on clay, her worst surface. She had no business even being in a 3rd set but Kuznetsova's choke in the 2nd set let her there.
No Kuzzy took it to her.Safina on the other hand choked the whole match away in that she didnt even show up and handed it to Kuznetsova.
She had an easy draw(except Vika) and people started thinking that she was gonna win RG.Cruising through rounds doesn't guarantee a victory.Once again Mary Pierce:RG 1994.Based on her form leading into the French and during the French itself it was also her match to win or lose.
You are an old timer,so....You are another clueless newcomer to these boards,
"In love with A-Rod and Serena"? lmao your big empty head is screwed up.I'm huge fan of Rafa and i like Serana's game.Just check my other posts.all your opinions are based on biases to players you are in love with (eg- Roddick, Serena)
I 'm not a fan them but i don't hate them.I've never started threads bashing them, unlike some fans do against Rafa and Serena.or players you cant stand (Safina, Henin, Federer).
Try to find that post.I assume you're an adult(i can be wrong though) so let's keep the discussion clean.I've yet to call other posters i disagree with names since i joined this board(i've been lurking around for years btw).Arent you the one who says Federer never outplays Roddick, Roddick just always chokes.

The thing you see now, started with the arrival of Martina Hingis.

.. Choke means squandering a lead, which Dinara never had in both sets. She was lagging behind Sveta in both sets: broken in the first game, first set, broke right back, got broken again in the 8th game, broke right back in the 9th game, then lost her serve in the 10th game.As you can see, that's hardly "choking".just re-watch the match in the second set.. she missed too many easy shots way out.. in the bottom of the net.. then double faults so many times
lmao Sveta already had a slam, unlike her. She's the one that needed that the most to validate her #1 ranking.well.. she did not choke then she wanted to give the match away for Sveta as a childhood friend..
No.Ana overpowered her,Serena annihilated her and Sveta outplayed her.she CHOKED in all of the GS finals she had played so far.. !!
What a pile of useless and completely false BS. They really need to implement IQ tests before letting people on the boards.
Well we have the option to have an avatar, why not use a player you like.
Ah, but notice how some of thes members conveniently forget her disrespectful or lowdown comments about Graf, Mauresmo and the Williams sisters, among others. They would have everyone believe Serena introduced this sort of behavior.
