**** - disappointing customer service

I took a Donnay Red 99 in for a pallet change to be matched as closely as possible to my Babolats and they did an OUTSTANDING job. When I pick up the new stick it feels just like my Babolats. Turnaround time was awesome. I asked for it to be ready the following day after I dropped it off and it was ready to go. I will only use **** for my customization and stringing needs. I do not trust anyone else! :)

Are you in the City? Have you tried anywhere else?

TW video interview with **** came across as rude and very arrogant. Following from that interview (available on youtube)

"We don't turn down anyone who come with right attitude and don't ask for FREE"

Now they are doing lot of favor in doing your job, since they have pros who pay them lot of money.

In short they don't like us till they are short of work.... I will never do business with such arrogant people....remember in this world everybody is replaceable... in tennis world you have other people to do the same job..

Please put the link up for us to see what you are talking about. Thanks.

I've had work done to my racquets by Roman and I've been extremely happy with everything they've done. I also time my racquet work to where he isn't at a major tournament. I figure that helps everyone involved. I've talked to Roman many times and he doesn't seem arrogant with me.

Why would I go anywhere else? They are the best. Most of the other places in NY (Mason's, Grand Central Racquet) are decent stringers, but mostly for tourists. **** gets the job done the right way and promptly. No complaints at all and I have done a lot of business with them.

I have only heard good things about Roman, and Jamie who works for him, is a great stringer, once you get by her neurosis. Mark at Grand Central is also very good, and the only one there who is.

**** is the best in NYC no questions asked!

I live in Zoo York and have used Mason's and others. Mason's is good if you are in desperate need of some clothing or need some gear last minute, but you might as well go to Sports Authority or Golfmsmith where you can get that stuff cheaper. The staff at Mason's and all the other spots in the city are recreational players that don't have professional playing knowledge. If you are looking for experts who know their shi* then you go to ****. I have bought several racquets, had many racquets strung, and had grips done by **** throughout the years. I've described my playing style and previous racquets to Roman and he always suggests great comparable new racquets. In fact, my stick of choice is the Prestige Classic and Roman has told me before that that was a legendary stick and I can't get the same thing anymore, so he doesn't try to sell you new stuff if he doesn't believe in it. Roman always advises that I demo sticks before buying them (and I have demoed many from them), which is something that desperate shops don't do. They keep a computer profile on their customers, so they have records of your preferences.

And for people who say **** has attitude, not true. They are very busy and string for the pros, they have don't time to bullshi$ about nonsense. I've spoken to them at length about many things though, so maybe the people not getting aren't asking the right questions or are annoying. Bottom line is that the joint is top notch and Roman is very knowledgeable.

Well said, tanman...

He's talking out of his arse. The quote he's giving is from a Nate Ferguson interview done by TW (Spencer ??!?)...and there's nothing "arrogant" about it when put in context.

Found it ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eql8Jnpa9Bs check it from around 3:30 to 4: xx

Od1n, thanks for the link. I'll watch it later on.
I've never had a bad experience with Roman any time I've called him. He's always professional and answers any and all questions I have. He isn't a " let's sit down and chat" type of guy. If you want that go somewhere else. I'm sure he and his staff are way too busy to just chew the fat with you.

Hah. That must have been Jamie that I was talking to. I was wondering why she seemed a little..."off."

Anna, the other girl who works there seemed very sweet and answered all my questions.

I was there recently and had a perfectly fine experience with them. I didn't see Roman as I'm guessing he was at the Championships? Even got to see and hold one of Agassi's racquets. As someone who learned tennis in the early nineties, that was awesome.

Jamie is the very light-skinned, red/brown/slightly gray haired 30-something.

That's been my experience with them. They're definitely all business but they answer your questions. Their string jobs are second to none. I just went there yesterday in fact. They have very quick turnaround too considering the job quality. You pay for it though, but it's worth it.

What did they charge for stringing labor?

BTW, what differentiates a good string job from just an average or even bad string job? Thanks.

Consistency from day2day/wk2wk/mo2mo. If I string your stick today at 55 lbs, and then again at the same tension, 6 weeks later, when you get on the court, will you be immediately satisfied?

Consistency on each string. Main string consistency per string can be tested by pitch and deflection before the cross strings are installed. Cross strings by deflection.

Reducing or eliminating the friction around the corners of the grommets as the string is pulled.

Reducing the friction as cross strings are pulled thru the mains.

Tie-off knots that do not lose string tension on the tied-off string.

A responsive string bed, unless a deader string bed is asked for.

Main strings that are not notched or cut from pulling cross strings through mains too fast, sawing through the mains, before tensioning, so that the string job doesn't break too soon either because your stringer is rushing, lazy, or just a scheister.

Tension consistency after the string "sets" after stringing. If you put the racquet on a diagnostic machine, testing the string bed immediately after stringing, 24 hours later, and after an hour of play, has the tension rating dropped very little? If so, you have a good string job, if not, you have a bad string job.

Do you watch the work of your carpenter, painter, plumber, landscaper, pool cleaner, housekeeper, auto mechanic, etc., OR, query your doctors, lawyers, accountants, tennis pro, chiropractor, etc., or observe your children's nanny, tutors, coaches, etc.? If so, for all the time that many commenters spend on these threads, you should do so with your stringer! At the very least, you will learn how to string. Lastly, if the stringer knows that you can play, I guarantee you that the string job will take longer and will be done better, unless said stringer does not want repeat business, or dumb as a stump.

ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TO WATCH YOUR STRINGER STRING, AS YOU ENGAGE HIM/HER IN CONVERSATION, TO DISCERN HOW CONSCIENTIOUS HE/SHE IS.

This is GREAT info. I have a feeling that many of us don't pay enough attention to how are racquets are strung. The most many of us look into is what kind of machine the stringer is using. Based on your description above, technique would seem to trump equipment...

Generally speaking, stringing is VERY overrated. I have seen more stuck up stringers than, say, doctors. I am sure you can find loads of information about "super-high quality mumbo jumbo" stringing but the truth is: there is very little to no difference for the rest of us. People who charge some bizzare amount of money for stringing must have some kind of "explanation", right? Just find someone who can do half-decent job and hit the cr4p out of that ball :) or you can buy some cheap stinging machine and diy (personal experience).

That is why you watch them string. They can't BS with mumbo jumbo, as you know about their abilities and diligence as you are watching what they do.

Awesome stick. They have really thin beams and allow you to whip them through the air. I take serious cuts at the ball and they tend to stay deep and in. You definitely need to generate your own pop, but the control and stability are there. Serves also get some nice spin and depth in the box. At the net the stick is stable and comfortable. If the stick interests you I would give it a demo and see what you think...

Well, while I was paying for the labor I didn't have the chance to watch because I would just drop the racquet off and come back tomorrow or in 2 days.

Btw, while your idea is good (watching and judging) I/most of us am/are not as knowledgeable and talented as Leonardo Da Vinci hence I/we cannot competently watch and judge how carpenter, painter, plumber, landscaper, pool cleaner, housekeeper, auto mechanic, doctors, lawyers, accountants, tennis pro, chiropractor work.

Sometimes I just have to trust people no matter how goofy they might look :)

That's cool!

I wish that I could do that, but I'm a native New Yawker, and trust...does not come easy. My BS meter is on max, 24/7.

How do the Donnays play compared to you Aero Storms? Thanks.

Older thread, but I'm not getting any response to my emails from ****. Anyone know how to get a hold of them???? I'm interested in purchasing 3 x **** WH pallets but unable to order online.

Would love some feedback from those who have dealt with ****

Cheers

Just call. Works for me.

thanks guys - just hard to call on my cellphone from Canada (don't have a land-line anymore these days), just thought email/online ordering would be easier...

guess I'll wait a bit and perhaps try to score some TK82S on the classifieds

I also had some customer service issues with them in the past. Not responding to eamils, inconsistant quotes. I will never use them again either. They act like they are doing you a favor. I don't need that.

100 % agree..........they act like they are doing you a favor,,,,,,,,

I often wondered why nobody steps in and starts a customizing shot including a customer friendly modern business website. Seems like a real biz opportunity to me.

Customizing tennis racquets is certainly a bit complex but not rocket science.....

Odd.

I used TW matching services, granted not the same level of customization but they did a nice job. Maybe TW should start a mod shop.

My local Ford dealer has a world famous Mod Shop and you can't believe the amount of work they do and the money they make.
Racquets aren't Mustangs or Factory 5 Cobras but it is kinda the same idea....

Do you have a smartphone or iPod touch or iPad. Download the Pinger app and make calls on wifi for cheap. I was calling my parents in the US from Spain on my iPhone Pinger app for like $.02 a minute. Actually it was free, because somehow I got free minutes when I signed up. But a bundle of 100 mins is I believe $2.

My local tennis shop does the same thing. They are doing well with a lot of orders

They're always helpful on the phone. RP is an older man, probably not as interested in email as you are.

Good point. I have always found Roman to be affable and more than willing to spend time on the phone. Anyone looking for a more reasonably priced yet still extremely capable option, try RacquetMaxx.
