Discho strings/Black mamba??

Ok, I tried out the Black Mamba Penta (non twisted) strung at 48#s in an EXO 100 16x18.

This string is not bad, but I am really not a full poly guy anymore. One of the reasons is that when the tension drops, it is a big time change of control. This is what happened after around 2 hours for me. I did not feel very confident hitting out since I started losing the feel for what the ball would do. I also struggled at net.

This is definitely a nice string for baseline play and the spin is awesome. No doubt about it. I just did not like the feel much at all, and the playability is rather short. I also struggled to feel the consistency that I get out of a hybrid setup in the 50s.

Hey Power Player. I've got the 100 18x20. I tried the Penta Twisted and at 52 it created a very firm feeling stringbed, so be careful with your elbow. You might try the Iontec at a full bed at 52. Didn't try the regular Mamba. Hope this helps. For reference, I use Tour Bite in a full bed at 58!

Penta twisted feels totally different than regular Penta or the regular Mamba...i had Penta twisted at 47/42 and the regular Penta at 52/47 in my Vantage BC20 and from a stiffness perspective they weren't too different. they played totally different though. the regular Penta plays and feels more like the regular Mamba than Penta Twisted. i preferred the feel and playability of regular Penta over the twisted version.

for reference, i used TB 16 in a full bed at 47/42.

Sweet. Do you mind me asking what you paid for it?

sorry about the late reply. i haven't been back to this thread until today. i seem to recall it was less than 2k, but i can't remember exactly how much. i do remember i had to beg and plead w/ my better half to give her consent.

agreed. when buying a reel of this stuff, it's a good deal.

interesting that you experienced a significant amount of tension loss in 2 hrs. you're probably a bigger hitter than me. i didn't notice much tension loss in the first 2 hours. i haven't been able to hit since the first few hrs after my wrist started hurting 2 weeks ago. therefore i'm unable to share my experience as to when playability starts to suffer due to substantial tension loss.

i hit for the first time in 3 wks since hurting my wrist and found that the Black Mamba Penta didn't lose much tension after my initial 2 hr session with it. i'm still getting great spin. tension has dropped 3-4 lbs as my shots are landing deeper and closer to the baseline, but i'm getting heavier pace and spin. so far, the strings have about 4 hrs of play on them and are just starting to move a bit, but are still performing well.

tension maintenance is pretty good. i expect the playability will be typical of most polys (6-8 hours). this is a really good shaped poly at any price, but for the price, it's almost unbeatable because it's so affordable that you can restring after every 2-3 hitting sessions.

O-Power

Has anyone tried their 'O-Power'

They claim that it is their most popular string.

Can anyone compare it to SPPP as they are available in the same gauges and colour, maybe they're the same string?

I strung the regular black mamba 1.23 at 45lbs in a MG Rad MP.
im really enjoying the spin that i am getting from this set up. my favorite shot by far with this setup is short angled CC forehands. there is not really much to say about this string. i felt like it had quite a bit of power. a lot of spin. nice touch. and great spin. i really felt like i was in control with all of my shots.
my offensive plan is to hit everything back deep, loopy and high to cause an error. if your play is similar, then id highly recommend trying this.

I'm still liking Black mamba gear, but now at 54lbs instead of 52lbs in a Head Microgel extreme extended to 27.5". I had an ALTA match this morning and it worked great for serve and had no problem getting depth on ground strokes and service returns.

I have a set of thunderstrings triangle evolution to try still which i'm looking forward to!

I tried the penta and didn't like it compared to golden set snake bite, discho ionentec hexa, and thunderstrings. The playbility ran out in a few hours and the strings were a bit stiffer than the ones mentioned

i just tried discho iontec 17g today. this string just ROCKS! i liked Penta especially at the price point, but i highly recommending spending $2 more and stepping up to Discho Iontec. it's just on another level.

mamba website claims...

IONTEC Advantages

Incredible feel for the ball
Unique control
High Tension Stabilty
Good Power
Soft feel
Very Arm Friendly
Great Spin
Extended racquet life with very little notching

i can't speak to the high tension maintenance since i strung it at 52/47, nor can i speak to the last advantage since i've only hit w/ it for 1 session so far, but the rest are spot on. this is one comfortable copoly that doesn't feel mushy. control and feel are better than any copoly or poly i've tried to date. spin is fantastic. slices have unbelievable bite. the action after the bounce was harder and sharper than i've experienced w/ any other string. comfort is comparable to syn gut. feel and touch are great. while i liked penta because it was a good value string, i love iontec because it's an excellent value string. at $70 a reel, this works out to around $4-5/string job which is an incredible value.

just tried iontec and i agree, penta isn't as good as iontec for sure, but it's at a different price point.

i've added O-Power to my list of strings to try, but it may be awhile before i'm able to get around to it since i liked Iontec so much I just placed an order for a reel of it! 8-)

I agree, a great string for the price, i use the Iontec Hexa 1.25 and 1.20 and the string has many qualities, it's up there with the better co-polys.
Too bad they dont make them in another colour...

For any of those who string higher:
Discho/ Mamba strings are still fantastic. I'm rocking the Iontec/ Gear Twisted at around 57/55. Plays great

Ray sent me a few sets to test back in summer but I was not able to get out as much as I would have liked due to injury. Recently I have hit with all 3 and have summarized my thoughts on them. All three strings were strung on a 2pt Dropweight.

Super Speed Gear(Full bed)
  • Tension: 60lbs
  • Your regular string set up: Alien Black Diamond mains, BeastXP Crosses 60/60
  • Racquet brand and model string is installed in: Babolat Aeropro Drive Cortex
  • Power: Did not feel the need to overpower the ball, was able to use my regular playstyle with this string, nothing out of the ordinary for a poly setup
  • Feel: Slightly softer than my normal setup, did not notice any elbow pain after the 10th hour when I started having to compensate for loss of elasticity
  • Tension maintenance: I played with this setup for around 12 hours of drills and a few practice matches. Did not have to cut strings due to tension loss or pain, cut to try next string.
  • Overall comments and feedback: I really enjoyed this string. I am used to shaped poly, but this gear design seemed to add a bit of pop on my forehand, seemed like the ball was jumping a bit higher off the court than my normal setup. Overall I would recommend this string to test. Just a good all-around "spinny" poly that happens to be fairly cheap. Give it a shot, you may love it
SynGut DT(Full bed)
  • Tension it is strung: 58lbs
  • Your regular string set up: Gosen Polylon Ice 60lbs
  • Racquet brand and model string is installed in: Head Prestige Tour
  • Power:Lower power than what I would expect from a multi, I was able to take huge swings at the ball and rocket them in, good grip off the racquet face to allow this
  • Feel: Absolutely plush(coming from full poly), able to adequately execute touch shots perfectly
  • Tension maintenance:20th hour and still going
  • Overall comments and feedback: I've played with syn gut in the past but never a syn gut multi. It was an enjoyable experience and has prompted me to try more syn guts as well as multis in this racquet.

I was also sent a sample of Big Blue(This is the same string as Black Mamba, Green Mamba and O-Power). However as my TE was flaring up I decided to string it at 52. I absolutely hated it. I will purchase another set and retest it next time I order.

i strung up another stick w/ Iontec last night and realized that it's a really easy copoly to string. i only got slowed up on the final 2 crosses.

Ray was kind enough to send me a set of Black Ion rough 17. I just strung it up on my Head Youtek Extreme Pro at 55 for the mains and 53 for the crosses.
I plan to hit with it tomorrow and will post my review in this post.

Here is my review:
I use a Youtek Extreme Pro. Normally use a hybrid of Kirschbaum PLII and multi-synth(crosses). Stringing Black Ion was OK not as easy as synth gut but not too bad.

I played for 4 sets.
Control: Great control. Balls that I thought were going to go out stayed in due to the spin.
Power: Adequate. Serving was fairly easy with it.
Feel: Pretty good. It had about the same feel as my normal setup for drop shots and volleys.

Overall: A great co-poly string. And, a great deal for the price.

I know this thread has been dormant for 7 years, but can anyone comment on the relative comfort of Iontec / Hexa / Black Mamba? I'm down to my last few sets of the super comfortable Iontec and have an option to pick up some Hexa / Black Mamba. Wasn't sure if they retain control or are as comfortable at low tensions the way Iontec is.

Black Mamba is as comfortable as Iontec, but being a black string it has a very dead feel where Iontec is very muted. It has a nice slippery surface and I liked it a lot for crosses with Discho Cellular multi mains. IIRC, Iontec stretched more than BM while stringing but this didn't take away from BM's comfort.

Thanks. I'll get a set soon and try it out. I'll probably just do a full bed at low tension to see how it compares with the Iontec. I have a set of Discho Microfiber lying around so I'll do a hybrid one of these days.

A lot of user order the srings in germany. Sometimes there are persons who order some reels for their own and other persons to share the cost of delivery. There are also other brands like BigStar, Black Skull, Lasertec, which have highest quality, made in germany, strings whith very good prices
