Discussing the player of the year award

The I"TF Players Champion" was always been to my memory going back to early 80s as The Player Of The Year {POTY}
Whether it's officially called that becomes irrelevant as it becomes common language.
There is also no such thing as a "Slam" there are Majors and winning all four in a year is a "Grand Slam" but there's nothing called a Slam, or any other Slam. However, general common reference has effectively made a Major and Slam interchangeable whether you like it or not. I don't and never refer to a Major as a Slam but I wouldn't correct anyone. Calling a single Major a Grand Slam also seems to becoming prevalent, I will correct that.
Language changes and regardless whether you like it or not once it becomes common language it's acceptable generally.
Such is life.

The ATP has named its 'Player of The Year', not the ITF.

But if you personally/unofficially want to call a player the POTY, you should add what you mean: the ATP POTY or the ITF POTY.

The ITF name the Players Champion. This is referred to in tennis as The Player Of The Year. The ATP base theirs on points system. The ITF are much looser and have not structure other than weighting Majors highly as well as Masters and WTF.
Regardless there is a POTY and ITF referee to it as the "Champion" of that year.

The ITF names the ITF World Champion. Have you any evidence that it is referred as the POTY, not as the ITF POTY.

I feel pretty much the same. Added to this is;

- Federer being the clear best player on two surfaces
- Winning the most competitive slam (the AO) while the USO was pretty depleted

Will probably rub some people up the wrong way but nevermind.

Nadal will have a good argument of course based off the rankings and getting the most points in majors - that third slam final is a big deal to me.
Good points! As of now, Nadal #1 ranked player of the year, Federer is THE player of the year. IF Nadal wins the WTF, then perhaps, he could also be player of the year as well. I doubt, however, that Nadal will win the WTF.

Federer is the player of the year. It's not even a debate. Nadal has dominated one surface only (during which Federer didn't even play) Federer has dominated grass and hard courts and he has also dominated Nadal in their match ups who has now become one of Federer's pidgeons. The one major 'hard court' event Nadal did win was basically a clay court it was that slow and Federer wasn't firing on all cylinders because of his back. What's more, Federer has done what he has done at age 36. Nadal is very beatable on any surface other than clay and he will have no chance of winning the ATP year end finals if a fit and in form Federer is taking part. Nadal is the technical No 1 purely because he has played so many matches and has dominated the dirt events.

If Nadal didn't win the Open, Fed as PoY might be a thing even though he only played 4 MS1000 events and skipped RG. As it stands, Nadal (1) won as many or more majors as anybody else this year, and (2) will finish the season atop the ATP rankings. That's always been enough for me - a damn hard combo to justify bypassing, particularly over the last 20-25 years as the tour organized around its current structure.

Roughly speaking, Federer's a part-timer now, and he's brilliant for making that choice.
