i think this is the most crucial final he is going to play and he will be under the pump mentally.........wimbledon 2019 kind of kept him in the slam race really.........he is currently at 17 slams with a 3 slam gap with the other two.........i feel it is a huge gap to cover with the new gen finally catching up.........he used to win australian opens with ease but now look what it is taking to win just one aus open.........he will be 34 very soon and the new gen big-4 are finally priming.........so i see that his fans should be very nervous about the final regardless of who he plays and hoping that he collects his 18th slam........even 2 slams is a big gap to cover with increasing age.........

It is over anyway. He may end on 19 as.he is fav at Wimbledon. But Nadal is winning FO for sure as Djokovic is now no problem for Nadal on clay and Thiem has gone backwards since his USO and Sinner not yet ready. That USO 2020 will be the event that Djokovic rues for life.
If he loses on Sunday i think he will drop down the rankings quickly.

Their bodies are already breaking down.

Neither Rafa nor Nole have Fed's effortless game to win easy points off serve, etc

They need total physical engagement to succeed.

OP is absolutely right: Nole needs this AO, then next Wimbledon to stay in the race.

USO is much more uncertain.

The race is already over, as I fully expect Nadal to win at least another three RG titles at the minimum. Djokovic IMO should just play to win, probably will help him. He needed Nadal to weaken at RG, which clearly hasn't happened, if anything the gap is even bigger between Nadal and the others on clay.

Novak looks unbeatable right now. Serve is better than ever. On this fast AO - he could keep winning many more years.
Not to mention Wimbledon as well. That would be even easier than AO.
I think the slam race is over - in that Novak will surpass Nadal and Federer. He will likely get to 20 this year itself.
Watching his match today - I was mesmerized by how well he is playing. He won't drop a set in the final vs Med/Titspas.

Are you guys watching the same sport? If he plays another 3 years he could easily get to 22 maybe 25. The young players haven’t looked that strong mentally except maybe medvedev.

You have a point, but he gets older as they get better and better.

And it's not like they hadn't beaten him already before.

Not sure where that hope about Nadal is coming from. Since 2018 he benefit so much from easy draw at the start of RG. Couple of hard matches in a row and he wont have enough energy to beat top guys. Im sure hes not winning RG this year, and he might win it once more before he ends his carrer.

Yes because Nadal will be on 21 after rg and the next gen are finally stepping up everywhere except Wimby and even then someone is due to step up and it will be Noles first loss in a AO FINAL so like a "changing of the guard".

He'll probably win though so lets see.

A couple of hard matches in a row? And who exactly is going to give him a couple of hard matches in a row? Granted he will get one here and or there, but with the two week format, he will be fine.

Every great champ eventually loses a big finale to a newbie...

Changing of the guard it's called not for nothing.

Thats why i say hes been very lucky with his draw. Basically he gets bye into qf, and winning 3 matches on his favorite court and surface during 5 days wasnt a problem before.

Yeah, Nadal's draws to start RG. Tell me, Nadal beat World No.1 Novak Djokovic with a bagel in the final, what would you consider a tough draw? He could draw Djokovic R1 and he'd lose 7 games...

It could, but it also could not. No use predicting the Big 3 anymore. I also don't think he's losing the final. He's like a 70% favourite against either guy maybe more IMO so the thread, while hopeful from the perspective of anybody who's not a Djokovic fan, doesn't make much sense.

winning the 9th title on sunday will certainly keep him in the hunt for slam-race while losing won't help matters and makes it almost unachievable at this stage in his career with him pushing 34, 35........it is that simple........

Cautiously optimistic. I think Djokovic is the favorite but he's by no means a lock.
if it's meddy, the match will follow a steady pattern and eventually the outcome could be in favour of novak........i think it will be more fun to non-djoko fans if tsitsipas reaches the final, contrary to what most people believe.........either way novak should be the firm favourite like you said........

Basically Djokovic needs a multi-slam season this year and AO helps a lot in that, gives him confidence and gives him extra 2 shots at Wimbledon/USO. Apart from 2018, the AO has been his biggest stronghold to have a multi-slam season but if he loses then it might "dent" his confidence a bit and end up winning just 1 slam putting him to #18 but by that time it depends on what Nadal and Fed have done.

He wins the final easy if Tsitsipas or Med goes 5 sets in semis. if its 3 sets for those 2, then maybe the final will go 4 or 5 sets. Djokovic can beat players with a weak shoulder, ab tear, foot issue. He makes no sense to me sometimes, as in it should not happen or exist.

Really? Have we learned nothing? He is the most consistent player in the tour today, and the favorite at 3 of the 4 slams. He will remain a contender for years. He has plenty of opportunities to win more even if he loses on Sunday.

I mean, his slam race could come to an end even if he wins. I don't think these kinds of thoughts will enter his mind. He'll just keep giving himself chances, just like Rafa, Fed, and Serena.

what is the general feeling among djokovic fans? are they as confident this time as they are usually in aus open finals........
Not as confident as say pre-2016, but more optimistic than 2019. It'll be a tough match, but it looks like he could do it. Obviously it won't be easy, but I'm hoping.

As for the rest of the slam race, I suppose we'll see. Djokovic always has a chance at AO, Wim, and USO. If he can win 2/3 (or better yet 3/3), he keeps his chances alive.

^ A dude up there was mesmerized by Djokovic beating a qualifier in 3 sets. This forum never fails to deliver...

I feel Wimbledon-us open combo is more likely if he tanks more of the clay season.

It possibly is over anyway, even winning here he still has to win 3 to surpass Nadal/Federer and Nadal ain't going anywhere while he's still a big favourite for the French and he has someone chasing his slam count down

Novak needs 1 more magical 2011 or 2015 slam season. If got 1 more 3 slam year I think he’d do it then. It’s gonna be very tough to do but he’s capable of it. Still 2 slams is more realistic and his ceiling.

Odds are against a 3 slam year against. but that would be the juggernaut to propel past fed and especially Rafa even if Rafa got the french. It would be 20-20-21 then. He’d level fed and be 1 behind Rafa.

He’s never been able to within 1 of Rafa and this probably the only way he can.

The other alternative is he gets say 2 and Rafa or fed don’t win one this year. That unlikely though with Rafa because of the french but another good outcome for djoko. Each year he’s actually getting closer to fed so has good chances to catch him. As he’s now unlikely to add but can never rule to great fed out at Wimbledon though. Rafa is the problem because he keeps adding himself and the last 2 years he hasn’t been able to close the gap on him as they won 2 each in 2019 and 1 each in 2020. Djoko needs a year where he once again makes a significant inrode.

To be fair, he should win Wimbledon 2021, 2022 and 2023 if healthy. To go with 2021 AO that’s 21 slams. I think he will win another AO and USO too, so that’s 23 slams.
23 slams to go with his 400+!weeks at number 1, 8 YE#1, double golden masters, NCYGS etc will put him as undisputed GOAT, no matter how many RG Nadal wins.

You omitted to mention 2028 W and AO. He's got those two, in the bag. And USO 2031-33.

In fact, AO organizers are considering cancelling everything until 2038, and just awarding the trophies to Novak via mail. Much simpler that way, plus it saves everyone time and energy.

Okay that made me laugh

In all seriousness, anyone who thinks Djokovic isn’t Wimbledon favourite for at least 3 more years is just in denial about the BOAT taking all the records.
AO is closer because nextgen is good on HC, but my money is on the guy with a 100% SF/F record there

Yeah, I'd agree that Djokovic (right now) is a massive, not just a slight, favorite in 2021 WC, but that's as far as I'd go with that. Things change and it's silly to predict too far out when a player is coming up on his 34th birthday.
