Dispelling the Dominic Thiem myth

I don't think so.

I believe he has a higher level on Clay Courts but his very best level on Hard Courts is enough to beat anyone on the surface.

Essentially.

Thiem Top Level on Hard Courts : 80 | Top Field Level on Hard Courts : 80
Thiem Top Level on Clay Courts : 90 | Top Field Level on Clay Courts : 100

Just because he hasnt won French Open because of GOAT doesnt mean hes not a better clay player. He would have 2 french opens and nobody would be saying hes a better hard court player.

Explain his failures to win a single clay masters, while Zverev has two. If he was at least winning those, I would excuse RG, but he cannot even win those when Rafa is not in his way.

The guy has IW title, USO title, final of AO, final of WTF. Right now, hard court IS his best surface. He is still good on clay, but he is better in hard.

It's just another proof that HC do play similar to clay nowadays.

He will win a clay master next year. He has double the amount of chances to do well on HC tournaments. 6 vs 3 and 2 vs 1. His resume at clay masters and slams is clearly better on average and it's not close.

Lol, he won his USO title beating a choking Zverev, who would have destroyed him if that was BO3 like in the clay masters. Hardly a convincing argument.

He took Djokovic to five sets at AO also, beat Nadal there too who had just won USO 2019. Took Nadal to the brink in USO 2018 also. Plus beat Federer for IW title, but couldn't beat Zverev on clay in Madrid....Thiem also beat Federer and Djokovic back to back at last year's WTF the two inddor GOATs.

Thiem is No.3 in the world. He's an excellent tennis player.
He is the third best player in the world.
The most recent slam winner.
He is simultaneously the second best on clay and hard in the world. But he's closer to Djokovic on hard than he is to Nadal on Clay.
Hard: 1) Djokovic 2) Thiem. Clay: 1) Nadal ................. 2) Thiem.
He is better on Clay than he is on hard.
He is an enigma.

He have been arguably the best HC player in the world in 2020, while he was what barely a top 5 Clay courter in 2020. His improvements under Massu on Hard Court have been massive.

He’s become a great player on both clay and hard court. He is much more consistent on both surfaces of late.

And what from that he didn't achieve on clay? He beat all of them a few times on clay. Against Djokovic he is definitely playing better on clay than on hardcourt.

So what if he beat them, did he go home with the trophy on clay? No. It is about not only beating competition, it is about winning titles. He isn't doing that on clay. His biggest title on clay so far is a Barcelona title...let that sink in. Fognini has a masters on clay.

That would be Indian Wells 2019, since then :

Thiem on Hard Courts :

Overall Record : 42-13 (76.3%)
vs Top 50 : 33-10 (76.7%)
vs Top 20 : 18-6 (75.0%)
vs Top 10 : 13-5 (72.2%)
vs Top 5 : 6-1 (85.7%)!
vs Top 1 : 1-0 (100.0%)

Thiem on Clay Courts :

Overall Record : 29-9 (76.3%)
vs Top 50 : 15-6 (71.4%)
vs Top 20 : 7-4 (63.6%)
vs Top 10 : 3-2 (60.0%)
vs Top 5 : 3-2 (60.0%)
vs Top 1 : 1-1 (50.0%)

Essentially what i just wrote above, Thiem very best level on Hard Courts is World #1 right now but that's relative to the entire tour level on this surface.

There's no equivalent to Rafa at Roland Garros in neither Australia nor the US Open so that's why you see Dominic winning the US Open and forcing Novak to a 5th Set in Australia.

G.O.A.T.
If he defeats the king of Australia, we can confirm that claim.
His US Open title cannot be called fluke as it would not only be disrespectful but also incorrect as he defeated Medvedev and Zverev, but the Russian could have won the second and third sets; and not to mention what happened with the German in the final.
Thiem was fortunate so to speak, that his rival there had zero experience in that instance of a Grand Slam tournament.
The Austrian is at the peak of his tennis career and should reaffirm it next season, although he could deliver a coup of authority this week in London.
:D

Still a better claycourter as late as last year: RG F > IW W. Failing both HC slams (one match won total ha) seals it. This year he's done great on HC and nothing on clay but the sample size for clay is small so it may be an aberration.

Unpopular maybe, but -

Dominic Thiem is a better HC player than a clay court player.
Definitely a better slow-medium low bouncing HC player than clay. His BH is lethal if the ball is not getting shoulder high. On clay his BH is a huge weakness if ball rears up on him which it does against Nadal on clay. Means he ends up going way behind baseline.
