Disastrous loss for poor Osaka

Tough draw with Caro Garcia but this is a devastating loss for Osaka. She's no longer elite until she proves it. She was ready, the coach Fissette had plenty of time to get her body and head ready but she failed to get the job done. Qinwen is laughing somewhere. Also her new book publicity will take a huge hit, nobody will be talking about it now that she's out. Osaka should be in her prime now but she may never recover from the self sabotage inflicted by trying to be a militant political activist. She really has nothing to prove or to play for, other than money. And all the WTA players with hunger and ambitions may be too tough for her to overcome now. Kind of sad because Osaka at her best, seemed like a better more efficient athletic version of .... Serena. Who remembers before Osaka played Serena the first time her goal was to make Serena yell, "CMON!!" That pure, playful innocent Osaka is long gone.

A whiny spoiled entitled ungrateful malcontent is simply not a good look for the WTA.

If one cannot answer harmless questions at a presser such as, "What happened at break point?", how in the world does one deal with life?

She just sets a horrible example to people struggling with real-world problems every day.

Although we must commend Osaka for showing up to the presser. Maybe she is finally starting to grow up.

Compare and contrast to the pleasant likeable Caroline. Loves to play and talk tennis.

She called herself delusional bc she thought she could win the tournament. She said her delusion might be the reason for her wins. Love it. Classic Osaka. Best interviews in tennis.

Edit: close match vs a tough opponent. Not a bad start after squeezing out a kid.

Wozniacki thinks she can win the tournament too.

You think Serena was an inefficient athletic person? OK, delete.

Made $32,000 to get some practice in with no expectations, and full concierge service, tons of vendor freebies, free stay and food...yeah...poor girl is suffering.
I'm waiting for the article that tells us how much that Louis Vuitton necklace she had on cost. And how much Louis Vuitton was paying her to wear it.

My goodness. :giggle:

I guess she wants her crown back on top of the Forbes list. Coco and Iga better look out.

What does Prakash Amritraj say...

Get 'em, Queen.

Serena's body was not suited for long term tennis success and dominance yet somehow she made it happen. Imagine if her body was more streamlined and weight suited for tennis? She may still be dominating - and dominating for years to come. I still find it miraculous that she lasted as long as she did, with all that hard court mileage and pounding on those knee and ankle joints.

It was just normal Naomi Osaka...

This shows Osaka was devastated by this loss. She expected much more. She may be realizing deep down, she may be done as an elite and the game may have passed her by. And she no longer has the right mindset and mental fortitude and freedom to fight her way back to the top. To cry like this is a sign of weakness and unhappiness.

This was a devastating loss for her confidence, for Nike's new outfits for her, and also the book. Hopefully she can figure it out and play her best tennis in the future but that looks unlikely right now.

OMG! It's the Hidenburg and Titanic all over again. Bogus headline newbie.

Early on her in her career she was very muscular and lean a perfect balance of speed and endurance. Perfect for tennis.
Unfortunately, her overall fitness dropped, but she still had a good base behind her. I think less weight might have helped her defense because her offense never seemed to struggle.

Exactly. She didn't take care of that body, which would have been just fine (relatively speaking) had she not carried tens of extra pounds for maybe the entire back fifteen years of said career.

But they don't have to take a year off work and they don't have to get their physicality back especially as athletes.
It's different with women of course (especially the physical aspect), but it's not a non-factor for the men. It's easier for a man if he's already married with kids when his professional sports career takes off, and then having another kid isn't as big a change. Becoming a new father is a big life change.

It hardly affects the man's career. The father may take a month or so off, but that's it whilst the mother has to nurse and look after the baby for at least a year, then juggle with childcare if she wants to go back to work.

But it can. While he was a bachelor or unmarried, with no kids, his career might have been everything important in his life, or perhaps not as important compared to a good social life. That can shift a lot when he becomes a father, perhaps even massively so in some cases. It will almost certainly have a subtle difference and change in dynamics at the very least, sometimes a positive change, sometimes a negative change.

No. Everyone knows that the mother takes the brunt. Every time a WTA player returns to the tour after having a baby, the talk is all about how much toll having a baby has had on their fitness and how they would juggle having a child with being on tour. This doesn't happen to the men. No one mentions how much impact having a baby would have on Nadal, Medvedev, or Monfils being on tour. No one knew Medvedev was expecting a baby until the baby was born. A WTA player would have had to take time off long before the baby was born.

I firmly believe he's the kind of player whose success hinged on postponing a family as much as possible.
I think Nadal is either all in or not there at all. But he could prove me wrong, of course. We'll see.

So let understand. It's definitely the baby.
And definitely not because being a premier athlete is hard for 37-year-olds who've had injury plagued careers.

Cool story. She is 40 and dominated the tour. She would probably beat you in a 100 yard dash too.

Yes, just like Gauff lost to Kenin in the 1st round at a major and then her career collapsed afterwards. Oh wait, what happened?!

I think Caroline Garcia should be congratulated for such good play. Osaka was simply outplayed and has nothing to be sorry about.
yeah, garcia is an excellent player. for that reason i don't know why anyone would chalk this up as a 'disastrous' loss for osaka, makes far too little of the player garcia is. caroline was the favorite, and won...on to the next tournament.

Caroline played her top level again. Osaka had chances in end of the 2nd set, not bad for her return. Let see how the year plays out for her.

Shapavalov losing R1 is disastrous.
